Moreover, it iswith much anguish and sorrow that we beholdthe related devastation in the Land <strong>of</strong> theRising Sun as well as in other nations <strong>of</strong> thePacific. Every corner <strong>of</strong> the planet is <strong>of</strong>feringprayers both for the repose <strong>of</strong> the departedsouls and for the support <strong>of</strong> those who continueto be grieved and imperiled by the ensuingseismic tremors and ferocious tsunami. La -mentably, yet another calamitous consequencehas struck the region with the explosion <strong>of</strong> thenuclear plant at Fukushima, rendering stillmore frightening the recent nightmare inJapan.The disastrous ramifications <strong>of</strong> this eventwill become more evident over the next days.Of course, with regard to the earthquake, nohuman response is adequate. The causes andresults eclipse human words. Never the less, withregard to the explosion <strong>of</strong> the nuclear reactorand the aftermath <strong>of</strong> a nuclear adversity, thereВІСНИКтравень 2011ist action, reveal our world to be in horribletorment and an guish from the pressure <strong>of</strong> thenatural and spiritual forces <strong>of</strong> evil.Nevertheless, the Resurrection <strong>of</strong> Christ isindeed real and grants to faith ful Christians thecertainty—and to all humanity the possibility—<strong>of</strong>transcending the adverse consequences<strong>of</strong> natural calamity and spiritual perversity.Nature rebels when the arrogant hu manmind endeavors to tame its boundless forcesendowed by the Creator to its seemingly in sig -nificant and inactive elements. In consideringfrom a spiritual perspective the griev ous naturalphenomena that plague our planet repeatedlyand successively in recent times, we appreciateand acknowledge the belief that these areinseparable from the spiritual and ethical deviation<strong>of</strong> humanity. The signs <strong>of</strong> this deviation—suchas greed, avarice, and an insatiabledesire for material wealth, alongside an indifferencetoward the poverty endured by so manyas a result <strong>of</strong> the imbalanced af fluence <strong>of</strong> thefew—may not be clearly related to the naturaloccurrences in the eyes <strong>of</strong> scientists. Yet, forsomeone examining the matter spiritually, sindisturbs the harmony <strong>of</strong> spiritual and naturalrelations alike. For, there is a mystical connectionbetween moral and natural evil; if we wishto be liberated from the latter, we must rejectthe former.Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ, the new Adamand God, constitutes the model for the beneficialinfluence <strong>of</strong> a saint on the natural world.For Christ healed physical and spiritual illness,granting comfort and healing to all people,while at the same time bringing calm and peaceto stormy seas, multiplying five loaves <strong>of</strong> breadto feed the five thousand, thereby combiningthe reconciliation <strong>of</strong> spiritual and natural harmony.If we want to exert a po sitive impact onthe current negative natural and political conditions<strong>of</strong> our world, then we have no otheralternative than faith in the Risen Christ andfulfillment <strong>of</strong> his saving commandments.Christ has risen and given new life to theperfect ethos <strong>of</strong> human kind, which had darkenedthis ethos. Christ be came the first-bornand pioneer <strong>of</strong> the regeneration <strong>of</strong> the worldand the whole <strong>of</strong> creation. The message <strong>of</strong> theResurrection is not empty <strong>of</strong> meaning for thequality <strong>of</strong> human life and the balanced function<strong>of</strong> nature. As we completely and pr<strong>of</strong>oundlyexperience the Resurrection <strong>of</strong> Christin the depth <strong>of</strong> our heart, our existence shallfavorably impact upon all humanity and thenatural world. The natural sciences may not yetfully have underlined the relationship betweenthe regeneration <strong>of</strong> humanity and the renewal<strong>of</strong> creation, but the experience <strong>of</strong> the saints —which should be the aim <strong>of</strong> our own experience—confirmsthe experientially proven factthat, indeed, a person reborn in Christ restoresthe harmony <strong>of</strong> the natural world disturbed bysin. In Christ, the saint can move mountainsfor the good <strong>of</strong> the world, while the sinful person,who opposes the ways <strong>of</strong> God, can shakethe earth and raise destructive waves.Let us approach the sanctity <strong>of</strong> the RisenChrist in order, through His grace, to calm thenatural and moral waves that trouble ourworld today.<strong>May</strong> the grace <strong>of</strong> our Risen Lord Je susChrist be with you all, beloved children in theLord. Ecologicallyfriendlyscience and technology has discoveredways and means <strong>of</strong> producing sustainableforms <strong>of</strong> energy for our ecosystem. Therefore,we ask: Why do we persist in adopting suchdangerous sources <strong>of</strong> energy? THE HERALD<strong>May</strong> 2011Pastoral Message from the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Catholic and the <strong>Ukrainian</strong><strong>Orthodox</strong> Hierarchs <strong>of</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America and <strong>Canada</strong>25th Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Chornobyl Tragedyn Twenty-five years ago, in the earlymorning hours <strong>of</strong> Satur day, April 26,1986, the residents <strong>of</strong> Prypiat, a largetown and administrative centre locatedon the river <strong>of</strong> the same name, one <strong>of</strong>the many tributaries along the upperreaches <strong>of</strong> the mighty Dnipro north <strong>of</strong>the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> capital, Kyiv, were awakenedfrom their sleep by an event thatwould change their lives forever. Thisevent was <strong>of</strong> such immense proportions,that its devastating effects spreadfar beyond the limits <strong>of</strong> the city andeven <strong>of</strong> Ukraine itself, and indeed, theyare still being felt today.At precisely 1:23 am local time ahuge explosion rocked Re act or No.4 <strong>of</strong>the nearby Chornobyl Nuclear PowerStation, split ting its walls and sending atoxic plume <strong>of</strong> radioactive fallout, 400times greater than that emitted by theatomic bomb in Hiroshima, high intothe night sky. Although the Soviet au -thorities initially attempted to minimizethe magnitude <strong>of</strong> the nu clear accidentand even deny its occurrence, theimmense scale <strong>of</strong> the disaster becamequickly evident to the entire world asthe toxic cloud passed from Ukraineinto Russia, Belarus and eventually intoScandinavia and Western Europe.The economic, environmental andhuman costs <strong>of</strong> the nu clear accident inChornobyl that night have been trulystaggering. Many people living in theim mediate vicinity <strong>of</strong> the power plantwere killed outright in the aftermath <strong>of</strong>the explosion. Many more sufferedago nizing deaths due to radiation sickness.Others were sickened with cancersand other illnesses directly linkedto excessive exposure to radiation.Chil dren proved especially vulnerable.It is estimated that in the 25 years sincethe catastrophe, over 4,000 children inUkraine, Belarus and Rus sia have be -come ill with thyroid cancer. The irnum bers are still growing.The explosion and ensuing radioactivecontamination also forced theevacuation and eventual resettlement<strong>of</strong> 350,000 people living in Chornobyland in 90 separate communities in thesurrounding area. The Chornobyl Ex -clu sion Zone—an area almost 40 milesin diameter surrounding the crippledpower plant—is <strong>of</strong>f limits to humanhabitation and will remain so for generationsto come because <strong>of</strong> radioactivetoxins that have poisoned the oncerich and productive soil.A quarter century on, the catastrophein Chornobyl remains the largestand most devastating nuclear accidentin history and has rightly been de -scribed as the technological disaster <strong>of</strong>the 20th century.Recalling and reflecting upon thesesobering and saddening facts on the25th anniversary <strong>of</strong> the Chornobylcatastrophe, we can only lift up ourhearts in prayer to the Al mighty Godand beg for His continued mercy andcompassion as we remember those whosuffered indescribable pain and loss.We recall firstly, on this solemnanniversary, the many innocent men,women and children who perished inthis tragedy and we pray for the repose<strong>of</strong> their souls. We remember in particularthe brave and selfless firefighters,who, in the hours and days followingthe explosion, know ingly and willinglyexposed themselves to mortal dangerand almost certain death in or der toextinguish the flames and constructand place the sarcophagus on thesmouldering ruins <strong>of</strong> the reactor. Ofsuch men Christ speaks eloquentlywhen He declares: "Greater love has noone than this, than to lay down one’s lifefor his friends." (Jn. 15:13) We pray thatGod grant them eternal rest in a place<strong>of</strong> everlasting light where there is nopain, sorrow or mourning.We also remember and pray fortho se whose health was irrevocably da -maged by the radiation that wasreleased that day, those who were takenill and are living with sickness to thisday, and for their families, and for tho -se whose lives were cut short by prematuredeath. We especial ly re mem berthe children, most <strong>of</strong> whom who wereborn after the catastrophe itself, whosuffer physical and psychological disabilitiesto day because <strong>of</strong> Chornobyl.We also remember and pray for themany thousands <strong>of</strong> people who wereforced, by the noxious cloud <strong>of</strong> radiation,to flee their homes and leave be -hind forever, everything that was fam -iliar and loved by them: the villages,houses, fields and farms whe re theyand generations before them wereborn, lived, laboured and died. <strong>May</strong>God grant all who suffer His peace, ho -pe and consolation.And, in a special way, we also re -member and pray for our beloved ho -meland <strong>of</strong> Ukraine: so rich, generousand abundant, yet so <strong>of</strong>ten ne glected,plundered, and abused over the centuriesby the men who ruled over her.We read in the opening verses <strong>of</strong>Holy Scrip ture in the Book <strong>of</strong> Genesisthat, after creating Adam and Eve, Godthe Father blessed them and entrustedthe earth and everything that He hadcreated on it to them and their posteritysaying: "Be fruitful and multiply; fillthe earth and subdue it, and havedominion... over every living thing thatmoves on the earth." (Gen. 1:28) "ThenGod saw everything He had made, andindeed it was very good." (Gen. 1:31)As the summit <strong>of</strong> God’s creation,made in His image and likeness, man -kind was thus gi ven the great privilege<strong>of</strong> being stewards <strong>of</strong> God’s creation, en -trusted by Him with the awe some re -sponsibility <strong>of</strong> caring for, preservingand nurturing the earth and all thatGod had deemed ‘very good’ for all generations.Sad ly however, we know thatthrough his sinfulness, mankind timeand time again through out history hasneglected the sacred duty <strong>of</strong> responsiblestewardship over the earth and hasabused his privileged position inexchange for prestige, pr<strong>of</strong>it and personalgain, <strong>of</strong>ten desecrating and de -stroying God’s creation in the process.And so it was in Chornobyl. Theworld now knows that the nuclear ac -cident in Chornobyl, according to thefindings <strong>of</strong> the Nuclear Safety AdvisoryGroup, was entirely avoidable and canbe attributed to "…a deficient safetyculture, not only at the Chor nobylplant, but throughout the Soviet de -sign, operating and regulatory organi-Pastoral Messagezations… " It was the morally bank ruptand dehumanizing Com munist idealogy<strong>of</strong> the Soviet Union, and those thatwere unfortunate slaves to it, the systemthat placed the fulfillment <strong>of</strong> 5-yearplans before the good <strong>of</strong> the people,that are the true causes <strong>of</strong> the nu clearcatastrophe in Chor nobyl.From the distance <strong>of</strong> a quarter centurywe can see, despite the incalculabledeath and de struction caused byChornobyl, that some good has comefrom it as well. For one, the catastrophein Chornobyl proved to be, in so -me ways, the death knell <strong>of</strong> the So vietUnion. The explosion shook not onlythe nu clear power station, but thefound ation <strong>of</strong> the godless system thatbuilt it as well. The world came to realize,perhaps as never before, with whatutter duplicity and callous disregardthe Soviet leadership treated its citizens.It is no surprise that within a fewyears <strong>of</strong> Chor no byl the entire SovietEmpire had collapsed in ruins.In addition, over the years manypeople, <strong>Ukrainian</strong>s and non-Ukrain -ians alike, as well as organizations fromnations the world over have been unitedin their efforts to aid the victims <strong>of</strong>Chornobyl in whatever way they can,especially the innocent children. 4Пастирське Посланняn Двадцять п'ять років тому, рано вранці у суботу, 26 квітня 1986 року, жи -телі міста Прип'ять—великого міста та адміністративного центру роз та -шованого на річці з тим самим іменем, одне з багатьох приток верхньогопо бережжя могутнього Дніпра, на північ від Української столиці—Київ,пробудились від сну подією, яка змінить їхнє життя назавжди. Виникла ве -ликомасштабна з глобальними наслідками аварія, руйнівна сила якої пере -й шла кордони не лише міста, але й України, що навіть сьогодні, її можнавід чути.Рівно о 1:23 ранку за місцевим часом відбувся величезний вибух реак -тора №4 Чорнобильської Атомної Електространції, від чого тріснули стінита вийшов токсичний шлейф радіоактивних речовин, що у 400 раз більшеніж під час атомної бомби на Геросиму, високо в нічне небо. Хоча радян сь -ка влада спочатку намагалася зменшити загрозу атомної аварії і навіть за -пе речувала її виникнення, але великомасштабне лихо швидко далося просебе знати цілому світові, як токсична хмара що перейшла з України до Ро -сії, Білорусії і навіть до Скандинавії та Західної Європи.Економічні, природні, та людські втрати від атомної аварії цієї ночі уЧор нобилі справді були приголомшені. Багато людей, які жили в околиціелектростанції загинули зразу від цього вибуху. Набагато більше загинуливід хворіб спричинених радіацією. Інші захворіли на рак та різні захво рю -вання від надмірної радіації. Особливо потерпіли діти. За оцінками 25 ро -ків після катастрофи, більше 4000 дітей в Україні, Білорусії та Росії захво -рі ли на рак щитовидної залози. Їхня чисельність ще й досі зростає.Вибух та радіоактивне забруднення спричинило до евакуації та пере се -лення 350.000 людей, які жили у Чорнобилі та у ще 90 навколишніх насе ле -них пунктах. Чорнобильська зона відчуження—площа, діаметр якої стано -вить майже 40 миль навколо розірваної електростанції—не є здатна утри -му вати людські поселення і буде такою залишатись ще багато поколінь че -рез радіонукліди, які отруїли, колись багату та родючу землю.Пройшло чверть століття, а катастрофа у Чорнобилі залишається най -бі льшою та найбільш руйнівною атомною аварією у історії, та правдивоназвана як технологічна катастрофа 20-го століття.Згадуючи та роздумуючи над цими сумними фактами у день двад ця ти -п'ятиліття Чорнобильської Катастрофи, ми можемо лиш підняти наші сер цяу молитві до Всемогутнього Бога і просити за продовження Його бла годатіта милості, коли згадуємо тих, які потерпіли невимовну біль та втра ту.У цю сумну річницю, найперше хочемо згадати багато невинних чоло -віків, жінок та дітей, які загинули у цій катастрофі і ми молимось за упокійїхніх душ. Особливо ми згадуємо хоробрих та самовідданих пожежників,які після вибуху гасили полум'я та будували і клали саркофаг на зруйно ва -ний реактор, знаючи і сміливо йдучи на велику небезпеку і на можливусмер ть. Саме про цих людей Христос красномовно говорить коли про по -відував: "Ніхто більшої любові не має над ту, як хто свою душу поклав биза друзів своїх" (Ін. 15:13) Ми молимося, щоб Бог дарував їм вічний спокійу місті вічного світла, де немає ні болю, ні смутку, ні зітхання.Ми також згадуємо та молимося за тих, чиє здоров'я безповоротно по -ш кодилося завдяки радіації, що вийшла у цей день, і за тих які захворіли іпродовжують жити з хворобою до сьогоднішнього дня, і за їхні сім'ї, і затих, чиє життя було скорочене передчасною смертю. Ми особливо згаду є -мо дітей, котрі народилися після катастрофи, які сьогодні мучаться будучифізично та психічно хворими каліками через Чорнобиль. Ми також згаду -є мо і молимося за багато тисяч людей, які були змушені через шкідливу ра -діаційну хмару залишати свої домівки втрачаючи за собою назавжди все,що було для них знайомим і любимим: села, хати, поля і колгоспи, де вониі покоління перед ними народилися, жили, працювали і вмирали. Хай Богдарує всім, хто страждає Його мир, надію та утіху.А особливо, ми згадуємо і молимося за нашу улюблену батьківщину Ук -раїну: багату, щиру та рясну, але часто знехтувану, пограбовану та спа плю -жену століттями тими, хто над нею володіє.Ми читаємо у початкових рядках Святого Письма у Книзі Буття, що пі -сля створення Адама та Єви, Бог Отець благословив їх і доручив їм зем люі все, що Він створив на ній: "Плодіться і розмножуйтеся, і наповнюйтезем лю, оволодійте нею ... і над кожним плазуючим живим на землі" (Бут.1:28) "І побачив Бог усе, що вчинив. І ото,—вельми добре воно!" (Бут. 1:31)Як найвище Боже творіння, створене за образом та подобою Його, лю -ди ні було дано великий привілей, бути господарем Божого творіння, до -ручено Ним велику відповідальність дбати, оберігати та доглядати землю івсе, що Бог вважає "вельми добрим" на всі покоління. Але на жаль, ми зна -є мо, що через гріх, людство знову і знову під час всієї історії нехтувало обо -в'язком відповідального господаря і зловживало цим привілеєм зарадипрестижу, прибутку та особистої вигоди, часто осквернюючи та руйнуючиБоже творіння у цьому процесі.І так сталося у Чорнобилі. Цілий світ сьогодні знає, що атомну катас -тро фу у Чорнобилі, згідно дослідів Групи Атомної Безпеки, можна було за -побігти і причиною стала "... недостача культури безпеки, не тільки на Чор -но бильській станції, але у цілому Радянському Союзі в структурі, управ -лін ні та керуючих організаціях..." Взагалі, це було моральне банкрутство танелюдяна комуністична ідеологія Радянського Союзу, і тих, хто були її ра -ба ми, система, що постановила п'ятирічний план перед людьми, це єсправ жня причина атомної катастрофи у Чорнобилі.ВІСНИКтравень 2011Пастирське послання Української Католицької та УкраїнськоїПравославної Ієрархії Сполучених Штатів Америки та Канади25 років від Чорнобильської КатастрофиНа відстані четвертини століття ми можемо бачити, незважаючи на не -зліченні смерті та руїни спричинені Чорнобилем, і добру частину наслід -ків. З одного боку, Чорнобильська катастрофа виявилась, свого роду, похо -роном Радянського Союзу. Вибух потряс не тільки атомну електростанцію,але і основу безбожної системи, яка її побудувала. Світ побачив, чого не ба -чив до того, що з повним лукавством та черствою неповагою ставилось ра -дянське керівництво до своїх громадян. Тому і не дивно, що за декілька ро -ків після Чорнобиля ціла Радянська Імперія розпалася.З другого боку, за ті роки багато людей,—українці, а також не-українці,разом з організаціями з різних країн світу єдналися у своїх зусиллях допо -могти жертвам Чорнобиля хто чим може, особливо невинним дітям. Це тілюди, які живуть реальністю, де ми всі формуємо одне тіло Христове, яккаже св. Павло: "І коли терпить один член, терплять з ним усі члени..." (ІКор. 12:26) Ми згадуємо і молимося за них також, щоб Бог нагородив їх заїхні добрі серця та справи.На завершення, у сумну 25 річницю атомної катастрофи у Чорнобилі,помолимося до Пресвятої Богородиці, під покровом якої знаходиться Ук -ра їнська земля. From Pastoral LifeMy Lord and My God!THE HERALD<strong>May</strong> 2011We all learn from experience.Not just from our own experience,but from someoneelse’s experience as well.On Pascha Sunday, we saw how theRisen Lord first appeared to Mary Mag -dalene, and how she became an "eyewitnessnews reporter" for Jesus as she"went to the disciples with the news: "Ihave seen the Lord!"’ But, was Mary’s"eyewitness news alert’, her ex perience,enough to convince the disciples?Despite Mary’s "breaking news" <strong>of</strong>having seen the Risen Christ, it was notuntil "Jesus came and stood amongthem and said, ‘Peace be with you,"’and then showed them His hands andside, that the disciples believed the Re -surrection had taken place. Until then,they all had doubts, until they saw itfor themselves. In our religious culture,it is St. Thomas who gets the bad "rap"for his lack <strong>of</strong> faith and we refer to himas "Doubting Thomas." The fact is, be -ginning with Mary who stood outsidethe empty tomb telling the "gardener"(who was really Jesus) that someonehad stolen Christ’s body on down toevery single one <strong>of</strong> the other disciples…they had all doubted the Re sur -rection.In the Gospel lesson for St. ThomasSunday (John 20:19-31), the other discipleshad told Thomas that they hadseen the resurrected Lord. But stillTho mas replied, "Unless I see the nailmarks in his Hands where the nailswere and put my hand into his side, Iwill not believe it." A week passed andthe disciples were in the house againbut this time Thomas was with them.And though the doors were locked Je -sus came and stood among them andsaid, "Peace be with you!" Then He saidto Thomas, "Put your finger here; seemy hands. Reach out your hand andput it into my side. Stop doubting andbelieve."The doubt <strong>of</strong> Thomas is describedin the <strong>Church</strong> hymns as ‘blessed,’ for itwas not a doubt <strong>of</strong> resistance to truth,but one that desperately desired atruth ful answer—a "doubt which gavebirth to faith" when the answer wasrevealed. In the hymns <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Church</strong>,Christ says to Thomas, "Your doubtwill teach My Passion and Resurrec tionto all," and we affirm that his doubt"brought the hearts <strong>of</strong> believers toknowledge." The conversion <strong>of</strong> Tho -mas’ doubt into faith led him to theclearest confession <strong>of</strong> Christ’s divinity,addressing Jesus as "my Lord and myGod" (v.28). Але чи ві -стка про цю подію, очевидцем якоїбула "Марія" була потрясаючою, чибув її досвід достатній для того, щобпереконати учнів у достовірності?Незважаючи на Маріїну потря са -ючу "новину", що вона бачила Вос -креслого Христа, ця вістка фак тич -но спочатку не була сприйнята, ажтільки коли Ісус прийшов, і став по -серед них і сказав: "Мир вам", а по -тім показав їм руки Свої і бік, ті -льки тоді учні повірили, що Вос -кресіння справді мало місце. До то -го часу поки не побачили самі, вонивсі сумнівалися. У нашому релігій -но му переданні, це є св. Фома, якийотримує погану "репутацію" за свійбрак віри і тому ми називаємо його"Невірний Фома". Справа в тому,що починаючи від Марії, котра сто -яла біля порожнього гробу, кажучи"садівникові" (Котрим насправдібув Ісус), що хтось вкрав тіло Хри -ста і так аж до кожного з інших уч -нів ... вони всі мали сумніви щодоВос кре сіння.В Євангельській науці на Фоми нунеділю (Ів. 20:19-31), говориться,що інші учні розказали Фомі, щовони бачили Воскреслого Господа.Але Фома все одно не повірив, вінвідповів: "Коли на руках Його знакувід цвяшного я не побачу, і пальцясвого не вкладу до відцвяшної раниі своєї руки не вкладу до боку Його,—не ввірую". Минув тиждень, і учнібули в будинку знову, але цього разуФома з ними був. І хоч двері булизам кнені, прийшов Ісус і став посе -ред них і сказав: "Мир вам!" Потімка же Фомі: "Простягни свій палецьсюди, та на руки Мої подивись.Про стягни й свою руку, і вклади добоку Мого. І не будь ти невіруючий,але віруючий".Сумнів Фоми, описаний в цер -ков них піснеспівах як "благосло вен -ня", бо це був не сумнів супроти іс -ти ни, а такий сумнів, на який вінбільше за все на світі бажав дістатиправдиву відповідь—"сумнів, якийпо родив віру", коли відповідь булавідкрита. У піснях Церкви, Христоскаже Фомі: "Твій сумнів буде нав ча -ти всіх про Мої Страсті і Воскре сін -ня", і ми підтверджуємо, що цей йо -го сумнів "привів серця віруючих дознання". Перетворення сумніву Фо -ми у віру привело його до щирогови знання Божественності Христа,для нього Ісус був тільки, як "Госпо -дь мій і Бог мій", (Ів. 20:28)Хіба ми, до якоїсь міри не такісамі як той невірний Фома, чи якМарія або як Петро, аж коли Вос -креслий Христос, Своїм дивовиж -ним життям, не входить в нашежит тя і не називає наше ім'я: "Гали -но, Петре, Тиміше, Тарасе, Анно...Мир вам!... Не будьте невіруючими,але віруючими?" Я ніколи не мавпідстав сумніватися в тому, що мо -же мені не сказали правду. Але вірамоя не завжди була "живою", ска жі -мо, аж поки Воскреслий Христос непоказав Себе мені. Це сталося, ко лимій приятель (нині він також свя -ще ник) попросив мене по го во ри тиз ним про значення Ісу са в мо ємужитті. Не про те, хто Він, як це зна -ходимо в Св. Письмі, але хто Він умоєму серці. Тільки після цієї роз -мови Св. Письмо ожило і набра лоособистого значення. Тіль ки тодірозвіялися мої хмари і пере твори -лися на яскраве сонячне світ ло. Ті -льки тоді я відчув, що я міг би стати"свідком кореспондентом" для Хри -ста—кажучи іншим—"Я ба чив Гос -пода!" Правду кажучи я не завждивпевнений, коли йдеться про деякіречі, але життя стає кра щим, чимдов ше я практикую свою віру—зтвердим наміром вірити—все біль -ше і більше виходячи з тем рявисум ніву і невірування і вступа ючи усвітло віри. За допомогою об мінудосвідом своєї віри, я зміг 'по ба чи -ти' Христа і нарешті всім сер цемпо вірити.Ми прийшли до віри тому, щовсе лився в нас Дух Святий, який від -крився нам через Св. Письмо і до -свід Церкви. Завдяки цьому дос віду,ми поливаємо в собі насіння ві ри. Throughsharing his faith experience, I was ableto ‘see’ Christ and finally believe withall my heart.We are brought to faith through theindwelling <strong>of</strong> the Holy Spirit revealedto us through the Scriptures and theex perience <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Church</strong>. Throughthe se experiences, we water the seed <strong>of</strong>faith within us. Then imagine the possibilitiesin sharing this faith to create aworld that chooses love over hate, salvationover sin and death, heaven overhell, good over evil, service over beingserved, humility over pride, peace overwar, and light over darkness. A worldthat loves unconditionally; a worldwhe re peace reigns; a world where thehungry are fed; a world where goodnews is preached to the poor and thecaptives are set free. A world whereChrist’s Resurrection has vanquishedany need to fear death for we possess anew confidence and conviction be -cause our heart has come to the trueknowledge <strong>of</strong> Christ’s Resurrection.What a reason to rejoice! What areason to live! What a reason to sharethe most precious thing in the world—our faith—with everyone we meetboth through our actions and by ourwords! Christ is Risen! 6“The coat is warm, but it’s not cut to our size...”Ihave just listened to an interviewon the CBC with the writer AndreDubus III from Boston. Somethinghe said lingered with me. He wasdescribing his youth, in which he ex -pressed his anger at the hard times heand his family were experiencing byfighting. His violence was mainly di -rected at bullies—who were biggerthan he was. Nonetheless, he says <strong>of</strong> itthat it produced in him "a hangover <strong>of</strong>the spirit, as if all those punches andkicks had pushed you into a gray andtreeless landscape where love and forgivenesswere hard to find."I identified with M. Dubus, not be -cause I experienced much violence inthe quiet Northern Alberta community<strong>of</strong> my youth (there was practicallynone), but because <strong>of</strong> my perspectiveon the history <strong>of</strong> my ancestral homeland,Ukraine. Throughout its morethan a thousand years <strong>of</strong> history, thepeople <strong>of</strong> Ukraine have only brieflyand sporadically experienced the kind<strong>of</strong> freedom that my parents providedfor me by immigrating to <strong>Canada</strong>, withits tradition <strong>of</strong> democracy and, notmerely tolerance, but actual nurturing<strong>of</strong>, the distinctness <strong>of</strong> the many differentpeoples who are its citizens. He thusprovides an important message—particularlyrelevant to our times withthe ir vast potential for the increasinglydeadly escalation <strong>of</strong> violence and thein creasingly manifest message thatinjustice and oppression inevitablypro duce it.Clearly many political leaders havenot yet assimilated this sort <strong>of</strong> message.Alas, one wonders if some <strong>of</strong> ourcontemporary distinguished spiritualleaders have done so. Violence against,and oppression <strong>of</strong>, the spirit are certainlyjust as—if not even more—ca -pable <strong>of</strong> producing the sort <strong>of</strong> hangoverM. Dubus has noted.This comes to mind when one readsabout the propagation <strong>of</strong> the theory <strong>of</strong>the "Russian world". According to thistheory the people <strong>of</strong> Russia, Ukraineand Belarus (and even Moldova andKazakhstan) are one nation, in fact thecontinuation <strong>of</strong> Holy Rus’. Therefore,the argument goes, Ukraine and Bela -rus do not need their own distinct loc -al <strong>Church</strong>, especially not one headedby their own Patriarchs, since there isalready one Patriarch for this entireRus sian world, located in Moscow.There are even hints that he might notbe averse to having his headquarters(or perhaps an alternative one) locatedin Kyiv.It does not take much imaginationto hear in this message the voice <strong>of</strong> apolitical empire which is desperatelyseeking to hang on to its domination<strong>of</strong> peoples and nations, even though(paraphrased from Shevchenko’s poem, ‘Haidamaky’)“Теплий кожух, тільки – не на нас шитий...”Ятільки що на радіостанціїСВС прослухав інтерв'ю з пи -сьменником Андре Дюбус III зБостону. Тимне менше, він говорить, що це спри -яло витворенню в ньо му "похміллядуху, так ніби всі ці удари руками іногами штовхали вас у сі рий і без -лісний ландшафт, де було дуже важ -ко знайти любов і про щен ня".Щодо мене, то я розділяв перс -пек тиву пана Дю буса, не тому, щоза знав багато на сильства в оточенніспокійної спі ль ноти північної Аль -берти, де про йшла моя юність (тамчогось подіб ного практично не бу -ло), а з уваги на мою точку зо ру що -до іс то рії моєї історичної ба тьків -щини України. Протягом усієї своєїбільш ніж тисячолітньої істо рії, на -род Ук раїни лише на дуже ко роткийчас—і то спорадично—відчував та -ку сво боду, яку мої батьки змоглида ти ме ні завдяки імміграції до Ка -нади з її традиціями демократії, і непро с то терпимості, а правдивогопле кан ня виразності багатьох різно -ма нітних на родів, які є її грома дя на -ми. Укра їн ці на своїй землі булизму шені бо ротися проти тиранів ігно бителів—терпляче переноситивсе з вірою і надією, що вороги водин пре кра сний день зникнуть "якроса на сон ці", як це співається угімні Ук ра їни.Зростаюче усвідомлення духов -но го похмілля, викликаного наси ль -ством, призвело М. Дюбуса до зре -чення від цього, і він вже, протягомостанніх 23 ро ків ані когісенько невдарив. Its imperialism, how -ever, with its messianic overtones, isnot admirable. The culture with whichI identity most closely, that <strong>of</strong> my Uk -rain ian ancestors, is a culture fromwhich, for historical reasons, messianicimperialism is mostly ab sent.I also admire and rejoice in the culture<strong>of</strong> the English, the Irish, the Scots,the French, the Italians, and oh so very,very many others, without affirmingthe imperialistic and violent episodeswhich admittedly are to be found inthem, as well. The Holy Spirit does in -deed work together with God’s marvelouslydiverse human children toma nifest beauty, grace and truth everywhere.These virtues flourish whenpeople are free to develop them, and tocreate and share their own distinct—and equally valuable—cultural treasures.Coercion, tyrannical indoctrinationand manipulation produce re -sentful slaves, not loving and generousneighbours.Alas, however good the intentions<strong>of</strong> the promoters <strong>of</strong> the "Russianworld" theory may be, their words re -mind some folks <strong>of</strong> the passionatepraises <strong>of</strong> the emerging, triumphant"Aryan race", which heralded so muchtragedy in the past century. There was also a heroicminority, which—just possibly—mayhave best represented the tragicallysilent majority. Others have said that the growth<strong>of</strong> the Muslim population in Russia,coupled with the decline in <strong>Church</strong> at -tendance on the part <strong>of</strong> Russian Or -thodox, make Ukraine particularly im -portant as a bastion for stemming thedecline <strong>of</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> Russia itself.None <strong>of</strong> these interpretations willultimately prevent the "spiritual hangover"<strong>of</strong> which Andre Dubus III speaks.Those who do violence—spiritual aswell as physical—have a price to pay. Itis to live, and to bring others with themto live, in that "gray and treeless landscapewhere love and forgiveness [are]hard to find". Until we find our wayout—through repentance.The Great Fast has just <strong>of</strong>fered usanother opportunity to come out <strong>of</strong>that sad landscape—to be the <strong>Church</strong>,that is a people called out <strong>of</strong> darknessinto God’s marvelous light (I Peter2:9). We would do well to always re -mem ber that the Greek work for"<strong>Church</strong>" is "ekklesia", i. e. a community"called-out" <strong>of</strong> the world, called torenounce the worldly logic <strong>of</strong> violenceand coercion and manifest the divinelogic <strong>of</strong> love. THE HERALD<strong>May</strong> 2011A column for high school and university studentsOver the past several years, in conversationswith the editors <strong>of</strong> theVisnyk, the idea <strong>of</strong> a column forhigh school and university studentshas occasionally been proposed.You - the "young adult demographic"—are important to the <strong>Church</strong>. Not onlythat, but whether you realize it or notthe Christian Faith is important to you—probably more important than yourealize. I’ve <strong>of</strong>ten asked myself: "If I wasa teenager or university student, and theVisnyk arrived at my house, would therebe anything in it to interest me?"Hopefully this column will.I’ve been directly involved withyouth ministry and education duringmost <strong>of</strong> my adult life. One <strong>of</strong> the highpoints <strong>of</strong> my summer is going to AllSaints’ <strong>Ukrainian</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> camp inEm lenton, Pennsylvania to spend timewith the teenagers there. Every day, afterbreakfast and again after dinner, wehave an hour to talk about spiritualmat ters. The campers put questions in abox, and we pull them out and answerthem as well as we can. I’d like to workthis column the same way, as a conversation,not a lecture.The contemporary world can be acomplicated and intimidating place.Besides the technological complexity <strong>of</strong>our society there is a social and moralcomplexity which is even more overwhelming.It’s no exaggeration to saythat the current state <strong>of</strong> affairs regardingmany moral, ethical, religious andspi ritual issues would have been un -thinkable even 50 years ago.Growing up in such a world it’s easyto lose one’s way, and it’s always easyjust to "go with the flow". But just like itwas for Christians in the Roman Em -pire, under the Moslems, or in the So -viet Union, it’s necessary for true Chris -tians today to be knowledgeable abouttheir faith and dedicated to the <strong>Church</strong>.I recently heard a talk given by Me -tropolitan Kallistos (Ware). Duringques tion period a woman asked himwhat we could do to keep our youth inthe <strong>Church</strong>. He replied by saying thatwhenever he speaks with the youth <strong>of</strong>his parish in Oxford he reminds themthat in our contemporary world if theywant to remain <strong>Orthodox</strong> Christiansthey need to be prepared to be like asalmon, swimming constantly againstthe current. It’s not impossible for people,even young people, even universitystudents, to remain committed believing<strong>Orthodox</strong> Christians, but it is definitelya countercultural act, and thosewho wish to remain with the <strong>Church</strong>will have to be prepared to deal in asound intellectual, spiritual and lovingmanner with the questions, derision,and outright aggression which they willcertainly face.Due to the emphasis "the world"puts on career success and "personalfulfillment" most <strong>of</strong> our teens andyoung adults, even those who are closeto the <strong>Church</strong>, find themselves in a constanttug <strong>of</strong> war among many activities—sports, music lessons, dance classes,school work, part-time jobs, socialactivities, etc. Notice we haven’t evenmentioned worship services, parishyouth group activities, or prayer! Basedon my observation, Christ and the<strong>Church</strong> usually seem to find themselvesat the bottom <strong>of</strong> the priority list. This isboth sad and unfortunate, because it’sprecisely at the beginning <strong>of</strong> the teenyears and continuing through the earlytwenties that as human beings we areable to start philosophically engagingthe deeper realities <strong>of</strong> life, the world,and the Christian faith.While we’re blessed to live in an age<strong>of</strong> rapid technological advancement,we’re at the same time witnessing afrightening drop in the level <strong>of</strong> spiritualknowledge. This is dangerous for society,as economic or scientific progresswhich is not tempered by wisdom andlove for the people and things this pro -gress affects is <strong>of</strong>ten catastrophic. It isdangerous for all <strong>of</strong> us individually aswell, since if we aren’t spiritually and in -tellectually engaged with our faith we’resitting ducks when the next cultist, secularhumanist, or "evangelist" wants tohave fun with us.Speaking <strong>of</strong> "evangelists", we mustadmit that part <strong>of</strong> the reason "Chris t -ians" are <strong>of</strong>ten made fun <strong>of</strong> is because <strong>of</strong>the way certain "Christians" act andspeak. Watching some <strong>of</strong> the questionablecharacters that claim to preach theGospel on television or listening towhat most <strong>of</strong> them preach would makeany normally intelligent person with aneven minimal understanding <strong>of</strong> theGospel <strong>of</strong> Christ be suspicious. These"evangelists" <strong>of</strong>ten prey on the generalpublic’s ignorance <strong>of</strong> authentic Chris -tian teaching and practice, as well astheir base human instincts (greed, jealousy,fear, the need for affirmation, etc.)to line their own pockets. Which is allthe more reason to know our faith well,so that we don’t get sucked in by thesecharlatans or lumped together withthem as "crackpot Christians".In addition to the above, it takes peoplelonger to grow up nowadays. Fifty ora hundred years ago people <strong>of</strong>ten gotmarried in their late teens or earlytwenties. The spiritual, psychologicaland practical lessons that were learnedby our grandparents simply by virtue <strong>of</strong>going to <strong>Church</strong> every Sunday, having aspouse and children to look after, andtaking an active part in the ongoing life<strong>of</strong> the community are not being learn -ed, or learned late in life, by a large segment<strong>of</strong> our population today, to thedetriment <strong>of</strong> society, the <strong>Church</strong>, andus, individual people.Hopefully this column will help youcontextualize a lot <strong>of</strong> the informationyou may have been fed through the7mass media, school, or even in <strong>Church</strong>.Based on my pastoral experience I’vegot a list <strong>of</strong> things I’d like to write about,issues like honour and honesty; relationshipissues (friendship, dating,court ing, marriage); sexual morality(sex ual activity, homosexuality, pornography,the <strong>Church</strong>’s vision <strong>of</strong> humansexual activity); addiction issues (alcohol,internet, drugs, gambling); familyissues (relationship with parents, siblings,etc.); relationship to <strong>Church</strong> (do Ifeel uncomfortable or unwelcome in<strong>Church</strong>? Why should I even belong to a<strong>Church</strong>?); theological issues (Who isJesus Christ? Bodily resurrection andthe resurrection <strong>of</strong> Christ. What aboutnon-Christians or non-<strong>Orthodox</strong>?); per -sonal spirituality (prayer, fasting, worship,service), etc.But as I said, I don’t want this columnto be a one-way street. In themeantime, be good, say your prayers, goto church, and we’ll talk again nextmonth.Notes from Camp: from a sister camp program in the USAEvery summer the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Or -thodox <strong>Church</strong> <strong>of</strong> the USA sponsorsa camping program for te -en agers called "Teenage Con fe -ren ce" at All Saints camp in Emlenton,Pennsylvania. I’ve been blessed to takepart in the program for many years,teaching religion and singing. It’s anexceptional program, bringing greatspiritual benefit to everyone involved.The program is centred on God andHis <strong>Church</strong>. Days begin and end withcommon prayer in the beautiful Car -pathian-style wooden church. Mealslikewise begin and end with prayer.Liturgy is served on Sundays and feastdays, with other services such as Ves -pers, Akathists, and Molebens <strong>of</strong> feredat appropriate times. These services arevery uplifting, as the teenagers sing theservices themselves, and sing themwell.Every day following breakfast andsupper the campers gather for a questionand answer session with thepriests. All the difficult issues whichim pact our youth—issues <strong>of</strong> morality,sexuality, theology, Christian living,etc.—are addressed. I always returnhome thinking that if our adult parishionersor council members were aseager to openly wrestle with the teachings<strong>of</strong> our church as these teenagersNew Column: Against the Currentare our parishes would be veritablehot houses <strong>of</strong> Christian faith and practice!The encampment also featuressports, culture, music, and social activities.Every year the campers are dividedinto teams <strong>of</strong> 8-10 and participatein the "Ukie Olympics", which featuresevents like running, throwing, basketball,volleyball, etc. Of special note isthe diving competition, judged personallyby Metropolitan Constantine.The team accumulating the mostpoints over the two week encampmentwins the coveted "Kozak Cup". Besidesorganized sports campers have timefor free sports like swimming, soccer,basketball, tennis—you name it, thecamp has facilities for it.Singing is very popular. It’s amazingto have 50 or 60 teenagers singing bothpopular and folk songs in either Uk -rainian or English joyfully and at thetop <strong>of</strong> their lungs. The camp is locatedon the banks <strong>of</strong> the Allegheny river,and it’s traditional to go down and singby the riverside on the grass at leastonce during the encampment.This past year the campers—mostly<strong>Ukrainian</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> but with a significantminority who are not <strong>Ukrainian</strong>,not <strong>Orthodox</strong>, or neither—learnedabout various aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ukrainian</strong>culture, including Christmas, Newyear,Theophany, and wedding customs.In the past whole encampmentshave been dedicated to one or another<strong>of</strong> these themes, including full blowncelebrations <strong>of</strong> Christmas Eve (withthe Holy Supper and caroling for theneighbours who have cottages downthe road from the camp), and a complete<strong>Ukrainian</strong> wedding, including abanquet and dance!Chapel prayers.ПротоієрейБогдан ГладьоУПЦ Св. 8Camp Veselka 2010It was yet another hot summer inGim li, Manitoba, where childrenfrom the ages <strong>of</strong> 5 to 14 frolicked inthe sunshine. Whether it’s the sport/outdoor activities or arts and crafts, orthe connections and bonds the camp -ers create with their cabins and councillors,there’s something about CampVeselka that makes kids come backyear after year. This summer, Camp Ve -sel ka’s theme was Nature! The camperslearned everything about nature: fromhow to navigate using a compass—tolearning about animals, geography, andthe four seasons in <strong>Ukrainian</strong>.After the first evening <strong>of</strong> getting toknow each other, the campers settledinto a comfortable routine. They werewoken by a 7:30 am bell, participatedin fun morning physical exercises, andthen filed into Camp Veselka’s chapelfor Morning Prayers. After prayers, adelicious breakfast fuelled the campersfor a day <strong>of</strong> learning. They attendedses sions such as Religion Class, Culin -ary Arts, Arts and Crafts, <strong>Ukrainian</strong>Language (Nature themed), <strong>Ukrainian</strong>Dancing, Singing, and Sports. In theevening, the councillors and I ledSummer Campsfriendly competitions such as Capturethe Flag, a Nature Themed ScavengerHunt, and ‘Survivor.’ Other eveningact ivities included ‘Zabavas’ (dances)with the themes <strong>of</strong> ‘The MasqueradeSnowball’ and ‘Spring Fling’! Movienights, campfires, skit nights, and talentshows filled the rest <strong>of</strong> theevenings.The campers enjoyed learning newskills with our special guests. We hadScouts <strong>Canada</strong> come in to teach thechildren about maps, compasses, directions,and basic navigation skills. Also,we had a special guest come in to teacharchery! Special guests came in to doculinary arts with the campers—thechildren made home-made noodles andkolach (<strong>Ukrainian</strong> bread). The campersalso enjoyed a special visit from BishopAndriy who taught them more aboutthe <strong>Ukrainian</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> Faith. CampVeselka had such a variety in activities,thank you to all the volunteers and specialguests that made the campers’ experiencesunique this summer!Even though everyone dreaded it,all good things come to an end. Thetwo week session ended <strong>of</strong>f with anentertaining concert—including Uk -rain ian poems, a kolomeyka, and a few‘Four Seasons’ themed skits. We also hadshort term OCMC missionaries givepre sentations about their work and ex -periences spreading the Gospel overseas.Besides the long and short-termmissionaries sponsored through OC -MC, the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> <strong>Church</strong><strong>of</strong> the USA sponsors missionary tripsfor young adults to Ukraine, and forhigh school students in the USA and<strong>Canada</strong>. Campers who had taken partin these mission trips gave very movingpresentations about their trips tohelp out at <strong>Church</strong> sponsored orphanagesin Ukraine as well as <strong>Orthodox</strong>mis sions in the USA and <strong>Canada</strong>.Parishioners <strong>of</strong>ten ask "what can wedo to increase church membership?"As a special "hands on" project thisyear the campers prepared a missionoutreach program. An open house,which included a performance <strong>of</strong> Or -thodox liturgical music, presentationsby the youth, a question and answersession with our clergy, and a fellowshipreception afterwards was hosted atSs. Peter and Paul <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Or tho dox<strong>Church</strong> in nearby Lyndora, Penn syl -vania. The campers prepared and distributedflyers, greeted the guests, sangliturgical hymns, and even preparedfood for the reception afterwards! Indoing so the teenagers re ceived theknowledge and practical ex periencewhich permitted them to re turn homecapable <strong>of</strong> organizing such events intheir home parishes.The success <strong>of</strong> any endeavour de -pends primarily on the people in -volved. Natalie Kapeluck, Director <strong>of</strong>youth ministry for the UOC <strong>of</strong> theUSA, does a phenomenal job as campdirector. Fr. John Harvey has been thebeloved spiritual director for 30 years.The counselors and camp staff aremostly young adults who have gonethrough the camp program themselvesand return year after year.A high point <strong>of</strong> every encampmentis the visit <strong>of</strong> the bishops. Victor in form ed thePresidium that he continues to coordinateinterim mission services for someparishes and districts around Win -nipeg.It was reported that Keith Swintonhas conducted interviews with the staffat the Consistory <strong>of</strong>fice regarding theoperations <strong>of</strong> the Consistory Office.The Presidium called for a preliminaryreport for the March Meeting.Henry Kuzia reported that he is nowing the upcoming Vydubychi ChoirTour (April 27th to <strong>May</strong> 21st, 2011).All is proceeding well and informationwill be shared, as it is made available.The Presidium heard a report on thestatus <strong>of</strong> the upcoming Full ConsistoryBoard Meeting (end <strong>of</strong> <strong>May</strong>) and de -cided on the venue. Re garding the Ot -tawa Taras Shevchenko MonumentPro ject, a letter <strong>of</strong> appeal would be preparedand sent out to the congregations<strong>of</strong> the UOCC from the Council<strong>of</strong> Bishops, urging support <strong>of</strong> this mostworthwhile project. Inform ation canbe found on the UOCC Web site.The Presidium then heard commentsfrom the Council <strong>of</strong> Bishops.Metropol itan Yurij stated the extraordinaryEastern Eparchial Assembly,held on March 19th, 2011 to discussthe matter <strong>of</strong> the Eastern Eparchy Bi -shop’s title, was very positive. Part icip -ants in the meeting came with the goal<strong>of</strong> seeking a resolution. The informationgathered from this meeting will bepre sented to the Full Con sistory Boardfor further direction.Metropolitan Yurij then stated thatthe <strong>Orthodox</strong>/Catholic Dialogue (March15th-16th) discussed topics <strong>of</strong> mutualinterest especially in the areas <strong>of</strong> interfaithrelations with non-Chris tians.Following this dialogue, Metro politanYurij and Bishop Andriy participatedin the <strong>Orthodox</strong> Bi shops <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>Dialogue (March 17th). He stated thatthe matter <strong>of</strong> naming the CanadianAssembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> Bi shops is stillnot decided. Other topics <strong>of</strong> discussionwere: reception <strong>of</strong> converts, cremation,and creating a na tion al registry <strong>of</strong> ca -nonical clergy and churches and mon -asteries in <strong>Canada</strong>.In his report, Fr. Victor discussed thestatus <strong>of</strong> various parish and clergymat ters that have been brought to theattention <strong>of</strong> his <strong>of</strong>fice. These mattersare ongoing. He stated that the deadlinefor transfer requests has passedand he will prepare a dossier for theВІСНИКтравень 2011proceeding with the completion <strong>of</strong> theAn nual Audit for 2010. He is trainingstaff in the finance department withregards to new duties that are now as -signed. He stated that a concerted ef -fort would be made to address Ac -counts Receivables. He noted that thereare computer upgrades to be made. Heis also looking into various governmentalprograms for summer staffing,building upgrades and funding.Fr. Gene Maximiuk reported that allis progressing within normal parametersre garding his departments. Theprayer book publishing is awaitingfinal approval by bishops and committees.A new column in Visnyk will be -gin in <strong>May</strong>, geared for Young Adults.He also reported that once the prayerbooks are sent to print, he would be -gin the process <strong>of</strong> publishing volumes5 and 6 <strong>of</strong> the History <strong>of</strong> the UOCC.Under new business, various lettersre ceived from clergy and parishes, representingmatters <strong>of</strong> concern, werebrought forward with the Presidiumresolving the mat ters or deciding t<strong>of</strong>urther investigate them. Due to theprivate and sensitive na ture <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong>these issues, detailed information cannotbe released.The Meeting adjourned with theblessing <strong>of</strong> Metropolitan Yurij.—Office <strong>of</strong> CommunicationsCouncil <strong>of</strong> Bishops to begin addressingthe matters. He further stated that discussionwill have to take place re -garding realignments <strong>of</strong> parish boundariesin conjunction with the clergyassignments. Fr. Victor then indicatedthat the ap plicants for the job <strong>of</strong> Editor<strong>of</strong> Visnyk will be forwarded to theConsistory Board for their review.Henry Kuzia presented a financialstatement for the 5 months ended Feb -ruary 28th, 2011. <strong>Church</strong> Goods show -ed a loss for the period, but is movingtowards a pr<strong>of</strong>it situation. Customerservice is im proving and the Store willbe opening on Saturday’s from 9:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Ec clesia Publishingcon tinues to operate within its targetre garding the budget. The Office <strong>of</strong> theConsistory Levy revenue is coming insteadily. General donations are downbut this may be attributed to last year’sSobor activity. The consolidated financialstatement showed that the Con -sistory is in a positive financial position.Mr. Kuzia stated that the AnnualAudit is in its final stages <strong>of</strong> completion.The Pres id ium reviewed the processfor reviewing the Annual Finan -cial Audit.Fr. Hespoke <strong>of</strong> the many times they haveworked together on various projects ashierarchs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Church</strong> and the manytimes that Archbishop Antony hastaken part in the life <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Church</strong> in<strong>Canada</strong>. Bishop Andriy greeted in be -half <strong>of</strong> all the Canadian hierarchs—including Bishop Ilarion, who was un -able to attend the celebration—andpre sented the Archbishop with a beautifulicon <strong>of</strong> St. Antony the Great forutilization in his liturgical and prayerlife.Archbishop Antony spoke <strong>of</strong> thegreat mystery <strong>of</strong> events that took place25 years ago – on October 6, 1985—when he knelt down before the altar <strong>of</strong>St. Andrew Memorial <strong>Church</strong> in SouthBound Brook and was gifted with thereality <strong>of</strong> the Grace <strong>of</strong> God, whichwould fulfill that which was lacking inhim and strengthen him along the en -tire path <strong>of</strong> his episcopal ministry. Hespoke <strong>of</strong> the struggle for all bishopsand for any rank <strong>of</strong> the priesthood toremember at all times that they areministers <strong>of</strong> Christ—to His <strong>Church</strong>and to His people. The bishop cannotadd anything to the Good News or <strong>of</strong> -fer any salvation on his own. He canonly assist those entrusted to his spiritualcare in growing in their faith andfollowing the narrow path, which leadsto God’s Heavenly Kingdom.The Archbishop <strong>of</strong>fered special andemotional words <strong>of</strong> gratitude to manypeople for their influence on his life.He presented a bouquet <strong>of</strong> flowers tohis mother Dorothy, who was overcomewith emotion at the long-standingovation given to her by the entiregathering. 12(continued from the March issue)n From the very early beginnings <strong>of</strong>the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Women’s Association <strong>of</strong><strong>Canada</strong>, they saw the importance andnecessity <strong>of</strong> a women’s press. In factthis idea was brought up at the foundingconvention in 1926. The CentralExecutive <strong>of</strong> the Association approach -ed the directors <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Voice,and the "Zhinochiy Kutok", or "Wo men’sCorner was born. The articles be gan ap -pearing early in 1927, and last ed justunder half a year. Later in 1927, with thedecision <strong>of</strong> the Editorial Committee, thename "Women’s Cor ner" was changedto the "<strong>Ukrainian</strong> Wo men’s Association<strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> Sec tion".In 1927 and 1928, it occupied asmall section <strong>of</strong> the page, about two orthree columns, but by 1929 it had ex -panded to a full page. A variety <strong>of</strong> topicswere featured—speeches deliveredat conventions, as well as guidelines forpublic activity, and as always, remind -ers <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Ukrainian</strong> woman’s responsibilitiesand obligations to the communityand her family.In 1930, they began publishing an -nual reports <strong>of</strong> the local branches, conventionreports, and articles on theeducation and upbringing <strong>of</strong> children.Later on, a wider scope <strong>of</strong> topics wereprinted, some <strong>of</strong> which included contemporarydevelopment and events;travel reports; biographical sketches;home economics; and studies <strong>of</strong> FolkArts. A column titled "Around theHearth", where readers from acrossCa nada could express themselves onvarious issues was also introduced.In 1934, the Central Executive wastransferred to Winnipeg, and NataliaKohuska assumed the editorial responsibilities.In 1948, the UWAC Sectionwas again renamed, and became the"UWAC Page"—"Storinka Soyuzu Uk -ra i nok Kanady".The UWAC Page had great significanceand was important for promotingthe principles <strong>of</strong> the UWAC, andn March 25, 2011—Toronto, Ontario:On Thursday March 24th, MPPs in theOntario Legislature voted unanimouslyin support <strong>of</strong> Bill-155 the <strong>Ukrainian</strong>Heritage Day Act. <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Canadiancommunity leaders from across Onta -rio observed the debate and vote fromthe gallery <strong>of</strong> the legislature.The <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Heritage Day Act pro -claims September 7th <strong>of</strong> each year Uk -rainian Heritage Day in the prov ince <strong>of</strong>Ontario. Thishelped to promote unity, build a strongfoundation for the organization, andguarantee its growth.The UWAC was supportive <strong>of</strong> Tri -dent Press, which published the Uk -rainian Voice. The value and goodwill<strong>of</strong> this company was recognized, andthe Association showed their gratitudeby giving a great deal <strong>of</strong> financial support,and help with getting new subscribers.In 1959, the Association decidedthat it was time they had a publication<strong>of</strong> their own, and the last UWAC Pagein the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Voice was printed inDecember <strong>of</strong> that year. The Journal,"Promin" was inaugurated in 1960,and is still being published today. Theyear 2010 was a banner year for Pro -min, with the celebration <strong>of</strong> the 50thAnni versary <strong>of</strong> the Journal.Throughout the fifty years, Prominhas undergone certain changes, whichare necessary in any publication due tochanging times. Perhaps the greatestchange is the use <strong>of</strong> the English languagein approximately fifty percent <strong>of</strong>the content. Also, with the coming <strong>of</strong>new technology, more and better qualityphotos are included.We believe that the Journal wouldserve us more completely if there weremore reports <strong>of</strong> branch activities, newsitems and photos from the membersand branches, articles and reports fromthe conveners and news from the Pro -vinces. Soyuzanky, this is our Jour n al,to be used as our tool for communicating.It has not really been used by us forthat purpose. Let us resolve to be ginthese next 50 years with more submissionsfrom all <strong>of</strong> us. I believe that thiswould make the Journal more meaningfulto each <strong>of</strong> us by creating a "personaltouch".In addition to serving the UOCCand the communities in various ways,the UWAC has always been involved inhumanitarian work. A classic exampleis their work during World War Two.In 1939, at the onset <strong>of</strong> this war, thepeople <strong>of</strong> all the democratic countrieswere preparing to do their duty, and todefend their country. Projects were initiatedby government agencies, as wellas charitable institutions such as theRed Cross. The UWAC was involved inassisting <strong>Canada</strong> in the war effort rightfrom the start <strong>of</strong> the war.In September, 1939, the UWAC Na -tional President sent out a circular toall branches, informing them abouttheir wartime program. In part this cir -cular stated:"What part should women play inthis war? As free and equal citizens weshould also perform our duty in keepingwith our strength. A campaign tocollect funds for the Red Cross willsoon be announced. All <strong>of</strong> our branchesshould participate in this campaign.All <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> will be divided intocom mittees; provincial and municipaldistricts. Women’s committees to conductwork on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Red Crosswill be organized. At the next meetingevery branch <strong>of</strong> the Association shoulddelegate a representative to the districtcommittee and work in accord withthis committee............"The branches <strong>of</strong> the UWAC an swer -ed this call and at first they participatedin common projects with other org -anizations. However, because all theirwork was attributed to the populationin general, in time, Associa tion bran -ches, especially those in larger communities,began organizing their own separatecommittees for the war time ef -fort. They raised funds and trans -mitted them directly to the Red Cross.Other examples <strong>of</strong> help given were, in1940 the UWAC Nation al Ex ecutiveestablished a War Fund, collecting mo -ney to purchase a Mili tary Am bulancefor the Dept. <strong>of</strong> Na tional De fence. Alsoin 1940, the As sociation initiated thepractice <strong>of</strong> mailing parcels to servicemenstationed overseas. The branchesreadily participated in this, and parcelswere mailed out regularly.In 1945, just prior to the end <strong>of</strong> thewar, the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Canadian Commit -tee created the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> CanadianRelief Fund, which was established toaid the victims <strong>of</strong> war in Europe.Again, the UWAC stepped up and contributedto this need. After the end <strong>of</strong>the war there were thousands <strong>of</strong> Uk -rain ians in Concentration Camps inother European countries. Many <strong>of</strong>the se refugees arrived in Ca nada, andwere assisted by <strong>Ukrainian</strong> organizations,which included the UWAC.1944 marks the beginning <strong>of</strong> St.Andrew’s College, the theological seminary<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> <strong>Church</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> (UOCC). The first collegebuilding was located on <strong>Church</strong> Ave.,and was purchased by the Con sistory <strong>of</strong>the UOCC with a small down-payment,the balance to be paid <strong>of</strong>f in installments.They appealed to all the organizations<strong>of</strong> the Ukrain ian Self-RelianceLeague <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> for fi nancial help withthis project. The USRL component organizationstook up the call, and collectionswere launched all across Cana da.This first college, in addition to in -struction in theology, ran a Grades 10-12 high school curriculum. In the firstyear there were more girls than malestudents enrolled in the program.Toward the end <strong>of</strong> the second year,the Director <strong>of</strong> St. Andrew’s College ap -proached the National UWAC Exe cutivewith the idea <strong>of</strong> constructing a separateresidence for the female students.In spite <strong>of</strong> the fact that they werestill burdened financially with fundraisingcampaigns for the Red Crossand the refugees in Europe, they decidedto launch yet another fund-raisingcampaign on behalf <strong>of</strong> the girl’s residence.After nearly two years, early in1948, a building for the girl’s residenceadjacent to the College building waspurchased by the College Administra -tion. The UWAC had collected $9,496.01,and turned it over to the College.The campaign had <strong>of</strong>ficially ended,but the local UWAC branches continuedcollecting money for this residencefor some time.The work <strong>of</strong> the UWAC on behalf <strong>of</strong>St. Andrew’s College did not end there.Donations from members and branchescontinued. When the College soldthe building they had occupied, andcon structed a new building on theUni versity <strong>of</strong> Manitoba campus, financialas well as moral assistance was providedby the UWAC. After one year <strong>of</strong> marriage, we havebeen struggling with the followingmajor ques tion: In which religion willwe raise our future children? I knowthat a successful marriage is built onsacrifice and consideration for yourpartner, but what do you do when oneperson has to give? I am not willing tocompromise on this issue? Please help.As time passes, I feel more confused.E-mail RespondentI recently received this E-mail. Myresponse appears below. While my re -sponse may be especially relevant tocouples with similar issues and challenges,I believe my suggestions alsorelate to all couples who are strugglingto get past couple gridlock and cultivateoneness. Here is how I answeredthis respondent.Cyber Confession…Really?n What's the one thing you've done noone else can ever know?The mere thought <strong>of</strong> dredging upsome dark and hidden sin, inspires ahard gulping swallow, a pounding heartand perhaps a blush on the cheeks.Unconfessed sin left festering deepin our psyche can cause psychosoma ticillness. It gnaws on our conscience androbs us <strong>of</strong> inner peace and tranquility.Sin simply means missing the mark ormisusing the full potential <strong>of</strong> the giftsGod has given us.The Epistle <strong>of</strong> James chapter 5:16tells us: "Confess your trespasses to oneanother and pray for one another, thatyou may be healed. The effective ferventprayer <strong>of</strong> the righteous man availsmuch."The early Christian church believerspracticed something that todaywould be considered radical. Theypracticed public confession... confessingsins publicly in the context <strong>of</strong> community.Over time, the practice be cameun workable, causing division, scandalMarriage and FamilyDear Respondent,As you may already know fromreading the information on the In ter -faith Marriage website, couples whohave strong connections to their religiousand cultural backgrounds aremore vulnerable to encountering challengeslike those you've described.Often, it is not easy for such couples tocome to mutually satisfying resolutionsbecause both partners are highlycommitted to their backgrounds.Another closely related reason isbe cause one partner usually has tomake most <strong>of</strong> the concessions. As a re -sult, many couples with high connectionsto their backgrounds are unableto reach mutually satisfying resolutionsfor months and even years. Evenwhen changes occur in such marriages,they are <strong>of</strong>ten unilateral changes thatcreate distance and negatively affecttheir relationship.So, I'm glad you wrote me, becausethese days couples—especially newlyweds—can'tafford to remain stuck forlong periods <strong>of</strong> time. Gridlock is toxic,and it compromises oneness by infectinga young couple's marriage withdes tructive negativity. With that stated,here are some suggestions that I hopewill help you both get past the gridlockyou have written about to me.My SuggestionsStep #1. Once you review my re -sponse, if you're interested in tryingwhat I've suggested, inform your husbandthat you wrote to me for a secondopinion, and let him review my e-mail.If he finds what I've written <strong>of</strong> value,and is willing to try these ideas, makean appointment with one another.You'll need around an hour to begintaking advantage <strong>of</strong> these suggestions.Step #2. Formerly commit yourselvesto finding some mutually satisfyingChrist-centered resolutions. Thisstep is important because it helps youform a partnership that begins to dissolvethe-him-versus-her stand<strong>of</strong>f thatlikely exists between the two <strong>of</strong> youwhenever the issues you've describedarise.Step #3. Once you've formed apart nership, pray together for guidanceand assistance. Your prayersshould come from the heart. If possible,each <strong>of</strong> you should take turnspray ing. Whoever feels the most comfortablewith this suggestion shouldbegin. If you’re not certain how to be -gin this step, begin by reciting prayersfrom each partner's tradition. Onceyou've read several prayers, end byspeaking to God from your heart justas you might speak to a trusted mentoror parent figure.Step #4. After you pray together,start defining and articulating theissues and problems in respectful languagethat you both understand.During this step, each <strong>of</strong> you shouldtake turns speaking. One <strong>of</strong> you shouldwrite down the issues in objective languageon a piece <strong>of</strong> paper entitled,"Our Christ-centered Part ner ship."You should also avoid becoming criticaland contemptuous. Blame, criticismand contempt will quickly putone or both <strong>of</strong> you on the defensiveand rancor in the church. The churchcommunity representative, the priest,was eventually charged with listeningto confessions and the Sacrament <strong>of</strong>Con fession developed to fulfill thehealing and restorative benefits <strong>of</strong> confession.What is a sacrament in simpleterms? In the broad sense a sacramentis a material, visible act used by God asa channel <strong>of</strong> Grace for the spiritual andthe invisible. The world is made up <strong>of</strong>"sacraments <strong>of</strong> the natural order."A handshake is a sacrament in thesense, that it is a visible clasping <strong>of</strong>hands to express the invisible, usuallywelcome and friendship.Our western society has difficultywith the concept <strong>of</strong> confession and sin.Admitting that we have sinned to aper son or group somehow negativelyimpacts us in a culture artificiallypropped up with issues <strong>of</strong> self imageand self esteem. It's not my fault; it issomeone else's, etc., etc. Yet as the sayinggoes, we need to sometimes"getand back into gridlock.Step #5. Assuming you completestep four, this next step will require youto clearly and respectfully talk aboutwhat you've done to loosen the gridlock.Often, partners have differentopinions about what's been done. Youshould take turns speaking and listeningwhen attempting to complete thisstep. Both partner's perspectives areim portant here and throughout thisexercise. As you proceed through thisstep a common understanding <strong>of</strong> theissues and problems should emerge,along with a better understanding <strong>of</strong>the reasons that have caused the gridlock.Warning: Do not proceed to thenext step until you both believe stepsfour and five have been completed.In an effort to complete the last twosteps the following few observationsmight help. Please remember that bothpartners may have different opinionsand strong beliefs regarding the stepsthat need to take place in order forthem to get past the gridlock. Please al -so avoid getting too bogged down inthe details—the devil is <strong>of</strong>ten in thedetails. Your common objective shouldbe to chronicle what has been doneand what you've done to resolve thegridlock.Step #6. If you get through the firstfive steps, you are now ready to proceedto the sixth step. During this stepyou will want to begin identifyingsome new and different strategies thatmight prove helpful to you in yourquest to find some mutually satisfyingresolutions. During this step it's especiallyimportant that you work togetherin an effort to find new and differentsolutions. Recalling any counsel you'vereceived from your pastors and whatScripture teaches should prove indispensableto you in identifying newpotentially effective strategies.Step #7. If you manage to get to thispoint, you are ready to proceed to theseventh step. During this step reviewall the information that was generatedduring the last step and prayerfullyselect the best and most promisingstrategies. Then try them.Step #8. If you get through the firstseven steps, before implementing thestrategies you have identified, don'tsomething <strong>of</strong>f our chests." We now cando that easily without exposure orrepentance. As our culture has degeneratedto the absurd, there are nowquick convenient and anonymous wayto deal with those nagging indiscretions<strong>of</strong> ours: cyber space confessions.It is the Internet confessional. It’strendy and catching on.Have some slip-ups to shake looseand can't or won't make it down to theparish priest? No problem. Just havethem absolved and dealt with by postingthem online at an e-confessional.You're just a few keystrokes away fromartificially deleting a guilty conscience.These sites <strong>of</strong>fer others the chance to seewhat you've posted and see if your sinsare comparable or as grievous as theirs.What a voyeuristic bonus! The rest<strong>of</strong> the world can get online and identifywith the transgressions <strong>of</strong> others.And consider the false therapeuticbenefits in this system. We can deludeourselves into thinking how very goodwe are in comparison to others. Whone eds a priest or time <strong>of</strong> prayer and selfreflection anymore? We can fool ourselvesby thinking we can hide from13forget to complete this process bypray ing together. Your prayers shouldin clude the following thoughts andrequests, but not be limited to them:Thank God for the love that you share.Ask God and your partner for forgivenesswherever appropriate. Ask Him tocontinue to richly bless you with thegifts <strong>of</strong> the Holy Spirit—gifts like "love,joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness,faithfulness, gentleness, self-control"(Gal.5:22).Ask Him to help you both live withthe decisions that will prayerfullyemerge through this process.A Few Additional SuggestionsSome couples will be able to completeall <strong>of</strong> these steps in one sit ting.Some will not. So, if an hour passes andyou're not done with the exercise,make an appointment to come back toyour discussion within 48 hours. Theobjective <strong>of</strong> this exercise is not to seehow fast you can get through each step.The objective is to help you bothprayerfully identify new ideas that canguide you to some Christ-centeredmutually satisfying resolutions.As you prayerfully struggle througheach <strong>of</strong> these steps, you should als<strong>of</strong>ind that the Holy Spirit will take control<strong>of</strong> the issues and problems you'vedescribed, and your egos will take abackseat. If this occurs, you will als<strong>of</strong>ind that your hearts will s<strong>of</strong>ten andsome mutually satisfying resolutionswill emerge that you can both live with.And finally, if you try these suggestions,and are unsuccessful, then itmaybe that you need some outsidehelp. Confession isn't an informationtransfer; it is a relational healing.That is why "share-a-sin" on an e-confessional site is such a tawdry distortion<strong>of</strong> the true spiritual rhythm <strong>of</strong>confession. Мені ж по -дібне було навіяне роздумуваннямпро своє минуле. Мені ось-ось 86. Яжив активним життям, а тепер менізалишилося лише згадувати всепережите, пересвідчене. Звичайновсе це діється в час без сон них но -чей.Останньо, ночами я роздумувавпро багато-чого, згадував свої ранніроки в сані священика в Лондоні,Англія; згадував людей, але мене чо -мусь, не покидала думка про великулюдину того часу, тепер забуту лю -дину,—гетьманича Данила Скоро -падського. Велика був він людина,але він забутий, ніхто його не зга -дує, про нього не пишуть, а він до -брого слова вартий.Данило Скоропадський, син ос -таннього Гетьмана України /ранішегенерал збройних сил/ народився 12лютого 1904 року в Петербурзі, Вмо лодому віці був змушений вийтина еміграцію. THE HERALD<strong>May</strong> 2011Summer Institute on Social Justice: Teaching the<strong>Ukrainian</strong> Famine -Genocide (Holodomor) and the<strong>Ukrainian</strong> Canadian Internment (6 credits)This special summer institute explores the meanings <strong>of</strong> social justice, humanrights, genocide and totalitarianism within the context <strong>of</strong> two case studies: oneCanadian and one European. The Canadian case study is the internment <strong>of</strong> Uk -rain ian Canadians in Canadian prison camps during World War One. The Eu -ropean case study is the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> famine-genocide <strong>of</strong> 1932-33, called the Holo -domor.These two events challenge how we think about social justice within the 21stcentury. An amalgam <strong>of</strong> history, culture, media, the arts and pedagogy, thiscourse will present a unique opportunity to examine any horrific event within ateaching and learning perspective.The course will provide a historical context <strong>of</strong> the two events, beginning withan overview <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Canadians and <strong>of</strong> Ukraine, seen withinthe broader context <strong>of</strong> 21st century Canadian and world history. The internmentand famine case studies will be examined in depth focusing on content, context,subtexts and pedagogy.The pedagogy component will be aimed specifically at teachers from Gradesk-12, and will examine ways <strong>of</strong> learning about horrific events, including contemporarytechnology-based ideas such as webquests, databases, online and mo -bile teaching methodologies. However, this course is not only aimed at teachers.Others, including graduate students, will have the opportunity to explore contentissues, or examine how horrendous events are introduced into the classroom.The course facilitators are Drs. Orest Cap and Denis Hlynka. Both arelong time pr<strong>of</strong>essors in the Department <strong>of</strong> Curriculum, Teaching and Learning.In addition to the designated instructors, the course will extensively draw uponcontent experts, both in person and via teleconferencing from Manitoba andacross <strong>Canada</strong>.Some <strong>of</strong> the highlights <strong>of</strong> the course include:• An opportunity to view critical documentary films dealing with the Intern -ment and Holodomor.• A look at why the Canadian government treated minorities as enemy aliens,during World War One, whether <strong>Ukrainian</strong>, German, or Austrian, and how thisextended to the treatment <strong>of</strong> the Japanese Canadians and others in World War Two.• A discussion <strong>of</strong> how RaphaelLem kin, the man who coined the term"genocide", defines that term relevantto the Holodomor.• An examination <strong>of</strong> George Or -well’s fantasy novel Animal Farm and… a little known fact … how it mightbe conceived <strong>of</strong> as a depiction <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Ukrainian</strong> famine.• A study <strong>of</strong> how these issues fit in -to the Manitoba school curriculum,Internment recognition -presented by curriculum specialistsCastle Mountain, Alberta.from Manitoba Education.The institute will be run as a two week 9 a.m.-5 p.m. program. She was known as a poetand a political activist. She was borninto a family <strong>of</strong> січові стрільці, a militarygroup fighting for <strong>Ukrainian</strong> in -dependence from 1912–919 againstboth Poland and Russia.As an adult, she also became a member<strong>of</strong> the Organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ukrainian</strong>Na tionalists. Due to her involvement,she was arrested in December 1945 andaccused <strong>of</strong> treason against the home -land. She was sentenced in March 1946to 10 years <strong>of</strong> hard labor camp and lifelongexile. In 1968, she was re leased,but prohibited from returning to Lviv.She settled in Ivano-Frankivsk whereshe became involved with the Шести -десятники, Sixties Activists, and work -ed as a nurse. In November 1972, shewas arrested and charged with en -gaging in anti-Soviet propaganda. Jan -uary 1973, she was declared a particularlydangerous repeat <strong>of</strong>fender, andwas sentenced to 6 years harsh laborcamp and 5 years exile. IrynaSe nyk joined the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> HelsinkiGroup in 1979. On October 30th, a do -cument was published with the titleЛаментація where three members,Ok sana Meshko, Nina Strokata andIry na Senyk addressed an appeal to theworld community informing them <strong>of</strong>the numerous instances testifying tothe escalation <strong>of</strong> State terror and de -famation directed at the <strong>Ukrainian</strong> hu -m an rights movement in Ukraine. Shewas released in August 1983. Iryna Se -nyk spent a total <strong>of</strong> 16 years in prisonand labor camps and 18 years in exile.The years <strong>of</strong> imprisonment andexile have not destroyed her love <strong>of</strong> life.This spirit is dramatically expressed inSenyk's poetry. She invites the readersto share her experiences, inspires themto rise above physical and mental an -guish and to share her love <strong>of</strong> thoseclose to her; Nature, God, and herHome land.It was while in prison that she wastaught how to embroider by a cellmate, a nun. 22A Mother’s LoveМатеринська ЛюбовFor Our ChildrenLove is patient, love is kind—it always protects, always trusts,always hopes, always perseveres. (read I Corinth ians chapter13). These words taken from the Bible are the essence<strong>of</strong> what a mother’s love is for her child.A mother’s love is something that no one can explain. Some -times, she loves her children even when they don’t deserve to beloved. It represents the highest level <strong>of</strong> sacrifice from the day thechild is born to the day she dies.In two recent issues <strong>of</strong> MACLEAN’S magazine there were articlesworth noting. The first one was about Chinese mothers whoare required by law to bear no more than one child, and then preferablya boy. It talks about the gut-wrenching pains that these mothersgo through when they give up their baby girls for adoption in foreigncountries.The other was <strong>of</strong> course the recent disaster in Ja -pan. We can only imagine what these mothers have gone throughlosing their children.During World War II—British mothers sent their children to Ca -nada to keep them safe from the war.Many examples <strong>of</strong> mothers’ love can be found in the Bible.Mothers and women in general are mentioned in the Bible manytimes as they played a prominent role then.Let’s review the story <strong>of</strong> Moses. At that time the king <strong>of</strong> Egyptwas afraid that the people <strong>of</strong> Israel were growing too strong so heordered that all the baby boys born to Israelites were to be drown -ed. The mother <strong>of</strong> Moses loved her baby too much to let such adreadful thing happen.When Pharaoh ordered all the baby boys to be put to death, shethought <strong>of</strong> a plan to save her infant son. She wove a water-pro<strong>of</strong>basket, placed the baby inside, and floated the basket in the NileRiver. Death on the cross was aslow, painful way to die. As Jesusgrew weaker and weaker, a group Dobrodiyka Jane<strong>of</strong> women stood at the foot <strong>of</strong> thecross and cried. Among the women was His mother Mary. Of all Hisfollowers, only these few women came to weep at Jesus’ feet. Marywas very sad to see how much her beloved son had to suf fer. (Readyour bibles about the se events in John 19:25-27) Je sus spoke toHis mother and told her that from now on John would be like a sonto her. Then He spoke to His disciple John and said, “Treat her likeyour own mo ther, John.”From that time on, John took Mary to live with him in his home.According to our Eastern Ortho dox tradition and teaching, the Vir -gin Mary lived at the home <strong>of</strong> the Evangelist John and ministeredto the sick and poor. Many <strong>of</strong> Christ’s followers came to her to findspiritual peace and joy. The years passed and as she neared herdeath she expressed the desire to see all the apostles. All <strong>of</strong> themcame except Thomas. Mary was buried in the Garden <strong>of</strong> Gethse -mane. Three days after her funeral the apostle Thomas arrived andwhen he went to visit Mary’s grave he was astounded to find itempty. So the apostles concluded that she had been taken intoheaven. We observe this feast called the Assumption <strong>of</strong> the VirginMary on August 28th. We still pray to her when we are in sorrow orneed so she is like mother to all <strong>of</strong> us.Generally the second Sunday in <strong>May</strong> is designated as Mother’sDay. This holiday as such was es tablished by an American ladynamed Anna Marie Jarvis following the death <strong>of</strong> her own mother in19<strong>05</strong>. On this day at the first church service she had 500 carnationsgiven to people to wear in honour <strong>of</strong> their mothers—a white carnationif the mother had died and a red one if she was living. 24(continued from the March issue)n The rampant corruption <strong>of</strong> the So -viet bureaucracy actually allowed thewealthier parishes to buy protectionfrom police harassment.There is no question that in the post-war period, the Russian church wasused as an instrument <strong>of</strong> Soviet policy.Initially, the Moscow Patriar chate play -ed an important role in the Sovietiz -ation <strong>of</strong> Western <strong>Ukrainian</strong> and Be -lorus' lands that Stalin had taken fromPoland. The <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Autocephalous<strong>Orthodox</strong> <strong>Church</strong>, which had revivedduring the war, was forced into exilewhile the faithful were arbitrarily in -corporated into the Russian <strong>Church</strong>.The <strong>Ukrainian</strong> Greek Catholic <strong>Church</strong>,a bastion <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ukrainian</strong> nationalism inGalicia, was liquidated in 1946 by a pro -cess <strong>of</strong> enforced "reunification" withRus sian <strong>Orthodox</strong>y. This move was in -spired by the renewed Moscow Patri -archate which coveted that chur ch’sholdings and faithful. As later eventsdemonstrated, the majority <strong>of</strong> Ukrain -ian Greek Catholics never reconciledthemselves with Russian Or thodoxyand remained closet Cathol ics, worshippingin the underground church orsimply pretending to be Or thodox.The gradual improvement in theinstitutional life <strong>of</strong> the Moscow Patri -archate was severely shaken by Khru -sh chev’s sudden and virulent anti-religiouscampaigns undertaken in the1960s. Although statistical data is im -precise, it is estimated that half <strong>of</strong> theworking <strong>Orthodox</strong> parishes were clos -ed down. In the 1970s the situation im -proved as the Kremlin began to use thechurch in the Cold War struggle. TheMoscow Patriarchate agreed to en dor -se the propaganda line about religiousfreedom in the Soviet Union and theKremlin’s peaceful intentions. As amember <strong>of</strong> the World Council <strong>of</strong><strong>Church</strong> es, the patriarchate diligentlypro moted Soviet foreign policy—the le -gitimization <strong>of</strong> the Soviet empire inEastern Europe (detente) and the Kremlinversion <strong>of</strong> international peace.Historical CommentaryThe Experience <strong>of</strong> Christian <strong>Church</strong>esin the Soviet EmpireCHURCH LIFE IN EASTERN EUROPETowards the end <strong>of</strong> World War II,communist regimes were establishedin Eastern Europe courtesy <strong>of</strong> the victoriousRed Army. Determined to createa loyal buffer zone, Stalin placedlocal communists in control <strong>of</strong> the oc -cupied lands. Schooled by the Krem lin,the new regimes set out to consolidatetheir power and then launch a so cialistrevolution modelled on the So viet system.Organized religion was con sidereda threat and as such had to be controlledand eventually eliminated.Eastern Europe represented a mixture<strong>of</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong>, Roman Catholic andProtestant faiths. In the pre-communistdays, these respective churches hadenjoyed privileged legal status, considerableinfluence and economic power.The newly imposed communist re -gimes attempted to establish firm controlover organized religion by restrictivelaws and intimidation. In the Ro -man Catholic countries <strong>of</strong> Poland,Hun gary and Czechoslovakia for in -stance, special effort was made to isolatelocal churches from the Vatican.The Vatican’s uncompromising anticommunistposture had made it a target<strong>of</strong> the communist propaganda, de -nouncing the papacy as a tool <strong>of</strong>Amer ican imperialism.As in tsarist Russia, the <strong>Orthodox</strong>church had been an integral part <strong>of</strong> thestate as the national religion <strong>of</strong> pre-World War II Bulgaria, Romania and <strong>of</strong>the Serbian, Macedonian and Monte -ne gran republics <strong>of</strong> Yugoslavia. Assuch, the church in these countries de -fined the national identity <strong>of</strong> its adherentsand tended to reflect the politicalviews <strong>of</strong> the government in power. Thelong standing Byzantine tradition <strong>of</strong>political authoritarianism and cultural-religiousconformity in the Balkansinadvertently facilitated the relativelyrapid imposition <strong>of</strong> the communistsystem. But there was an importantdif ference in the attitude <strong>of</strong> the Bulgar -ian and Romanian governments to -wards the church. Their atheism wasnot militant but politically pragmatic.In fact, the Bulgarian and Romanianregimes understood the historical andstrategic importance <strong>of</strong> their <strong>Orthodox</strong>churches and, in the short term, theychose to use it for their own purposes.Thus, the survival <strong>of</strong> the church in Bul -garia and Romania was not immediatelythreatened, but its social missionand its traditional community leadershipcertainly were.The Bulgarian and Romanian chur -ches were purged <strong>of</strong> unreliable personneland the legal church-state relationshipwas reorganized along the lines <strong>of</strong>the Moscow Patriarchate. The churchesreluctantly became agents <strong>of</strong> thecom munist regime whose policies ef -fectively destroyed the churches’ po -tential <strong>of</strong> becoming centres <strong>of</strong> opposition.The submissive behaviour <strong>of</strong> Or -thodox churches in Romania and Bul -garia was the reflection <strong>of</strong> the traditionalBalkan strategy <strong>of</strong> survival by outwardlyadapting to occupying powers.In the formative stage <strong>of</strong> the communistrule in Bulgaria, the primate <strong>of</strong>the local <strong>Orthodox</strong> church, ExarchStefan, did resist the stripping <strong>of</strong> thechurch’s traditional status and was re -moved from <strong>of</strong>fice. A number <strong>of</strong> priestswas also arrested but, by Soviet standards,the purge was rather mild. By1953, a mutually advantageous relationshipwas established between thegovernment and the church hierarchy.In return for complete obedience, thegovernment recognized the Bulgarian<strong>Orthodox</strong> <strong>Church</strong> as "the historicchurch <strong>of</strong> the Bulgarian people". Fur -thermore, with the approval <strong>of</strong> Mos -cow, the communist regime elevatedthe church to the prestigious status <strong>of</strong>the patriarchate. The restoration <strong>of</strong> thepatriarchal <strong>of</strong>fice (Patriarch Kiril), lostin the 14th century when the MoslemTurks had conquered the Balkans, wasa wise political move as it appeased theBulgarian sense <strong>of</strong> patriotism and pride.In return for its steadfast publicsup port <strong>of</strong> the political system, theBul garian church remained the largestnon-communist institution in thecountry. In the 1970s, for instance, thechurch boasted nearly 4000 parishes,several monasteries, a seminary and atheological school. It had a small publishinghouse which produced limitedreligious literature. The church supporteditself by the donations <strong>of</strong> thefaithful and revenues from the mo no -poly <strong>of</strong> candle production and sales.Still, the church was controlled and ma -nipulated. It was prevented from ministeringto the young who, in turn, werepressured not to attend religious services.It was assumed by the regime thatin time, as the old religious generationdied out, the young generation, educatedin the spirit <strong>of</strong> Marxism-Le ninism,would have no need for religion andthe church would wither away.Romania had been a police state be -fore the war and continued as one af -ter. The communist regime here wasthe most repressive in the entire satellitesystem; however, the regime alsorecognized the historic importance <strong>of</strong>its <strong>Orthodox</strong> church in the nationbuildingprocess and even provided thechurch with limited funding. Not asingle parish church was closed. No -netheless, the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Cults had ex -tensive discretionary powers to interfereand limit religious activities and itused those prerogatives.The Catholic and Protestant experienceunder communism ranged fromserious difficulties to reasonable ac -com modations. It was the Roman Ca -tholic <strong>Church</strong> <strong>of</strong> Poland, respected bythe Polish people as their national in -stitution, which defiantly refused tosub mit itself to the new communistauthority. Under the strong leadership<strong>of</strong> its primate, Cardinal Wyszynski, thePolish church relied on public supportto withstand government pressure andeven to denounce atheism. In Hungary,too, the communist regime found re -sistance on the part <strong>of</strong> the Catholicchurch. But in Czechoslovakia, with itslong secular tradition, the Catholicchurch had been considerably weakerand as such experienced severe repressionuntil the Prague Spring <strong>of</strong> 1968.In Hungary (63% Roman Catholic,25% Protestant), the communist re -gime was led by a Moscow-trained lead -ership which strove to make Hun gary acarbon copy <strong>of</strong> its sponsor. As a result,Hungary experienced more terrorbetween 1948 and 1953 than any othersatellite. Cardinal Josef Mind zen ty, theconservative primate <strong>of</strong> the Ca tholicchurch, was an outspoken anti-communistand refused to cooperate withthe regime. The government ar restedhim and unleashed a crackdown onthe church. Religious orders were dissolved,several thousand monks, nunsand priests were imprisoned, churchproperty was confiscated, pa rochialschools were secularized and charitableorganizations were disbanded. Thedire situation for the Catholic churchimproved somewhat after Sta lin’s deathin 1953. A compromise was reachedwith the authorities by which Catholicbishops pledged loyalty to the state inreturn for the relaxation <strong>of</strong> anti -religiousregulations. Incidentally, Pro -testant denominations (Lutherans andCalvinists) fared better because theywere more cooperative and, more im -portantly, did not have external tieslike the Catholic church.Following the failed Hungarian re -volution <strong>of</strong> 1956, relations between thenew and pragmatic communist governmentand the Christian churchesВІСНИКтравень 2011Dr. Oleh Gerusimproved dramatically. In fact, the Ca -tholic and Protestant churches evenwon the right to <strong>of</strong>fer limited religiouseducation in public schools afterhours. Although attendance was voluntary,now atheist indoctrination <strong>of</strong>the young could be legally counteredby religious instructions. For theirpart, the churches recognized the de -termining role <strong>of</strong> the government inthe area <strong>of</strong> senior church appointmentsand agreed to endorse the cause<strong>of</strong> socialism, except atheism. Furtherimprovement in church-state relationswas illustrated by the election <strong>of</strong> severalProtestant clergymen to the Hun -garian parliament.The religious situation in East Ger -many (GDR) differed most noticeablyfrom the rest <strong>of</strong> the Soviet empire. Inthe early stages <strong>of</strong> communist rule, theregime itself was comparatively moderate.Because it was sensitive about theNazi past and because Berlin was thefocal point in the emerging East-Westtensions, the East German communistleadership initially refrained from un -dertaking Stalin-like repression. Se -condly, East Germany, the historicalcradle <strong>of</strong> the Protestant Reformation,was the only communist state with alarge and dynamic Protestant church,the Evangelical Lutheran. The RomanCatholic <strong>Church</strong> here, in contrast toneighbouring Poland, tended to be are latively passive institution. Indeed,the Evangelical Lutheran <strong>Church</strong> wasallowed to perform a wide range <strong>of</strong> re -ligious, social and educational functions.However, as the Cold War intensified, the communist government initiallytried to assert firm control overreligious activities. After a decade <strong>of</strong>tension during which the church en -joyed strong public support, the governmenteased its policies and even re -affirmed the Evangelical and Catholicownership <strong>of</strong> extensive church properties.Furthermore, it provided fundingto establish Protestant theological facultiesat six state universities.The Protestant church leadership <strong>of</strong>East Germany, while cooperative, wasnot subservient in the manner <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Orthodox</strong> hierarchies. It not only de -fended religious freedom but periodicallyspoke out independently on na -tional issues. The difficulty the governmenthad in controlling the Lutheranchurch without resorting to repressionwas largely due to the Protestant tradition<strong>of</strong> putting individual conscienceabove institutional discipline. In the1980s, the regime revised its strategicapproach to religion when it no longercharacterized religion as a reactionaryforce but as a necessary part <strong>of</strong> a socialistsociety in its formative phase. Theend <strong>of</strong> religion, however, was still itsultimate ideological goal.
