Known for her tremendousin tellect and great beauty,Ca therine was also a giftedspeaker, a talent she used forthe glo ry of God, convincingma ny to follow a life in Christ.She was be head ed and tortur -ed. So in spiring was St. Cathe -rine the Great Martyr that oneof the oldest and most famousOrtho dox mon ast eries locatedin Egypt is na med after her. St.Ca the rine, or Kate ryna in Uk -rain ian, is much re vered inUk raine. Ka te ryna re mains apo pular na me among the Uk -rain ian Or tho dox.The Feast Day of St. Barba -ra is commemorated on Dec -ember 17. Her Feast Day ismuch-beloved and celebratedin Ukraine today. St. Barbara’sremains were brought to Kyivin the 12th C and, today, rest atSt. Volodymyr’s Ca thedral inKy iv. St. Barbara is uniqueamong the martyr-saints.When she was still a teenagergrowing up in the Syrian cityof Heliopolis, she showedgreat er wisdom than the contemporaryintellectuals. TheHoly Spirit guided her to a lifein Christ and she was laterbap tized. She had such an ard -ent love for the Lord, eventuallygiving her life for herfaith. In this she serves as anexample of how the Holy Spi -rit may lead us to a life inChrist if we are as committedas St. Barbara. She became amartyr be ing beheaded by herown fa ther.The Apostlesn The Feast Day of St. An drewis commemorated on Dec em -ber 13 (See p.1). According toThe Chronicles, St. Andrew hadreached the hills of moderndayKyiv and proclaimed thatgreat Churches would be builthere. St. Andrew is the patronsaint of Ukraine and of theEcu men ical Patriarchate ofCon stan tin ople.The Saintsn The Feast Day of St. Ni cho -las the Wonder worker is mark -ed on December 19 (See p. 21).St. Nicholas, or Myko lay inUkrainian was born in the ci tyof Patara. His parents we re pi -ous and dedicated their son toGod. Growing up, St. Ni cholasattended daily services faithfullyand studied the Holywrit ings. He became a priestand began giving religious in -struction, and later became bi -shop. He was known for hiscompassion, generosity andcha ritable works. He is knownas "the Wonderworker" for themany miracles attributed tohis intercession. St. Nicholaslived to old age in the city ofMyra. His remains were transferredto Bari, Italy where theynow rest. He is the patronsaint of sailors and travelers.These are just some of thefeast days commemorated inDecember, important in theUk rainian Orthodox Church.Many others are rememberedin December, in clud ing manyUkrain ian saints such as Allthe Saints of Crimea and venerablesaints of the KyivanMon ast ery of the Caves. As weturn our thoughts towards theLord during this period of theNa tivity Fast, St. Anna’s constantprayer and the VirginMary’s lifetime of disciplinedspiritual work remind us ofthe patience, diligence and hu -mility needed for our salvationand for the Lord’s bountifulgifts. At the same time, weare also reminded this monthto cultivate strong faith throughthe examples of the youngmartyrs of St. Cathe rine andSt. Bar bara, who placed theirunwavering love for God be -fore their own lives. They willinglysought salvation and alife in the Lord ra ther than fallprey to their own beauty, priviligedlife and wealth. As Uk -rainian Ortho dox, we are particularlyconnected to St. An -drew who re minds us of thedeep roots of Orthodoxy in Uk -raine, which we have brought toCa n ada. The daycontinued with lunch and various re -ports. After the Board activities for2011-2012 were ratified, Chancellor ofthe UOCC, Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter Fr.Vic tor Lakusta presented informationfrom the Consis tory.The delegates enjoyed a delicioussupper and later heard further reportsfrom St. Andrew’s College, St. John’sInstitute, and the three youth camps:Kiev’s Ki-Hi, Bar-V-Nok and Kolo may -ka. The evening concluded with anopen discussion on Eparchial is sues.Saturday, Oct. 27 began with anopen ing prayer. Fr. Deacon Anton La -kus ta presented a very enlightening ses -sion on The Deaconate and its Role in theOrthodox Church. This was followed bya presentation from youth participants,Mackenzie Reed and Joce lyn Popowich,on the Orphanage Trip to Ukraine thattook place in July and August (See p.23).After a coffee break, Fr. Ro man Bozykpresented an educational session on thetopic of The Apo ca lypse.More eparchial business was conductedwith the election of the West ernEparchy Council for 2012-2013. Re so -lutions were presented, discussed, andvoted on. There was also a vote on thebudget for 2012-2013. The sessioncon cluded with closing remarks fromHis Grace Bishop Ilarion, a lunch andsome free time for delegates.The Assembly reconvened in theevening starting with Great Vespers ce -lebrated by Very Rev. Archpriest Fr. Ta -ras Krochak. A Youth Appreciation Ban -quet and Acolyte Recognition followedthis service. The Assembly culminatedwith a magnificent celebration of theHierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday,Oct. 28 led by His Emi nen ce Metro pol -itan Yurij, His Grace Bi shop Ilarion,together with 12 priests and four deacons.A lunch sponsored by the Ca -thedral of St. John’s Choir con cludedthe events of this year’s As sembly.The Western Eparchy Assembly of2012 was successful, combining faith,business, and friendship. We look forwardto another year of spiritualgrowth, an expansion of projects andeducational sessions in an atmosphereof optimism and hope, under the guid -ance and leadership of His Grace Bi -shop Ilarion.Delegates enjoyed a delicious banquet.Eastern Eparchy Parish Workshopn HAMILTON, ON—On Saturday Oct. 20, 2012 the Eastern Eparchy Parish Re -vitalization Workshop was held, led by Joseph Kormos, Parish DevelopmentMin istry, OCA Midwest Diocese, as Facilitator who has assisted many Orthodoxpar ishes in their own process of renewal and growth. This workshop was organizedby a committee of the Eastern Eparchy Rada, proceeding from a resolutionof the 2011 East ern Eparchy Assembly mandating that a workshop on par ishgrowth be held. This workshop was very well attended with 52 people representingat least 12 parishes. This was encouraging as it exceeded the usual number ofpeople at East ern Epar chy Assemblies. Joseph was an outstanding presenter witha very en ga g ing style and his presentation was solidly based in Orthodox The o -logy, Patris tics, Ca nons and Holy Scrip tures. He took early retirement from hisbusiness 7 years ago and has conducted his own research on thriving parishes todetermine best practises, comparing it to existing research, articles and models.From this he de ve loped a model of par ish assessment based on 8 aspects or di -mensions of parish functioning.These dimensions or characteristics include: 1) Gospel Centered Vision, 2)Vi brant Worship, 3) Shared Leader ship, 4) Open Communication, 5) Au thenticCommunity, 6) Christian For m a tion, 7) Active Service and 8) Spread ing the Go -spel. Joseph explained each of these areas and how they relate to vi brant parishlife. He then asked everyone to informally rate their own parish. All results werethen pool ed, identifying the weakest areas that our parishes, in general, need todevelop. We then divided into groups, each studying one of these dimensions andpracticed identifying goals and anticipating obstacles that might arise. Fin ally,each group reported their ideas to all in attendance which the organizing com -mit tee has since collated. A more de tailed report will be presented at the upcomingEast ern Eparchy Assembly.According to the Facilitator, the par ish dimensions we had voted as strong orweak were similar to other workshops that he has led. However, this was the firsteverworkshop that com bined members from multiple par ishes as he usually workswith individual parishes. Many, if not all, participants agreed that the next step isfor parishes to have in dividual follow-up workshops to en ga ge their own membersin this pro cess. While some individuals had ex pressed doubts about the effectivenessof an OCA facilitator from the USA, the model presented, combined with ourgroup work, made it clearly evi dent that this is not only relevant and useful as it hasdemystified the pro cess of parish revitalization. It al lowed us to bypass discussingwhat we should do instead of identifying a few "key" ac tions and doing them.Afterwards at Vespers, Rt. Rev. Mi tr ed Achpriest Fr. Wasyl Makarenko ad -dress ed us with some very encouraging words, "We have gleaned much to day thatis beneficial, we have heard ma ny important ideas" and closed with Taras Shev -chen ko’s "Learn from others but to yourself be true!" Several parishes are in theprocess of organizing similar work shops. Many participants left feeling energized,encouraged and optimistic that there is a way that we can re vitalize ourparishes in the Eastern Eparchy! The Holy Sy -nod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church called a specialme eting on Nov. 6 in the wake of his repose to plan thefuneral. A Nov. 10 meeting of the Synod selected an interimleader until a new patriarch is elected. Metro politan ofVarna Kiril becomes interim lead er of the Synod, and headof the Eparchy of Sophia.The funeral for reposed Patriarch Maksim took placeon Nov. 9, 2012 at the St. Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral inSofia. This day was also declared a national day of mourningfor all Bulgaria. His All-Holiness Ecumenical PatriarchBar tholomew led the Funeral Rite together with Pa triarchIrinej of Serbia, Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and AllGreece, as well as Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and AllAlbania. Some of thesewere elaborated in Part One in theNov ember issue of Visnyk/The Herald."Before confession we must pause tore view our life and our unbecoming ac -tions, words and thoughts," writes Me -tropolitan Ilarion. A key part of pre -parations involves examining our consciencefollowing the Ten Com mand -ments. The Dobriy Pastyr/Good Shep -herd prayerbook, starting on p.195,pro vides a detailed list of the questionsfor examining the conscience. It is vitalFr. Volodymyr Makarenko has read theprayer of absolution and gives a blessing.The Sacramentsthat we recognize that we have sinnedagainst the Lord. Another part of thispreparation involves fasting. " This fastis to glorify our Lord," MetropolitanIla rion explains the purpose of such asfast in his book. One fasts for a shorttime before Con fession as well as in theinterim after Confession and beforeHoly Com m union. This is particularlyimportant if one has participated inHo ly Confes sion the day before theDiv ine Liturgy. This fasting rule ismodified for small children and thosewith conditions such as diabetes, whoshould eat modestly and restrict foodto what is ne ed ed. Fasting is not justabout food. It also refers to our behavioursand thoughts. We must also ab -stain from such distractions as entertainmentsin order to maximally turnour attention towards the Lord. Prayerforms another essential part of thesepreparations. Our prayer book alsopro vides a set of prayers to read beforeHoly Confession as well as daily pray -ers of repentance.Having fasted, prayed, and acknowledgedour sin, we are now ready to part-take in the Rite of Confession. Me tro -politan Petro Mohyla, who played alead ing role in the 1600’s in systematizingUkrainian liturgical service books,sums up the preparations: "He who wi -shes to confess, that is, sincerely repentfor his transgressions, first of all, prepareshim self thoroughly by ca re fulintrospection of his conscience, recallingall misdeeds committed againstGod and his fellowman. He is emotionallyimpassioned and suffers contritionfor his sins and misdeeds, havingviolated the Lord’s Command -ments, thus meriting God’s wrathupon himself and forfeiture of HisBles s ing. How did it originate? What role does a priest play? Is there a specialprocedure for confession? The Scriptures hold answers to these questions.Concerning our sins, God’s Word gives a marvelous promise: "If we confessour sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse usfrom all unrighteousness" (1:9). The faithful are to bring their sins to God inrepentance and receive cleansing and forgiveness.The early Christian community had a specific practice in this regard. Peo -ple would stand and confess their sins to God in the presence of the wholecongregation! Had not Jesus encouraged His followers to walk in the lighttogether, to confront problems corporately, to "tell it to the church" (Mt18:17)? Thus, James writes, "Confess your trespasses to one another" (Jam5:16). But as time went on and the Church grew in numbers, strangers cameto visit and public confession became more difficult. Out of mercy, priestsbegan to witness confessions of sin privately on behalf of the Church.Jesus gave His Disciples the authority to forgive sin. "If you forgive thesins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they areretained (Jn 20:23; see also Mt 16:19). From the beginning, Christians un -der stood that the grace of ordination endowed the shepherd of the flockwith the discernment and compassion to speak the words of remission onbehalf of Christ regarding the sins of those who confess and turn from sin.For God has promised to remove sin from us "as far as the east is from thewest" (Ps 102:12)."You did not choose Me," Jesus told the Twelve, "but I chose you and ap -pointed [ordained] you" (Jn 15:16). To these same disciples, He promised,"It is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit" (Mk 13:11). Whom God calls,He equips. Paul writes to Timothy, "Stir up the gift of God which is in youthrough the laying on of my hands" (2 Ti 1:6). It is the grace of the Holy Spi -rit that enables the priest to serve God and the people.Thus, the Church has encouraged her faithful: If you know you have committeeda specific sin, do not hide it but confess it before coming to the HolyEucharist. St. Paul wrote, "Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat ofthe bread and drink of the cup" (1 Co 11:28), and "If we would judge ourselves,we would not be judged" (1 Co 11:31).King David learned a lesson regarding his sin that is recorded for ourbenefit. For about a year, he had hidden his sins of adultery with Bathshebaand the murder of her husband (2 Kg 11:1-12:13). Then, confronted by Na -than the prophet, David repented from his heart and confessed his sin in apsalm that is used for general confession to this day (Ps 50). The joy of salvationwas restored to him.People ask, "Can I confess to God privately?" certainly, though there isno clear biblical basis for it. Even general confession occurs in the Church.In His mercy, God provides the Sacrament of Confession—more properlycalled the Sacrament of Repentance—to give us deliverance from sin andfrom what psychologists call denial. It is easy to pray in isolation yet nevercome clean. It is far more effective to confess aloud to God before a priestand benefit from his guidance and help.Thus, we come before the holy icon of Christ, to whom we confess,and are guided by our spiritual father in a cleansing inventory of our lives.When we tell God all, naming our sins and failures, we hear those gloriouswords of freedom that announce Christ’s promise of forgiveness of all oursins. The new edition ofthe prayer book of the Ukrainian Ortho -dox Church of Canada, Dobriy Pastyr-The Good Shepherd, is on its way to theprinters and will be available to the faith -ful in the New Year. This long-await edprayer book contains all the prayers necessaryfor private and communal prayerpractices for the Ukrain ian OrthodoxChristian, including mor ning and eve n -ing prayers, basic teachings of the Ortho -dox Church, the Divine Liturgy, servicesfor well-being and me morials amongma ny others. One can make great stepsto wards their salvation by diligentlypray ing with this prayer book.What goes into making a prayer bo -ok? Why does it take so long? To an swerthese and other questions, the Vis nyk/The Herald sat down with Very Re v -erend Archpriest Fr. Gregory Miel nik tolook behind the scenes at the ma king ofa prayer book. Fr. Gregory, who is Deanof the Holy Trinity Metropo litan Ca the -dral in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is FirstVice-Chair of the Liturgical Com mis -sion of the Ukrainian Orthodox Churchof Canada. Fr. Gregory is a long-timemember of the Commission, which ischarged with the development and productionof liturgical books for theUOCC. Drawing on Fr. Gregory’s vastex perience as the Chair of this Com mis -sion for 10 years when this project wasin itiated back in 2000, the Visnyk/TheHerald takes readers inside the produc -tion process, exploring the prayer bo oks ofthe past, the nuts and bolts of productionas well as the potential for the futu re.Visnyk/The Herald: Слава Ісусу Хри -с ту! Glory to Jesus Christ! Fr. Gre gory,we thank you for taking this time totell us about the new prayer book so onto be printed. Can you describe forour readers how does our Ukrain ianOr thodox Church of Canada go aboutmaking a prayer book?Fr. Gregory: Back in 2000 the requestof the bishops at that time was to bringthe Ukrainian language as close as possibleto the Ukrainian used in Ukrainepresently. At that time, the LiturgicalCommission was granted the status ofa Standing Commission of the Consis -tory. It was no longer just a single project,but became a Standing Commis -sion for the Consistory dealing with allliturgical issues. The first project weun dertook was to examine all prayerbo oks that have been printed in Uk -rain ian since 1920 to get an idea ofcon tent. After reviewing many of theprayer books that were printed, we no -ticed the one great discrepancy be -tween them—the translations varied.We concluded that we had to look atthe original sources—Slavonic andGre ek. Then, the next question concernedthe content of the up-comingprayer book that was to be all-inclusive—for ecclesiastical use and also personaluse. Of all the prayer books print edsince 1920, the UOCC’s Dobriy Pastyrin terms of content was the better version.So, we expanded on that and ad -ded some parts to our first Do briy Pas -tyr prayer book. Once we agre ed onthe se changes, the first draft was preparedand we started going through theprayer book, editing it, correcting it andhaving it printed. The second pray erbook is the one that we had be en workingon until now. The corrections of thisnew Dobriy Pastyr have been completed,and we have al ready reviewed andsubmitted it for Epis cop al blessing.Visnyk/The Herald: What are the stepsin the preparation process?Fr. Gregory: We were gathering materialsand seeing what has been done al -ready. Once we noticed the great divergencebetween the translations, we hadto decide on the principles of how wewanted to translate it. The English trans -lation was another issue, and we feltthat our English translations would re -flect the Ukrainian. From there, we hadto make decisions about substitutetranslations for the Old Testament.What is our traditional Orthodox substituteof the translation of the OldTes t ament? Whatever translations wehad, particularly with the Tropars, theyhad to fit both melodies—Halytska andKyivska. We are convinced that we cansing it in both. The Dobriy Pastyr is puttogether with time and care because itis the foundational text on which wewill be basing of future publications.Visnyk/The Herald: So you are not start -ing from scratch...Fr. Gregory: We are refining it. We areal so looking for translations that areout there already. Others are using the -se translations for their Church andthe ir tradition.Visnyk/The Herald: What does this meanfor the translations? What considerationsgo into this decision-makingpro cess?Fr. Gregory: One thing we have to re a -lize is that there are two traditions inOr thodoxy that we have to take intoac count. There is a Byzantine traditionand there is a Slavic tradition. They differsomewhat in terms of style andstruc ture. For example, in some of ourservices, our Slavic tradition has theMo le ben’, they do not have the Mole -ben’ at all. Also, we have our own uni -que Uk rainian tradition centred on theKyivan tradition. We respect both traditionshe re in the new prayer book.Visnyk/The Herald: Do you anticipateany difficulty in these translations be -ing accepted?Fr. Gregory: We have to get used to thenew words. Any new translation takestime to get into the life of the Church.We can appreciate what the faithful aregoing though because we are not usedto it ourselves. There is going to be age neration or two and then this willbe come the norm for them. Right now,you can call this the "interim period"where we are going from one translationto a new translation.Visnyk/The Herald: What were someof the goals for this edition of theprayer book?Fr. Gregory: When the Dobriy Pastyrca me out in the 1950s, it was a book forall needs that took us up to now whenthe new one came out. It was our in -tent with the new Dobriy Pastyr to ex -pand it a little bit for our faithful andcarry on this same spirit. For example,we were trying to bring back the oldtra dition in preparation for HolyCom munion because we tend to feelnow that frequent Communion is ex -pected from our faithful, but there hasnever been guidance. We basically providedthe opportunity in this editionso it is there for the faithful. The morningprayers also are extensive. So meonestarting out may be over whelm ed, butprayer is a growth pro cess. You start offsmall and take in what you can so thatyou can grow. You have the full textthe re and it is up to you to slowly growinto it.Visnyk/The Herald: Are there any partsthat have been added or subtracted inthis new edition?Fr. Gregory: There was a Litany for theCa techumens which was not includedin our old translations. Our argumentfor including it was that we may haveCatechumens in our churches. We havealso included more detail on the role ofthe deacon during the service of the Li -turgy. In our old translation we hadvery minimal rubrics for the deaconthere. In the future, we may have fulltimedeacons in our church who donot seek ordination into the priesthoodand want to remain as deacons.Visnyk/The Herald: What about thelogistics of getting the LiturgicalCommission together?Fr. Gregory: The preparation of the Do -briy Pastyr was done on a volunteer ba -sis. Because of the distance of the cler gyand because we all had parish assignments,we tried to get together at leasttwice or three times a year in Winnipeg.This meant flying all the members intoWinnipeg and we usually sat about 3-4days. On the present Li turgical Com mis -sion we have Fr. Cor nell Zu britsky asChair. The chair has to be a member ofthe Consistory Board. I am the First Vi ceChair, and there is also Fr. Gene Ma -ximiuk, Fr. Ta ras Kro chak, Fr. Boh danHla dio, Fr. Dr. Oleg Krawchenko and Bi -shop An driy was as signed as the Epi scop -al representative to oversee the pro ject.Visnyk/The Herald: What impact doesmodern technology have on producinga prayer book today?Fr. Gregory: At this last session with theCommission, I think we used moderntechnology to its fullest. We all hadtexts of the Dobriy Pastyr emailed outto us. Our meetings consisted of Skypemeetings for two to three hours sometimes.We would block off a certainnum ber of pages for discussion and eachmember had an opportunity to prepare.That saved a lot of costs in gettingtogether. With Skype, it was like youwere practically in the same room.Visnyk/The Herald: From the perspectiveof the faithful, are all prayer booksnot the same? Why can we not just usethe old one?Fr. Gregory: The language of our oldDobriy Pastyr was very archaic with avery strong archaic Galician Ukrain -ian. It is one of those cases where youget used to the translation. Anotherpro blem encountered on the Com mis -sion was each of the members had the -ir own preferences. We appreciatewhen the faithful say they are not usedto these new translations. It is the same9with the Commission—we are notused to the same translations we agre -ed upon. What the new prayer bookhas now is that the Ukrainian and Engl -ish translations coincide. We are notborrowing a translation.Visnyk/The Herald: Does the Liturgic -al Commission have any more liturgicalbooks coming out?Fr. Gregory: As soon as we receive theblessing for Dobriy Pastyr to go to press,we will come out immediately afterthat with Vira/Faith, which is re placingour old Vira/Faith. It has be en expanded,but is more or less the same pocketsize. We are presently reviewing the ru -brics and the Slu zheb nyk/Service Bookfor the clergy.Visnyk/The Herald: The parishes havea need for specialized liturgical books.Are there any plans, for example, forthe Great Fast or Paschal services?Fr. Gregory: We have manuscriptsready for another two—on the Sacra -ments of Baptism and Marriage. Theseare being reviewed by the Commissionnow. One of the reasons for these Sa -craments is to have uniformity. Thatwill complete the trinity of books thatwe started. One of the projects that theCommission will be proposing in thefuture to the Council of Bishops is thepreparation of Paschal services—actuallythe Passion Week and the Paschalcycle of services.Visnyk/The Herald: Fr. Gregory, as aconcluding message for our readers,can you summarize for us the essenceof the work of the Liturgical Com mis -sion?Fr. Gregory: Slowly we will bring someuniformity to our traditions, but we alsorespect that there are local traditions.The intent is to have uniformity. Thiswas also the intent of Metropol itan Ila -rion of Blessed Memory when he producedearlier liturgical books. Майже усі нації, щопроживають у нашому місті, пред -ста вляють свою культуру в різнихжанрах у своїх власних павільйо -нах. Серед них і наша українська на -ція, до павільйону якої завжди сто -ять довжелезні черги відвідува чів.Вже з перших кроків в українсь ко -му київ ському павільйоні відчу ва -ється на сичений національний ко -лорит ук ра їнської культури. Чу до вівиставки українських мистців зав -жди тепло вітають гостей при входідо паві ль йону.Цьогорічна виставка під керів -ниц твом іконописця Віри Лаза ро -вич-Сеньчук та комітету виставкиікон, при свячена живій традиції пе -ре дан ня іконописання. Центра льнемісце на виставці займають іконичу дотворної Божої Матері, назвияких залежать від території, де ста -лося чудо з іконою. Обличчя Бого -родиці світле й незворушне, а на ру -ках вона тримає Младенця Ісуса,Який має в руці згорток із БожимПо сланням служити людям. Поособливомувиглядають і весільнііко ни Божої Матері, створені в яс -кравих тонах, де переважає позо ло -та. Пані Віра з особливою мате рин -ською любов'ю й благосло вен нямтво рить весільні ікони для сво їх си -нів на день вінчання в Церкві. Ду -маю, це найкращий подарунок ді -тям і їх нащадкам як благо сло венняна життя під Божим Покро вом.На столі розкладені зразки ро бо -ти над іконою, фарби, що нано ся -ться на неї неодноразово. Не вселегко дається іконописцям у своїхтрудах. "Завдання для іконописця—сер йоз не. Традиція передається че -рез мо литву і це дає кожному змогуста ратися передавати слово Божеба зуючись на знання старовиннихобразів і теології,—розповідає паніВіра. Згідно традиції, щоб писатиікону чи ікони для Церковних по -треб, бажаючий найперше проситьблагословення Первоієрарха своєїЦеркви. Ікона не підписується ав -тором і не передає особистих емо -цій іконографа. Саме цим відріз ня -ються ікони від художніх картин збіблійними образами та епізодами".І дійсно, якщо придивитись, томожна побачити різницю між су во -рими, чітко визначеними форма миіко ни і довільних в художньомуофор мленні картин з біблійно-іс то -ричними епізодами. Крім авто р сь -ких ікон В. Сеньчук було чимало ро -біт її студентів, ікони з авторсь кихколекцій, з Українського центру ку -льтури й освіти, з музею Св. Во ло -ди мира, з архіву Консис то рії Пра -во славної Церкви в Канаді, як та -кож роботи мистців-іконописцівсві тової слави як наприклад Миро -нa Ле вицького, Оме ляна Мазу риката Романа Коваля.Виставка представляє й інші ро -боти з образом Божої Матері йМладенця Ісуса Христа, що ство ре -ні на дереві, кераміці, на монетах,ку лонах, різдвяних сувенірах, на ви -шивках. Почесне місце займаютьстародавні автентичні ікони XVIIIстоліття з приватних колекцій. Де -які з них покриті зверху метале ви -ми ризами, що надають іконі сер -йоз ного і навіть суворого вигляду. Зпошаною вдивляєшся в старе РеймськеЄвангеліє Анни Яро сла вівни(XI ст.) і в пошарпаний часом та ви -користанням Молитовник 1897 ро -ку. На виставку завітала й іконаПре ображення, яка переда є ться поукраїнсько-католицьких Цер квахпід час з'їзду молоді.Серед цих чудових експонатівзнаходжу й ікону Канадської БожоїМатері, що була написана Вірою Се -ньчук на святкування 75-річчя за -снування Укра їнської ПравославноїЦеркви в Канаді. Копія цієї ікони бу -ла подарована колишньому Пре -зидентові України В. Ющенку в 2008році під час його візиту до Ка нади."В загальному Віра написала бли -зь ко 900 ікон",—повідомляє вірнийпо мічник Віри, її чоловік Володи -мир Сеньчук. Періодично пані Вірачи тає лекції з аспектів іконографії, атакож навчає учнів приватно у сво -їй майстерні."Головне завдання іконописця—шукати передання в іконах Незем -ного Світла Божого, Його надзви -чай ність,"—з особливим захоплен -ням розповідає пані Віра.—"Томудля написання ікони кожний іконо -писець старається тримати духовноврівноважений стан і підтримуєцей стан поглиблюючи знання з те -о ло гії". Мабуть, саме тому ця щира ізавжди усміхнена жінка така при -вітна до усіх. Хіба не так заповідаєнам Господь? "Любіть Бога і ближ -нього свого!" Пані Віра захопленаук раїнською культурою, піснями,традиціями, чим щиро завдячуєсвоїй мамі пані Марії Лазарович зацей живий дар. Відвідувачі вис тав -ки також мали змогу побачити зра -з ки ткацтва Марії Лазарович. Роз -по відаючи про відповідь на своє по -кликання, пані Віра не могла не зга -дати своїх учителів Д. Барто шу ка і В.Андре є ва та праці відо мого іко нопис ця С. Гор дин сь кого, які по-особливомувплинули і додали їй ба жан -ня віт ворювати свя ті образи.Мета виставки—ознайомити ши -ро кий загал громади з Богом об да -рованими іконописцями як ВіраЛа зарович Сеньчук і всіма іншими,чиї роботи були представлені на ви -с тавці. У розмові про підготовкуви ставки разом з комітетом пані Ві -ра висловила щиру подяку усім лю -дям, що допомагали їй, а особливодоктору Роману Єринюку, ВіталіюЯцевичу, Маркіяну Єринюку, Лео -нарду Кравчуку та Анастасії Сич-Єринюк. Завдяки цій дружній про -фесійній команді виставка булапре красно організована.Приємно, що наша українська гро -мада має багато талантів, які го -то ві потішити глядачів такимичу до вими виставками. It is an art and religiouscultural theme that permeates themore than 120 years of history of Uk -rainian settlement in Canada. Icons andchurch architecture were popularizedfrom the earliest days of the settlementof Ukrainians in Canada. Hundreds ofchurches were built on the CanadianPrairies and later in towns and cities.Today, a major architectural feature onthe prairies is the traditional Ukrainianchurch landscape with its strong interioriconographic tradition. Four majorwaves of immigrants brought to Can -ada, cultivated and popularized the richtradition of writing icons. There wereboth iconographers—those with thetraining and theological mentorship towrite icons for the interior of churches,as well as painters with artistic backgroundswhose works was inspired byicons. Icons have an important and dy -namic placement within Ukrainian Or -thodox Church buildings with the pray -erful use of icons on the iconostasis,walls, ceiling, windows, and front en -trance. Icons are also found in many Uk -rainian Orthodox homes in icon cor -ners—usually located in an eastern wallof the home in the living room or diningroom, as well as most other rooms.This year’s exhibit was set up with 8se parate, yet interconnected areas forpre senting the many icons being displayedas well as an area for demonstratingthe tradition of writing icons.Visitors to the pavilion were struck byits resemblance to a curated gallery ormuseum. This wonderfully professionaldisplay was the work of the committeechaired by Vera Lazarowich-Senchuk.She was charged with overall projectma nagement and integrated all theparts. The designers were Vitaliy Ya tse -vych, who brings his skills from theWin nipeg Art Gallery, and Mar kian Ye -re niuk, an architect-de sign er. As well,committee member Leo nard Krawchukwith his team of Linda La za rowich andCarol Martindale used their museumex pertise for the arrangement of the in -teriors of the display cases. The blackdraping and spotlights highlighted displayareas which were assembled to providefor the flow of mo vement throughoutthe room. Trad i tional embroideriesand weavings were displayed adorningthe icons in both traditional and contemporaryfashion.The exhibited icons were groupedthematically. For example, there werewedding icons, icons of the Theotokos,and samples of various iconographyschools and styles as well as a prayercorner. Unique to this exhibit was aspace set up for de monstrating the writingof an icon. Stu dents from the studioof master ico no grapher Vera LazarowichSenchuk work ed on icons to illustratethe many stages of the icon-writing pro -cess. Vi sitors were able to glimpse intothis port able studio to see the writingtechniques and how the pigments andother materials were being used. The ty -pical traditional icon is a portablepainting on a wooden panel executed inegg tempera medium. It is also made ofnatural materials: wooden panels, linen,gold-leaf and paint made of natural pigments—earthsand minerals—mixed inegg-yolk, all of which have symbolicmeaning. An authentic icon is not basedon the imagination of the painter buton the Word of God, Holy Traditionand the iconographic canon. In additionto this striking visual experience,pavilion visitors were able to take homewith them a well-re search ed pamphlet,providing a thorough introduction intothe history, theology, styles and makingof an icon in Ukrain ian tradition. This icon was featuredon the materials distributed at the pavilion.Other names for the Theoto kos arethe Holy Virgin and the Mother of God.Referred to as Most High, Most Pureand as an Ever Virgin, she is glorifiedhigher than all of creation including theangelic world. This high honour, significanceand veneration of the The otokosis accorded to her in the Gospels as wellas in the living Holy Tradition of theChurch. Moreover, four of the 12 Ma jorFeast Days in the annual Church calendarare dedicated to the Theoto kos. Але дане словомає ще інше духовне значення. Вер -теп—це серце людини, в котрому засвідченням ап. Автором, який впершенадру ку вав текст вертепу, являєтьсяМикола Маркевич. Вчені припуска -ють, що пер ші вертепні дійства по -ходять з XVI-XVII ст. Саме першавер тепна скри нь ка була схожа на бу -диночок, що мав два поверхи, які захристиянською традицією трак ту -ва лися як "небо і земля". Правдавер тепні сценки, в пев ний час змі -нювалися, але у своїй суті вони зав -жди передавали містерію Різ два.Мі нялися лише літературні та сце -ніч ні форми, але ніколи не міня ласяосновна вістка, про яку роз по віда ю -ть вертепні персонажі. Темою вер -тепних сценок завжди були бі б лійнісюжети. Вертеп колись був ля лько -вим, з яким ходили наші пред ки похатах найзаможніших госпо дарів.Вертепна скринька була поді лена надва поверхи. THE HERALDDecember 201217Last Service at St. Mary’s…n WATERFORD, ON—The St. Mary the Protectoress parish in Waterford, Onta -rio celebrated its final Divine Liturgy on April 21, 2012 before the parish’s closure.His Grace Bishop Andriy made a visitation on this day, and led the HierarchicalDivine Liturgy and Moleben’. There was also a final Panakhyda memorial conductedat the cemetery. This was a poignant and historic occasion for the approximately70 people gathered. St. Mary’s started up in 1967 and held monthly servicesun til it was affected by demographic shifts, aging membership and insufficientfi nan ces to con tinue operating. The parish officially disbanded in late 2011,but org anized one final closing service before the property’s dispersal. The parishionersleave the parish as they opened it—with prayers of thanks to the Lord ourGod for His blessings gifted to the parish over the years. The parishioners leavewith cherished memories of baptisms, marriages, Paschal and Nativity celebrations.Re main ing with the parishioners always will be the many Divine Liturgies,where they prayed for their salvation and participated in Holy Communion.The Nativity Fast"What sacrifices we make, let them besacrifices that transform us. They arenot ends in and of themselves. They aretools by which we can become a littlecloser to God’s image, a little closer toChrist’s life."—St John Chrysostomn The Nativity Fast begins on Nov -ember 28 and lasts 40 days until theeve of the Feast Day of the Nativity ofour Lord and Sav iour, Jesus Christ.This fast also carries the name St. Phi -lip’s Fast because it be gins the day afterthe Feast Day commemorating St. Phi -lip. Fasting in the Orthodox Churchin volves our whole being. First of all,there is the aspect of dietary restrictions.We refrain from consumingmeat, milk and eggs for the duration ofthe Fast. These restrictions are modifiedfor children, the sick, the aged andother such cases. TheUkrainian Canadian Congress, AlbertaProvincial Council held their 14th An -nual Hetman Awards Banquet and Ga -la on Sunday Oct.14, 2012 at the Uk -rainian Youth Unity Complex in Ed -monton, Alberta.Korneil Ozipko was awarded theHet man Award in the senior category.Andrew Feniuk had the privilege of no -minating Korneil and submitting thenecessary information in support ofthis award. Many dignitaries attended,members of the Legislative Assem b ly,former Premier Ed Stelmach and hiswife Marie as well as Gene Zwoz desky,current Speaker of the Alberta Le gis -lature and others.Since 1988, Korneil Ozipko has beenan active member of St. Michael’s par -ish. Eve ry day, he contributes his abi -lities to volunteering and fundraisingCommunity Newsfor the parish. Korneil also is part ofthe parish administration, sitting onthe building committee, financial re -view committee, along with being ahall chairperson, bingo chairpersonand inventory recorder. For the parish’sMen’s Society, he is involved as socialconvener, financial review committee,and tirelessly works with the bingosand casinos. Kor neil has been a memberof St. John’s Fraternal Society since1978, rais ing funds for the Ukrainiancommunity. He has served on the boardof directors, and in the positions of secondvice president, first vice president,president as well as honorary memberof the society. Through the Council ofUkrainian Orthodox Churches of Ed -monton, serving as board secretary,Kor neil has helped the organization topurchase and develop land in northeastEdmonton to use as a cemetery forthe Ukrainian community. The lecture-recital was organizedby the Centre for Ukrainian CanadianStudies, Faculty of Arts, University ofManitoba, under whose auspices these ries is managed. The evening, takingplace at the Eva Clare Hall at the Fa cul -ty of Music, was chaired by Prof. Ro -man Yereniuk, Acting Director ofCUCS. He presented the backgroundto Prof. Michael and Dr. Iraida Tarna -wecky, two longtime professors of theUniversity of Manitoba. Their importantvision to establish the Distin gu -ish ed Lecture Series in 2002 has providedthe U of M and the Ukrainian Canadiancommunity of Winnipeg with amost prestigious event every two yearsthat honours prominent UkrainianCanadian academics. Furth er, Dr. Ye re -niuk provided the background to thetwo academics chosen for 2012—Dr.Luba Zuk and Dr. Ire neus Zuk.The Zuks provided the attentive au -dience with an evening of foremostduo piano music, including an introductorydescription of each work aswell as a critical evaluation and informationabout each composer. Sub se -quently, music was performed by suchUkrainian or Ukrainian Canadiancom posers as: Myroslaw Skoryk (1939-present)—Entrada; Fedir Akimenko(1876-1945)—Six Pieces Ukrainiennesof which two were performed, Dumkaand Lystopad; Ihor Bilohrud (1916-1992)—Sonatina; Yuriy Fiala (1922-pre sent)—Concerto da Camera; EvhenStankovych (1942-present)—AncientDances of Verkhovyna; Gary Kulesha(1954-present)—excerpt from Mytho -logies; Halyna Ovcharenko (1963-present)—Five Fragments; Hennadij La -shenko (1938-present)—…i Dzvo nyDyv noho Zvuchannia and Lesia Dy -chok (1939-present)—Dramatic Tryp -tych. The balance between composersof Ukraine and of Ukrainian Canadianorigins was most appropriate. Notably,4 of the composers wrote their worksespecially for the Zuk Piano Duo, atrue honour for their outstandingmastery of the piano.All the musical compositions wererooted in the Ukrainian experience,Uk rainian folklore and traditions. So -metimes, folk songs provided the in -spiration for the music, or even churchbells as well as the liturgical music Re -surrectional chant of Khrys tos Vos kres,or Christ is Risen. As such, this en rich -ed the music of the 20th cent ury composersfrom Ukraine and Ca nada.Melita Mudri-Zubacz and ViktoriaGrynenko, Faculty of Music studentswho also take CUCS’s courses presentedthe two distinguished piano artistswith flowers. The evening ended withthe entire audience standing up andsinging a vigorous and resounding NaMnohii Lita, or May They Be GrantedMany Years as a fitting salute to the twoperformers. Dr. Denis Hlynka, chair ofthe Policy Council of the CUCS, deliveredthe closing remarks and expressedgratitude to the performers. He stated,"We have witnessed a cornucopia ofmu sic: Skoryk’s Spanish melodies, Aki -menko’s Ukrainian themes, Bilo hrud’spedagogic excusions and Fiala’s wonderfulatonality—the kind that the un -initiated will listen to thinking thateve ry single note sounds wrong(!) andintuitively understand that it was ex -actly right. Then, we heard Kulesha’sKhry stos Voskres coming from one pia -no, with contemporary soundscapescoming from the other. There wasStankovych’s pounding rhythms fromVerkhovyna; there were not one buttwo women composers—Halya Ov -cha renko and Lesia Dychko, the latterdeparting from her often heard chor almusic. Finally, Lashenko’s im pression -istic sounds of a storm brewing, coupledwith bells and the rustling ofDr. Ireneus Zuk (left) and Dr. Luba Zuk (right).leaves and the sound of wind, like anearly October blizzard. We have witnessedan amazing evening of pianomusic and deserving recognition is dueto the polished piano duo of Luba andIreneus Zuk. Святині Підлісців і МлинівцівТому і постала тут в селі Підліс -цях на місці муро ваної церкви Бла -го віщення Пресвя тої Богородицідерев'яна Богданова каплиця. 18Тоді було упорядковано тут і мо -гили похованих козаків при церков -ному прадавньому кладовищі, якезнаходилося за вівтарем церквиБла говіщення Пресвятої Богориці.Про поховання тут козаків БогданаХмельницького історичні джерелапо відомляють так:—В селі на стоці гори, старі мо -гил ки, де за переказами старожилівв 1651 році було поховано багатопо мерлих від ран поранених козаківпід Берестечком з війська гетьманаБогдана Хмельницького. 19 Ці святімогили старанно і дбайливо догляд -алися місцевими жителями, які засвою любов до померлих героїв Ук -раїни зазнавали переслідувань з бо -ку польських окупантів, московсько-більшовицьких катів. В 20-30-х. ро -ках XX ст. польська окупаційна вла -да забороняла будь-які заходи сві -до мим крем'янчанам і українцямна вколишніх сіл, пов'язані з уві ко -віченням пам'яті похованих коза -цьких лицарів, а московські церков -ні окупанти довели Богданову кап -лицю до цілковитої руїни.Ось як про це описала по своїхвід відинах на початку 70-х років XXст. святині в Підлісцях Неоніла Кре -м'ян чанка в розділі “Богданова кап -ли ця” у своїй книзі: “Орлине гніз до”.—На середині гірського схилу,не подалік од Підлісець стояла середлісу зруйнована біла церковиця. Їїсті ни із залишками залізних обру -чів, що колись стягували їх докупи,розійшлися, і між ними сяяли ве -ликі, на півметра, а то й більше щі -лини. Даху не було—він давно упав.Від цієї картини на душі нам сталоневимовне боляче... Не раз навітьпідселялися сюди лихі безбатченки,які били і руйнували стіни... 20Богданова церква-каплиця в Під -лісцях була зруйнована місцевимислугами безбожного червоного ім -пе ріалізму, а козацькі могили надав ньому цвинтарі за вівтарем свя -тині «невідомі» почали нищити,роз бивати хрести, над мо ги льніпли ти, топтати нашу пам'я ть, нашіісторичні святощі, нашу лю бов івіру. Неоніла Крем'янчанка в роз -ділі “Богданова каплиця” за пи салатакі рядки:—Я уважно слухала старенькоговчи теля, а перед очима раптом з'я -ви лася надзвичайна картина: я зно -ву побачила капличку, але не зруй -новану, а, навпаки,—тільки щойнопобудовану... її стіни приємно пах -нуть сосновою смолою. Блищать упроменях ранішнього сонця новабляшана покрівля. Івана, редактор газети“Галицьке-Волинські відомості” по -ділилися з студентами-прочанамисвоїми знаннями, історії села, цер -кви в селі Підлісці.Мої студенти, Валерій Громик,Ан дрій і Назар Дуди, Василь Білоус іінші допомагали мені оглянути, під -рахувати, виміряти, зазняти на плів -ку все те, що залишилося від пра -дав нього кладовища за вівтаремхра му, козацьких могил, розкида -них по підошві гори.Ліворуч від входу у відбудовануБогданову церкву знаходиться вці -лі ла могила з невисоким кам'янимхрестом з прямокутними раме на -ми, а надмогильна плита зберігаєна півстерті часом непрочитані сло -ва. Вона єдина залишилася від ве ли -кого прадавнього з 15-16 століт тякла довища, на якому було похо ванодесятки померлих від ран, отри ма -них в бою під Берестечком у червні1651 році, козацьких лица рів, яківід дали своє життя за волю Укра -їни.Віковий азійський ворог нашоїдер жави і нашого народу і нашоїдер жавності не щадив наших свя ти -нь, могил, плюндрував і нищивнашу духовність, нашу пам'ять.Після молитви у відбудованійцер кві Богдана, прощаємося з отця -ми Іваном та Михайлом Мазур чука -ми, редактором часопису “Га ли цько-Волинські відомості” і виру шаємодо Крем'янця. Ми довго милува ли -ся неповторними краєви дами Кре -м'янця і його околиць, оглянулидав ні церкви мі ста, приміщення19Волинської Духов ної семінарії 1919-1939 років в Кр ем'янці, в якому нинізнахо диться краєзнавчий музей.По дорозі до Луцька зупинялисяу Страклеві, оглянули монастир сь -кий храм Різдва Пресвятої Богоро -ди ці, і одночасно мали змогу по чутинеписані сторінки історії свя тині зуст її настоятеля отця Івана Дуди,який, як справжній ду ховний бать -ко, зустрів нас у храмі, поблаго сло -вив нашу дорогу, надихнув на новідуховні пошуки та знахідки. В храміми мали змогу прикластися до мо -щів дев'ятьох святих, давньої благо -датної ікони Божої Матері, пригос -титися пиріжками, випече ни ми са -мим отцем Іваном Дудою.Ми поверталися потомлені, але зцілою низкою незабутніх враженьдодому, які ще довго будуть на ди ха -ти майбутніх душпастирів у їхньо -му глибшому пізнанні нашого ми -ну лого з його радощами і болями.Богданова церква в с. Thewording on this date reads, "TheEntry of the Most Holy Theo to -kos into the Temple". The The o -to kos is the traditional Greek na -me for Mary, the Mother of God,and the Ukrainian name is Bo -ho rodytsia.According to Holy Tradition, along time ago there lived a couplenamed Joachim and Annawho were reaching old age andstill did not have any children.An na prayed and prayed. Sheask ed God to give her a little ba -by and she promised that theywould dedicate this child to theservice of God. God heard An -na’s prayer. He gave her andJoa chim a lovely baby girl. Theynamed the little girl Mary.To keep their promise to God,they took her to the temple whenshe was three years old. Thiswas a very special occasion somany friends, relatives and peoplein the community joined thisspecial procession. Mary wasdressed in her finest clothes.Ma ny children walked alongsidecarrying lighted candles.There were 15 long stepsleading to the door of the temple.Little three-year old Mary walkedup those steps all alone. There,the high priest Zacharias mether at the door. Zacharias bless -ed her, took her by the hand andled her to the very holiest placein the temple. No one had theright to enter this holy place ex -cept the high priest and he coulddo so only once a year. However,Zacharias was enlightened byGod that Mary had been chosenby Him and was worthy to enterthis sacred place. Mary remain -ed at the temple from this timeuntil she was of marriageableage. In ourChurch in Canada, the traditionhas been for everyone to gatherafter the Divine Li turgy in thechurch hall. A St. Ni cholas FeastDay concert is usually heldwhere the children sing specialsongs dedicated to this Saint’sDay and perform skits andplays. After wards, the childrenwould re ceive small gifts andcandies, of ten from so me onedressed as St. Nicholas in aflowing beard and robes. The seconcerts are done to re-enactthe story of the St. Nicho lasFeast Day and to remind us ofSt. Nicholas’ generosity in givinggifts to people, especially tochildren.St. Nicholas was the Bishopof Myra who served and helpedpeople all of his life. For his dedicationto God and generosity,he was recognized as a Saint.St. Ni cholas’ good works continuetoday through his intercession.He still helps us when wepray for his help, especiallywhen we wish to help those lessfortunate. As a Bishop, St. Ni -cho las did not wait for people tocome to him to ask for help. Hewent out and looked to see whowas hungry or in need of someassistance. Itwas led by His Grace Bishop Ilarion ofEd monton and the Western Eparchy,Chap lain for Youth of the UOCC. Theconcept of a trip to Ukraine to visit andhelp in orphanages was first introducedto the Western Eparchy by His GraceBishop Ilarion at the annual WesternEparchy Assembly in 2011. The idea metwith en thusiasm and hope that people inCan ada, specifically in the WesternEparchy, could and would get involved incharity work in their ancestral ho me -land. The focus was on our youth fromCanada tra velling to Ukraine. Many be -nefits could come from such a trip, in -cluding introducing our youth to the dif -ferent ways in which people live andlearning about historic and religious sitesin the homeland from which theirgrandparents left many years ago. Peo plein Ca nada today enjoy many com forts,which were gained be cause of the hardwork and sacrifices made by the pioneerswho helped build this nation, particularlythe western part of this country. Now,it is time for us to give back, to extendour good life and fortune to the countrywhe re many of us still have roots.The First Trip to UkraineThe first step in this adventure startedwith the dream to pursue a projectHis Grace Bishop Ilarion speaks with orphanage children and staff.Youth pagenever accomplished by the West ernEparchy. His Grace Bishop Ila rionintroduced this dream to us and plantedit in our hearts and minds throughhis initial encouragement and support.Realizing this dream required courage,faith and planning. It remains a workin progress. We persevered to overco -me ob stacles, and with God’s help, wemanaged to complete the first trip. Webe lieve it was a successful trip, and onethat was valuable to all—both in Can -ada and in Ukraine.This first mission trip to Ukrainewas a learning experience in manyways, from start to finish. We learn edhow to organize and plan such a trip;how to establish contacts in Ukraine;how to choose our team; and how totake care of the logistics of travel to aforeign country that is different fromCanada in many ways.Now that we have undertaken thison ce, we can build on the positivesand minimize the challenges. It wasdif ficult to begin, but once started,with faith in God and the help of manypeople, the dream became a reality andwill continue.Some of the accomplishmentsof this first trip are:1. The group visited four orphanageslocated in Za po rizhia and in Sam -bir and saw first-hand what life is likein an orphanage. "We saw how or -phans ha ve been getting help in Uk -raine and what kind of aid they re -quire," said a youth participant. "Thisexperience ex posed me to a range ofchildren both with and without disabilities,"added yet another participant.We saw the children, many of themwith special ne eds, and saw what thechildren experience on a daily basis."The most me morable thing was theperformance that the orphans did forus on our last day at the girls’ orphanage,"another youth participant added,"There were so me really good singersand despite having disabilities they allcontributed in some way to make a joyfulexperien ce for everyone." We wereable to purchase many large items thatwere needed, such as a furnace, multiplesets of washers and dryers, basicpersonal items like diapers, shampoo,toothpaste, and more. We also donatedsome treats for the children. "I learnedthat there are lots of orphans in Uk -raine that need our help, and thatthings as simple as a dryer or diaperscan make a positive difference in theirlives," said one youth taking part.2. The group visited numerous historicand religious sites, including fourmonasteries, many churches and otherplaces of religious significance. "Themost me morable thing for me wasgoing to the tombs at Kyiv PercheskaLavra," said one youth participant."The most significant part was meetingpeople with similar faiths and wantingto help out those in need," said anotherparticipant.3. The group had a chance to seemuch of Uk raine, travelling from Cen -tral to East ern to Western Ukraine, co -v ering 2000 km by boat, by train andby bus. We crossed through many re -gions, met many different people, andexperienced many aspects of life in Uk -raine. "This trip showed that Can -adians do care about their cultural mo -therland," commented one youth participant.When most groups go toUkraine, they go for a specific reasonsuch as to sing or dance or culturalevents. Our group cho se to visit or -phan ages, to experience the historyand religion of Ukraine, and to participatein the liturgical and Church lifein Ukraine. This was a good way to ex -perience growth in our spiritual life.One participant noted, "This tripstrengthened my faith in knowing thatthe younger generation still cares tohelp those in need."4. We had a chance to build character,especially patience, by enduring hotweather and travelling great distances.We had to be prepared for un expectedsituations.5. All of the funds used by the groupwere donated by generous people inthe Western Eparchy. We received don -ations from more than 166 individuals,12 parishes, and 7 organizations as wellas many anonymous donations. We al -so had generous parishes that sponsoredyouth participants as well. "Myparticipation gave the children the ex -perience of love while we were there aswell as gifts that they received that willhelp them in their everyday life," oneyouth participant commented on thevalue of the trip.It is not possible to adequately de -scribe what the children in Ukraine re -ceived from our group—not just theitems we purchased, or the gifts wedonated, but the warm, personal interactionwe shared with them. One youth participantsummarized the trip this way: "Thistrip helped show me the roots of Uk -rainian Orthodoxy and the power thatfaith has to the people of Ukraine.Though they may not be wealthy, theyare rich in love and faith."In the end, the participants of thisMission Trip received more than wegave. Цьогоро ку відбулися: виховно-відпочин -ковий табір, табір малят, і кобзарсь -кий табір. На оселю прибули понадшістьдесят дітей з Америки і Кана -ди. Найулюбленішим для дітей є ви -ховно-відпочинковий табір. Дітима ють можливість проводити бага -то часу на природі, плавати в басей -ні, займатися різними видами спор -ту. Поряд із розвагами в таборі зав -ж ди панує порядок і дисципліна.Кож ного разу діти розпочинаютьсні данок, обід і вечерю з молитви.Коб зарський табір включає в себевивчення гри на бандурі. Профе сій -ні інструктoри плекають у табо рянлюбов до національного ін стру мен -ту і до української пісні.Після обіду Владика Андрій ог ля -нув відпочинкову оселю "Укра ї на" ізауважив, що багато зусиль і пра цідля проведення літніх таборів при -кладають таборові виховники.Основним завданням ОДУМ-у єви ховання української молоді вхри стиянському та національномудусі. Дуже важливо, що наставникитабору передають молоді традиціїна шого народу, зберігають україн -сь ку мову, навчають українських пі -сень. Слід віддати належну по ша ну іподяку основоположникам осе лі"Ук раїна". Схиляємо наші головипе ред всіма членами ОДУМ-у, яківідійшли від нас у вічність. Завдякистаранням наших попередників, на -ша молодь має мальовничу оселю"Ук раїна"—це велике надбання длямайбутніх поколінь. Віддаємо на -леж не признання і сьогоднішнімпро відникам ОДУМ-у, бо вони та -кож прикладають багато зусиль,щоб зберегти вже давно започат ко -ва ні літні табори. Of thevenerable saints from the Ukrainianlands, St. Olha’s saintly light shinesamong the brightest, having sown theseeds of the Christian faith in theUkrainian lands more than 1000 yearsago. Bishop An driy was greeted at thecamp with great joy by camp chair anddirector Taras Lishchyna, camp committeemember Marusia Baranyk,director and manager of the campRosa Brenen, ODUM central executivechair Vera Petrusha as well as one ofthe founders of the camp and honourarychair Mykola Spivak.Following this official greeting, HisGrace Bishop Andriy celebrated a Mo -leben’ of Thanksgiving and gave an en -lightening homily which focused onthe need to educate the younger generationin the Christian mission. Themain rule of Christian life must befaith in God and fulfilling His Com -mandments. His Grace also urgedyouth and children to become moreactive in Church life and regularlyattend Sunday Divine Litur gies in theirparishes because only a life with God isthe key to future happiness. Bishop An -driy captivated those at tend ing and hetruly planted the seed of the faith inChrist in the children’s hearts. A deliciousmeal, which was bles sed by Bi shopAndriy, followed the Mo le ben’.This year, there was an educationalresortcamp, camp for small children,and a Kobzar camp. Over 60 childrenfrom America and Canada attended thecamp. The youth enjoyed most the educational-resortcamp where they couldbe outside, swim and play a variety ofsports. The camp was enjoyable, but23always conducted with order and discipline.Every day, breakfast, lunch anddinner are preceded by prayer. At theKobzar camp the youth learned to playthe ban dura and professional in structorsinstilled in the campers a love for theUkrainian national instrument and forUkrainian song. Follow ing the meal,Bishop Andriy toured the camp facilities,noting all of the effort and work thecamp leaders put into holding the camp.ODUM’s main goal is to educate theUkrainian youth in the Christian andnational spirit. It is important that thecamp educators pass on our Uk rain iantraditions to the youth, preserve theUk rainian language, and teach ourUkrainian songs. Our respect and gra -titude are extended to the founders ofcamp Ukraina as well as to all thoseODUM members who have fallenasleep in the Lord. The efforts of ourpredecessors have resulted in ouryouth having this picturesque campUkraina—this is a great legacy for fu -tu re generations. The current ODUMleadership must be acknowledged fortheir great efforts to preserve the summercamps begun so long ago. Thanksalso are extended to the parents whobring their children to summer camp,who wish to raise their children in aUk rainian patriotic spirit and whowish to have their children meet otherUkrainian-speaking youth. Починався7-го грудня із іменин нашої мами, акінчався влітку, 12-го липня, післявід значення іменин нашого тата.День св. Катерини був для мамиособливо дорогим. Вона ж успад ку -ва ла ім'я Катерини по мамі свогоба тька. А бабуня упокоїлася колиси ночок мав тільки сім рочків. Ось ізараз ми стоїмо напередодні 7-гогру дня. Це є мамине найдорожчесвя то і вперше в нашому житті мизустрінемо цей день без мами. То жзгадаймо нашу незабутню маму іба буню у світлий зимовий день св.Катерини.Народилася Катя у родині о. про -тоієрея Йосипа Василіва і добро дій -ки Єлисавети Василів (з дому Біле -цької) під польською окупацією уВидерті, Камінь-Каширського пові -ту на Поліссі. За словами замуче но -го поета Фальківського, Катя люби -ла казати:—“Очерет мені був за ко -лиску”. Катя росла серед маленькихполішуків і гралася з ними босоніжу піску. Їла смачні серединки лепехи,зібрані на краю багна, а вечорамислу хала концерти жаб. Доглядаламо лодшу сестричку Любу і була не -відступною супутницею батька привсіх требах—хрестинах, вінчаннях іпохоронах.Шлях зростання малої Каті небув легкий. Почерез змінні політич -ні обставини батькові приходилосяслужити на різних парафіях і роди -на часто переїжджала із села до се -ла. Незважаючи на те, що освітуздо бувалося із перервами та полі -тичними обмеженнями, Катя виро -сла свідомою українкою. До 1934 p.закінчила дві народні кляси по ль -ської школи. Тільки Закон Бо жийслу хала в українській мові з устбатька, о. Йосипа. Переїхавши з ро -ди ною до Білогородки, закін чи ла у1937 p. 4-ту клясу народної школи.Там таки була година укра їн ськоїмови. Тоді Катя поїхала до Ков ля, досестри свого батька, щоб закінчитит. зв. польську семикля сівку. Тітка іхресна мама Павлина Семенюк по -дбала про те, щоб Катя ходила у Ко -влі до єдиної української школи.У 1939 p. о. Йосип був уже на па -рафії у Боголюбах і у червні Катясклала іспит до української гімназії уЛуцьку. Та вересень приніс епоха ль -ну зміну. Волинь стала окупована ра -дянською армією і родина втікла наХолмщину, на батьківщину Каті ногобатька. Літом 1940 p. Катя схо пиласячитати українську літера ту ру, а увересні склала іспит і була прийнятадо 4-ої кляси в Україн сь кій Клясич -ній Академічній Гімназії у Холмі.Травень 1944 p. Зближався фронт.Бували налети і гімназію зачинили.Родина подалася на захід різнимитранспортами і зустріла закінченнявійни аж у Баварії, у курортному мі -стечку Бад-Кіссінген. Уже після ка -пітуляції Катя вступила до 8-ої кля -си Української Реальної Гімназії ута борі Ной Ульм. Закінчивши ма ту -ру у червні 1946 p. (Випуск І), Ка тяпо далася до Йоган Волфганг Гете Уні -верситету у Франкфурті-ам-Майн.Спочатку студіювала філоло гію, апісля першого семестру пере йшлана медицину. По двох з поло виноюроках медичних студій Катя про пра -цювала рік в амбулаторії в та борі Ді-Пі Цуффенгаузен мед сес трою.У серпні 1949 p. Катя відплила доКанади, на спонсорство сестри Лю -би, яка була вже на контракті одинрік на фабриці текстилю у Гаміль то -ні. Батьки плили разом, бо крімспонсорства Люби, о. Повіває чутьне осінній вітерець, та тепле про -мін ня сонечка падає їй на обличчя.Ба буся дивиться на проїжджі авта.Думає, що незабаром перехрестяна повниться діточками, які спіши -тимуть до шкіл. Неподалік школа,куди ходили її діти, Василько і Галю -ня. Ходила туди і її улюблена внуч -ка, Наталочка. Тепер туди іще ходи -ть її найменший внук, малий Петро.Нараз сильно подув вітерець.Глип! Мама уболівала замайбутнє нас дітей. Вона була пос -тій ною дорадницею у нашому змагудо вищої освіти, і раділа, коли ми ле -тіли усе вище й вище, до тих зір про -зорих, і планет незнаних, нео зо рих.Брат Василь став знаний як ком по -зи тор і музиколог, а я, здо був ши док -торат із лінгвістики, займа юся ре -дак ційними проектами, як та кожупо рядкуванням родинного архіву тамистецької спадщини на шого та та.Та й на цьому мамині зусилля незупинилися. Мама раділа, що внуч каНаталя чудово вишиває і заохо -чувала її до дальших здобутків уділянці математики. Дуже такожлю била внука Петруся. У перед шкі -льні роки читала йому книжечки івчила розпізнавати букви. Одногодня сказала йому, що осінню він пі -де до школи. А Петрусь відповів,—Бабцю, ти моя школа. Для бабуні бу -ла найбільша радість почути такепри знання із уст 4-ри річного вну ка.Разом із татом, мама виростила ме -не з братом із того вікового ко рін ня,що є родинне, здорове, струн ке. Во навиплекала у нас лю бов до ба тьків -щини і до всього минулого та пере -житого. Знаємо йо го ціну, розу мі ємойого вартість. Ми пішли і бу де мо далійти доро гою свойого роду. Віримо,що і вну ки підуть цією до ро гою.Не минуло два тижні від упо ко -єння бабуні, як малий внучок наразспитався у сестрички,—Наталю, чити пам'ятаєш бабцю?—Певно, щопам'ятаю,—відповіла сестричка.То ж нехай пам'ять про нашу найдорожчуМаму і Бабуню, св. п.
