Піст—це часдля нас, щоб відхилитись від життєвих клопотів та про -аналізувати наше життя необдуманих задоволень—на -сичення нашого кожного фізичного, розумового таемо ційного ба жання ризикуючи нашими душами, амож ливо і ставлячи під загрозу жит тя тих, що оточують нас. "По тре бую чи"все ЗАРАЗ, а не завтра чи в "інший день", ми часто не бачимо не тільки чимнас Бог обдарував, але і Його Єди нородного Сина і нашу громаду Лю бові уЙого Тілі, Святій Церкві. Єдине справжнє бажання, яке нам "по тріб но" за -до вольнити, або точніше при йняти, це наша духовність, через яку ми при -ближаємось ближче до Бога—до божественної доско на лості "тео сис".В Євангелії говориться, що після Його Хрещення, наш Господь пішов у пу -стинню бути випробовуваним дияволом. Ми підсумуємо слова св. Івана Зо ло -то устого: "Він (Господь наш Ісус Христос) постив не тому що Йому по трібнобуло, але щоб навчити нас як піст може нас охоронити від дия волa. І щобвстановити термін нашого посту, Він постив сорок днів і сорок ночей—бу ду -чи непорушним від диявольських спокус." (13 проповідь на Матвія) Наш Го -сподь залишається вірним Богу Отцю—керуючи тілом, а не тіло керує Ним.Диявол нас спокушає кожний день і ми повинні пам'ятати, що ми та кожма ємо Святого Духа, котрий допомагає нам під час Великого посту та кожнийраз коли ми пробуємо постити з наміром отримати повний кон троль над на -шим власним тілом і направити наше життя та душу до вір ності. З цим на дум -ці, ми згадуємо слова єпископа Калістос Вер з книжки Право слав ний Шлях:"Зна ючи що людина не є ангел, але цілісність душі і тіла, Православна Церкванаполягає на духовній цінності тілесного посту.продовження на стор.3March 2012–The Month of Priestly CallingБерезень–Місяць священичого покликанняDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!n As Christians we are called by God tobear a great responsibility of concern forthe world and all that is in it; material andspiritual. Were it not for the immeasurablelove and mercy of God the Father,the redemptive suffering of God the Sonand the constant guidance and inspirationof God the Holy Spirit towards man -kind, we might, out of despair and a feelingof not being up to the task, cause thedestruction of this wonderful world inwhich we live. But, it is through our pray -ers and efforts that our love towards God,humanity and all creation is ex press edand finds worth in God. He has created usout of love to share in His creative processand even in a small way to contribute andbe responsible in the wise management ofthe gifts that He has given us. Each of ushas a special calling to serve God and hasreceived the appropriate gifts in the ap -propriate amounts in order to fulfill thatcalling. In I Cor. 12:7 St. Paul writes, "Toeach is gi ven the manifestation of the Spi -rit for the common good." At this time,we should direct our prayers to wards tho -se who are called to service in the ranks ofthe clergy in our Ukrainian OrthodoxChurch of Canada. We ought to pray thatthose who are so called hear God’s voice,are attuned to hearing the challenge toput aside those things that may be of asecondary nature in order to serve a highercalling—to pray at the Ho ly Altar, toremind their neighbours that the re is alife beyond this one that they need to preparefor, that they should not despair forwe are all the Lord’s. May the Lord hearour prayers for the next generation ofcler gy and may the worthy candidateshear His voice, "deny themselves, take uptheir cross and follow Him." Lentis a time for us to step back from the "rat race" of daily lifeto ex amine our lives of thoughtless indulgence—satisfyingour every physical, mental and emotional desire at theexpense of jeopardizing our very souls and quite possiblyendangering all those whose lives intersect with ours. In our "need" to have it allNOW, not tomorrow or "someday", we are often blinded to not only all that Godhas gifted to us, including His Only-Begotten Son and our community of Love inHis Body, the Holy Church. The only real de sire of life that we "need" to satisfy,or more apt ly to embrace, is our spirituality, through which we are drawn evercloser to God—to Theosis.The Gospel tells us that following His Baptism, our Lord was led into the de sertto be tempted by Satan. We paraphrase St. John Chrysostom: "He (our Lord JesusChrist) fasted, not because He needed to, but to teach us how good fasting is andhow effective a shield against Satan it is. That He may lay down the length of ourLenten Fast, He fasted for forty days and forty nights—standing firm against thetemptations of Satan." (Homily 13 in Matthew) Our Lord remains faithful and loyalto God the Father—controlling the flesh rather than His flesh controlling Him.We, too, are tempted on a daily basis by Satan and we need to remember thatwe also have the Holy Spirit to aid us during the Great Lenten season and at alltimes when we attempt to fast more intentionally in order to gain complete controlover our own flesh and direct our life and souls to loyalty and faithfulness.With this in mind, we share the words of Bishop Kallistos Ware from The Ortho -dox Way: "Knowing that man is not an angel but a unity of body and soul, the Or -tho dox Church insists upon the spiritual value of bodily fasting.continued on p.3ні провидіння йнатхнення Бога,Духа Святого су -проти людства мимогли б з роз пуки іпо чут тя менше вар -тости спри чи нити за -гибель цього пре кра с -но го світу, в якому ми живе мо. Many challengesarise. The world is suffering and yearnsfor help. Indeed, we are going through ageneral test. Some people call it a financialdecline; others refer to it as a politicalcrisis. So far as we are concerned, it isa matter of spiritual perversion. And asolution exists. Many resolutions areproposed and numerous viewpoints areheard. Yet, the problems persist. Peoplefeel deserted and alone. Their deeperna ture is ignored. They remain in thegloom of confusion and depression.Irrespective of the direction or solutionproposed, the various answers thatare offered cannot redeem humanity.For, from the outset, they render it captiveto corruption and death. TheChurch is the divine-human Lord, whoalone can liberate our soul. Upon en -tering the space of the Church, we enterthe atmosphere of divine consolation,of reconciliation between heaven andearth. We are at home. Our spi rit iscalm. We discover a heavenly beau tyand a spiritual maturity, "a holy fragrancecapable of reaching the ends ofthe world." The Church knows all thatwe suffer. It speaks the whole truth. Nonetheless, whatfollows is the rest of the soul, the healthof the spirit. We have our Creator andSav iour. Through the abundance ofHis mer cy, He has placed us at the in -tersection of incorruption and mortality.He has not forsaken us. He came tosave us. Through His cross, He abolish -ed death. He granted us incorruptionof the flesh.Since, therefore, we are planted withChrist, why are we troubled in vain?Why do we not run toward Him? TheChurch neither dwells on nor abandonsus to corruption. It knows ourdeeper inclinations and comes to oursupport and salvation. We need nourishment.Yet, "man does not live bybread alone." (Matt. 4:4) We also needspiritual un derstanding; however, weare not bodiless. In the Church, we discoverthe fullness of life and understandingas a div ine-human balance.Away from God, we are perverted andcorrupted. Whe rever material goodsare plentiful and waste is glorified,scandalous temptation and dark confusionprevail.Wherever human beings live withre verence and receive all things withgratitude and thanksgiving, all thingsare sanctified. The little is considered ablessing; the corrupt is dressed with theglory of incorruption. Not only areproblems solved, but even the sufferingof trials is transformed into the powerof life and a reason for giving glory.When this occurs with our soul, whenwe find peace and salvation by committingall things to Christ our God,then our mind is illumined. We cometo know ourselves and the wholeworld. We have faith in the One whoalone is powerful. This in itself streng -thens the faithful. Then, by means of aninvisible radiance, it is transmitted assupport to all those who hunger andthirst for the truth.The entire world needs salvation byits Creator and Maker. The entireworld needs the presence of the faithand communion of the Saints. Let usgive thanks to the Lord our God for allHis benefits, as well as for the presentperiod of Holy Lent.Behold, this is a welcome time; be -hold, this is a time for repentance.May we journey through this timeof the Great Fast with contrition andconfession so that we may reach theinfinite joy of the Resurrection of ourLord and Saviour Jesus Christ, towhom is due all glory, honour andworship to the ages of ages. Food and drink are, on the contrary, God’s gift, from which we are topartake with enjoyment and gratitude.We fast, not because we despise the divinе gift, but so as to make ourselves awarethat it is, indeed, a gift—so as to purify our eating and drinking and to make themno longer a concession to greed, but a sacrament and a means of communion withthe Giver. Understood in this way, ascetic fasting is directed not against the body, butagainst the flesh (meaning whatever within us is sinful and opposed to God). Its aimis not destructively to weaken the body, but creatively to render the body more spiritual."Our prayer is that during this Holy Lenten period, we all will contemplate theWord of God, read more frequently—especially at the time we are tempted toabandon the fast, and that we will dwell on the events of God Friday, allowing ourLord’s sacrifice to break through our secularized hearts and minds so that we,along with the thief who died on the cross next to our Lord, will longingly say:"Lord, remember me when You enter into Your Kingdom." It is only by such contemplationthat we can hope to experience the completeness of the joy expressedin the Tropar of Pascha: "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death bydeath, and to those in the tombs bestowing life."We beg for your prayers for us as your Spiritual Fathers and we assure you allof our own prayers for a truly honest and sincere effort of spiritual pilgrimagedu ring the Great Lent. Потім ди я кон голосно читаєСимвол віри і ви голошує Вічну па м'я -ть усім спочилим оборонцям ві рипра вославної, і Mногії літа—живим.Друга неділя Великого постуУ Другу неділю Великого постузвершується пам'ять св. ГригоріяПа лами, який жив у XIV ст. (див.стор. 12). Згідно з православною ві -рою він навчав, що за подвиг постуі молитви Господь осяває віруючихблагодатним Своїм світлом, якимсяяв Господь на Фаво рі. З тієї при -чини, що св. Григорій розкрив учен -ня про силу посту та молитви, йустановлено святкувати його пам'я -ть у другу неділю Вели ко го посту.Третя неділя Великого постуУ третю неділю Великого посту завсенічною виноситься після ве ли -кого славослів'я св. Хрест і про по ну -є ться для поклоніння вірую чим. Припоклонінні хресту Церква спі ває:Хресту Твоєму поклоняє мо сь, Вла ди -ко, і святе воскресіння Твоє сла вимо.Ця пісня співається і на Лі тургії за -мість Трисвятого. Церква ви ставляєв середині Чотири десят ниці вірую -чим хрест для того, щоб нагаду ван -ням про страждання і смерть Гос по -д ні надихнути та зміц нити тих, хтопоститься, на про дов ження подвигупосту. Св. Хрест за лишається для по -клоніння впро довж тижня, до п'ят -ни ці, коли він після Часів, перед Лі -тур гією вно си ться назад у вівтар. То -му третя не діля і четвертий тиж деньВеликого посту називаються хрес то -по клон ними.Четверта неділя Великого постуУ четверту неділю Великого пос -ту святкується пам'ять св. Іоана Ліс -твичника, який написав твір, де по -казав сходинки добрих діянь (у ви -гляді східців, або ліствиці), які ве -дуть нас до Престолу Божого. У чет -вер на п'ятому тижні відбуваєтьсятак зване стояння св. Марії Єги пет -ської. Життя св. Марії Єгипетської,раніше великої грішниці, повиннослужити для всіх прикладом істин -ного покаяння і переконати всіх уневимовному милосерді Божому. НаУтрені у цей день читаються ЖитієСв. Іоан Ліствичник.St. John of the Ladder.св. Марії Єгипетської і Канон св. Ан -дрія Критського, той самий, якийчи тається у перші чотири дні Вели -кого посту. Ця служ ба вста но -влена у Греції в по дяку Бого родиціза неодноразове визволення НеюЦаргорода від во рогів. The purpose of thisarticle is to draw attention to preparationsinvolving our inner spiritual life.The period of the Great Fast can bethought of as a major spring house -cleaning, but for our souls. Du ring thistime of the Great Fast, we want tocleanse ourselves of accumulated sinsthrough repentance, confession andfor giveness. The Church provides theguidance we need based on the examplesgiven by Jesus Christ Him self aswell as on the wisdom of the Saints.Virtue of HumilityAs we learned from the Gospelread ings preparing us for the Fast, oneof the first steps is to adopt an attitudeof humility. Humility is not a popularvirtue in today’s society. It is viewed asa weakness in Western culture in whichwe are supposed to be self-confidentand where aggression is rewarded. Yet,humility leads the way to God. St. Gre -gory Palamas states in his Homily Two,"Whereas humility is the virtue of thegood angels, and defeats any humanevil that comes upon fallen mankind.Humility is the chariot by which weascend to God… It is formed by repentance,releases streams and streams ofThe Great Fast Prayer of St. Ephrem the SyrianFrom the Editorial Desktears; brings out the worthy fromamong the unworthy and leads themup to unite them with God, justified byHis free gift for the gratitude of theirfree disposition."This virtue is also closely connectedto love as well as to the two greatestCommandments to place God aboveall (Ex. 20:2-7) and Jesus’ last commandmentto His disciples to "love oneanother, just as I have loved you." (Jn15:12) As the 6th C Desert Father AbbaDorotheos in his instructions formonks explains, humility puts us onthe road to the kind of love that JesusChrist tells us about in the Gospels. Wedo God’s will because we love him."Therefore, whoever wants to find truerest in his soul must learn humility andhe will see that all joy, all glory and alltrue rest are to be found there, whilst inpride it is just the opposite," he says.However, our modern lifestyle makes iteasy to be tempted to love other thingsfirst, such as ourselves, possessions, andper sonal gains. Humility can also be li -berating. By relying on God and carryingout His Will, it frees us from the ratrace of keeping up with our everywhim. God will provide us with abeau tiful life more fulfilling and abundantthan we could have ever createdfor ourselves if only we allow Him.RepentanceHumility is also an essential componentof true repentance. Jesus Christcalled upon us to "repent, and believein the Gospel." (Mk 1:15) After distancingourselves from Him throughsin, the Lord gives us a chance to re -consider our thoughts and behaviors,and to change. To repent is to do a totaln This is a prayer of repentance by one the great spiritual teachers, St. Ephraim theSyrian, which is said during the Great Fast. This prayer is read twice at the end ofeach Great Fast service Monday through Friday, but not on Saturdays and Sundays.At the first reading, a full prostration follows each petition. Then, we make 12 smallprostrations, bowing from the waist, saying: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner."The entire prayer is repeated making one final prostration at the end.The Great Fast Prayer of St. Ephrem the SyrianO Lord and Master of my life!Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness,lust of power, and idle talk. (full prostration)But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility,patience, and love to Thy servant. (full prostration)Yea, O Lord and King! It notes that "repentanceis a radical change of one’s spirit, mind,thought and heart – a complete reorientationto a life centered in Christ."St. Nektarios, who was Bishop of Pen -tapolis in Greece in the early 20th C,calls repentance and confession "thelife-saving medicine for society" as wellas our obligation as Christians in orderto lift up our hearts to God. For St.Nektarios repentance becomes an ob -ligation as well as a matter of ethics:"True repentance is a change of mindfor one’s actions, an alteration of one’sethical life, a change toward the better,complete rejection of one’s previouslife and sin, steadfast willingness toexercise virtue, complete unification ofone’s will with the Divine Will. There -fore, repentance is an ethical rebirth ofman and the starting point of a new,virtuous life. He who repents has abroken and humbled heart." There arefew outward signs of repentance be -yond tears. Repentance unfolds in ourinner selves. Both St. John of Damascusand St. Theophan the Recluse clearlyidentify its psychological aspects: Onemust be aware having sinned beforeGod. One must voluntarily turn fromtransgressing toward the oppositevirtues. One must display sincere re -morse and contrition, and take responsibilityfor sin. One must also avoidthese sins in the future.ConfessionRepentance is a key ingredient forconfession. "Confession is a voluntaryand sincere declaration of sins committed,"explains St. Nektarios, whohas written extensively on confession,"without shame and reservation, butwith self-reproach and contrition tothe person who has been appointed bythe Church to forgive sins. …This confirmsa true change of mind andexpresses sorrow for the transgressionof God’s commandments." Thus, confessionmakes the inner process ofrepentance real before God throughparticipating in the Sacrament andaffirming through words. In the Sacra -ment of Confession, the priest asks usdirectly if we repent the sins for whichwe ask God’s forgiveness. This is not aquestion to be answered on the spur ofthe moment. St. Nektarios explainsthat one needs to prepare ap propriat -ely before this Sacrament. "It is necessaryfor the person who comes to confessionto examine himself many daysin advance, to weigh precisely everydeed, to ascertain his insufficienciesand his excessiveness. Because weshould not forget that during confessionwe stand and declare our sins be -fore God so that we may attain mercyand the forgiveness of our sins." Tohelp us examine our conscience, pre -par ations for confession involve prayerand fasting. According to St. Nektarios,prayer and fasting are "useful as ameans of examining ourselves, of diagnosingour true ethical state, of preciselyappraising our sins, and of un -der standing their true character. With -out fasting and prayer we are deprivedof a means of self-knowledge, we areunable to acquire a true picture of oursins and complete consciousness andcontrition of heart, and consequently,true and fruitful confession."St. Nektarios writes, "Confession istruly a divine commandment becauseit is an injunction of the heart." He alsoidentifies several purposes for confession:(i) it is a commandment of God;(ii) it returns and restores peace be -tween God and man; and (iii) it benefitsman both morally and spiritually."If we confess our sins, He is faithfuland just to forgive our sins, and tocleanse us from all unrighteousness."(1Jn 1:9). In other words, he says thatconfession fills our obligation to God,it strengthens our relationship withGod, and it improves our overall wellbeing.St. Nektarios makes an importantpoint. God is willing to forgiveevery kind of transgression, but it is upto us to become aware of them and tobring these to confession. St. Nektariosconsiders confession so important thathe calls it "a life-saving medicine forsociety because it is capable of savingmany souls from destruction—soulsthat are lost through deception, im pro -per recollections and evil thoughts."ForgivenessDuring the Great Fast, the faithfulcan participate in two beautiful servicesthat cultivate humility, and helpus with repentance and forgiveness.After Vespers on the Sunday before theGreat Fast begins, a special Rite of For -giveness is served. The clergy and faithfulask for forgiveness from one anotherto begin the Great Fast with purehearts, in keeping with the Lord’steaching: "For if you forgive men theirtrespasses, your heavenly Father willalso forgive you." (Mt 6:14) The servicetakes place in the solemn mood of theFast with the entire church participating—theclergy is vested in dark co -lours, the lighting is dimmed, the readerschant in somber tones.The first prayer, marking the start ofthe Great Fast, is the prayer of repentanceby St. Ephraim the Syrian (seesidebar). This short prayer lists all ofthe worst temptations that we can facedu ring the Fast, but it also provides thespiritual tools—the virtues—that weneed to overcome them. Repeatedmany times throughout this 40-dayperiod, it is a genuine cry to the Lord tohelp us in our struggle. It is accompaniedby full prostrations, a liturgicalgesture very foreign to our Western se -cular world. The prostration is a symbolicgesture that helps us develop anintrinsic sense of humility.Another deeply moving service isthe Great Canon of St. Andrew of Cre -te, served in parts throughout the firstfour days of the Great Fast and in itsentirety on the Thursday in the fifthweek. He drawson themes of human weakness fromthe Bible, mixing this sharp imagerywith his own inner examination. St.Andrew uses the word "I", yet he speaksfor all of us, showing us how we havedistanced ourselves from God. Theintensity of his humility and repentanceseems shocking to our Westernmindset. St. Andrew implores in theCanon, "Where shall I begin to lamentthe deeds of my wretched life?... Come,wretched soul, with your flesh, confessto the Creator of all. In future refrainfrom your former brutishness, and offerto God tears in repentance.... Havingrivalled the first-created Adam by mytransgression,... Alas, wretched soul!Why are you like the first Eve?... I havesinned above all men, I alone have sinn -ed against Thee." The reading of the Ca -non is accompanied by prostrations andthe prayer "Have mercy on me, O God,have mercy on me" is re peated witheach Ode. Our entire being is called torepent—we make the prostrations andother liturgical gestures; we hear thesolemn chanting; we smell the waftingincense; we see the dim med lightingand dark-vested clergy; we focus ourmind on what St. Andrew is telling us;and our heart reaches out to the Lord.When we have completed our 40day journey to Pascha, we may be disappointedin our failures and in ourweakness in the face of temptation.However, it is through struggle that wegain strength. THE HERALDMarch 2012From the Office of the Consistory9n The Office of the Consistory has sent out to parishes and clergy a package ofmaterials which contained the Newsletter from the Consistory, the AnnualCongregation Report forms, the 2011 Audited Financial Statement of the UOCC,Revised Bylaws as Amended among other informational forms.We would like to draw attention to the following items:1. The 2012 Annual Congregation Reports: In accordance with UOCC policiesand procedures, we request that these reports be completed and submittedto the Consistory Office no later than March 31, 2012. It is imperative that thesereports be accurately completed and respectfully submitted with the parish’s correctedlevy list and payment. The report must be signed by the Parish Priest,President and Secretary attesting to its accuracy. This year for the first time allparishes/congregations are asked to submit a copy of their parish’s Annual Con -gregation Report to their Eparchial Bishop.2. Levy Payments: The levy payment for 2012 is set at $77.00 per individualmember. The levy increase is based on two resolutions adopted at the 22nd SO -BOR of the Ukrainain Orthodox Church of Canada held in July 2010. Reso lu tion#18 was applicable to membership levies to the Consistory, 2010 to 2015; whileResolution #11 dealt with membership levies for the Theology Program at St.Andrew’s College. Based on the adoption of Resolutions #18 and #11, the UOCCLevy schedule is as follows:Year 2011 Levy: $73.00 per individual member($65.00+$3.00/UOCC/ +$5.00/College/)Year 2012 Levy: $77.00 per individual member ($73.00+$3.00 + $1.00)Year 2013 Levy: $81.00 per individual member ($77.00+$3.00+ $1.00)Year 2014 Levy: $85.00 per individual member ($81.00+$3.00+ $1.00)Year 2015 Levy: $89.00 per individual member ($85.00+$3.00+ $1.00)The Levy assessments for each parish are based on the number of registeredmembers your parish had as of December 31st of the year past. For 2012 the levypayments will be calculated based on the number of members your parish hadregistered as of December 31st of the previous year, 2011, not on the membershiproll as it stands in the current year, 2012.We would appreciate receiving the completed Annual Congregation Reportalong with the Levy List and Levy payment by March 31, 2012. Updatingthe changes to your membership ensures that our membership information iscurrent and that your parish members receive uninterrupted delivery of theVisnyk every month. Please advise us of new members joining during the year sothat they may be registered to receive the Visnyk/the Herald. Adding new memberswill not affect your current year’s levy assessment, but they will be in cludedin next year’s assessment.Any parish or congregation receiving the services of a parish priest, even if itis only one service a year, is considered to be active, and is required to completethe Annual Congregation report and pay levies to the Consistory. Its memberswill be entitled to receive a subscription of Visnyk/the Herald. We are currentlyreviewing our subscribers’ list to determine whether or not all subscribers havetheir levies paid up for which they receive the Visnyk/the Herald or have subscribedindependently.4. Parish New Member Incentive Program: At SOBOR 2005, it was resolved(Resolution 18.1 and 18.2) that the UOCC implement a Parish New Member In -centive Program as a national pilot program. SOBOR 2010 (Resolution #1) reaffirmedthe continuation of the New Member Incentive program for another fiveyears. The objective of the program is to encourage new members to join one ofour parish communities, to worship with its faithful and as a parish family toseek the grace of God and salvation in His Glorious Kingdom. The key elementsof this program are: (1) a 2-year moratorium on membership levies to be paid tothe parish and, in turn, suspension of levies paid to the Consistory for those newmembers for two years who have been officially registered as members of theparish; (2) that the Visnyk/the Herald be sent to these new members complimentaryof the UOCC Mission Fund; and (3) that those parishes wishing to participatein the New Member Incentive program must advise the Office of the Con -sistory of their wish. Our Faith10 ВІСНИКберезень 2012The Divine Liturgy ExplainedIn the Orthodox Church, the Divine Li -tur gy is the primary worship service inthe Church. The Divine Liturgy is servedevery Sunday as well as at other timesduring the year. Therefore, it is importantthat faithful Orthodox Christiansproperly appreciate its significance. InOctober 2011 the Visnyk / the Heraldbe gan a series of articles that shed somelight on the Divine Liturgy. It beganwith a two-part exploration of the Litur -gy of Preparation, which precedes theDivine Liturgy, followed by laity preparation.This series takes readers step-bystepthrough the Divine Liturgy. It paysparticular attention to the significance,meaning and symbols of the Divine Li -turgy to enlighten the reader and to presenta greater understanding of thisbeau tiful and prayerfully powerful worshipservice. In the February 2012 issueof Visnyk / the Herald, we featured thefirst half of the Divine Liturgy, called theLiturgy of the Word. We continue ourexploration of the Divine Liturgy by ex -amining the second half of the DivineLiturgy called the Liturgy of the Faith -ful.Part 3: The Liturgy of the FaithfulThe second half of the Divine Li -turgy, called the Liturgy of theFaithful, begins with the command,"All catechumens, depart.Let none of the catechumens remain.Let us, the faithful, again and again, inpeace, pray unto the Lord." In an cienttimes, only the Faithful—meaningthose who were baptized—were per -mitted to be present for the Sacra mentof the Eucharist, the most importantpart of the Divine Liturgy.The Liturgy of the Faithful is composedof four main parts:1) the final preparation of the HolyGifts and the faithful for the Sacra -ment of the Eucharist;2) the Sacrament of the Eucharist,primarily the Eucharist Canon—Ana -phora;3) the preparation for Communionand the partaking of Communion; and4) the Thanksgiving for Comm -union and the conclusion of the Li -turgy.The LitaniesThe Liturgy of the Faithful beginswith two small Litanies, or series of pe -titions, called the Litany of theFaithful. These Litanies of the Faithfulare similar to the two Small Litaniesthat separate the three Antiphons earlierin the service. It should be notedthat when a deacon is serving, theSecond Litany of the Faithful is longer,as supplementary petitions are added.The Great EntranceAfter the Litanies of the Faithful arecompleted, the priest and the deaconbegin another important part of theDiv ine Liturgy—the Great Entrance.The Great Entrance is a solemn processionwhere the Gifts of bread and winethat were prepared during the Pros ko -media are brought from the Table ofOblation to the Altar. The processionof the Great Entrance also holds greatsymbolic meaning. It represents JesusChrist’s voluntary suffering and deathon the cross. Therefore, during thisprocession the faithful stand, bow theirheads in reverence and pray that theLord remember them and all thoseclose to them in His Kingdom.There are several steps before theprocession itself begins. First, the choirbegins singing the first part of theCherubic Hymn: "Let us who mysticallyrepresent the Cherubim and whosing the thrice-holy hymn to the Life -giving Trinity, let us now set aside allcares of life." At this time, the priest,standing before the Altar, recites asilent prayer that prepares him to ministerat the Throne of God, while thedeacon performs a Small Censing.After the censing, the priest and deacontogether recite the whole CherubicHymn three times. The priest says thefirst half and the deacon responds withthe second half, "That we may receivethe King of all, who comes invisiblyupborne by the angelic hosts. Alleluia!Alleluia! Alleluia!"With the choir still singing, thepriest turns to the faithful, bows andasks forgiveness of his sins. Then, a setof symbolic liturgical movements takesplace before the procession. The priestand deacon move to the Table of Ob -lation. The priest censes the coveredGifts on the Table, and passes thecenser to the deacon, who bends downonto one knee. The priest removes thelarge veil and places it on the deacon’sleft shoulder. Then, the priest takes theDiskos, on which the portions of theprosphora have been cut and arrangedduring commemorative prayers, andgives it to the deacon, who now standsup as the priest takes the Chalice, containingthe wine. Throughout thistime, the choir has been singing thefirst half of the Cherubic Hymn in ameasured and solemn way, and nowstops as the procession begins.The deacon goes first, followed byRev. Fr.Michael Farynathe priest. They leave the Sanctuarythrough the north Deacon’s Door and,in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church,walk slowly in front of the Iconostasisto stand before the Royal Doors, facingthe faithful. The deacon, holding theDiskos, recites the first petition at theGreat Entrance commemorating thehierarch as well as any hierarchs presentat the Divine Liturgy. In the Uk -rainian Orthodox Church of Canada,the Metropolitan is commemorated,reciting his full title. The deacon thenenters the Sanctuary through the RoyalDoors, and kneels to the right of theAltar. The priest recites the remainingpetitions, which includes commemorationsfor the clergy, monastics, thecountry and government, as well aspar ishioners.The choir now completes singingthe second half of the Cherubic Hymn,as the priest enters the Royal Doorsand places the Chalice on the Altar. Healso takes the Diskos from the deaconand places the Diskos on the left sidenext to the Chalice. The priest firstremoves both small veils from theChalice and Diskos and places them onthe Altar. Next, he takes the large veiloff of the deacon’s shoulder and wrapsit around the censer briefly beforeusing it to cover the Chalice and Dis -kos. The priest censes the Gifts and thedeacon, then censes around the Altar.The Kiss of PeaceThe deacon then recites the Litanyof the Offering, thanking the Lord forthese precious Gifts, as the priest re -cites the Prayer of the Offering.(continued on p.11)The Passia Service n As we approach Pascha, the Holy Re -surrection of our Lord, God and SaviourJesus Christ, on April 15, a number ofspecial services are celebrated during thisLenten period. Some of these include theGreat Ca non of St. Andrew of Crete, theLi tur gy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts, andthe Passia service.The Passia Service, or the Passion ofChrist, is served throughout Ukraine onthe first four Fridays of Great Lent. How -ever, when it is difficult to gather on thatday, they are served on Sundays after theDivine Liturgy or after Vespers. The wordpassia comes from the Latin word forsuffering. The Passia Service is made upof hymns from Passion Week, and readingsfrom the Gospels about the Passionof Christ, our Lord’s suffering. The Passiais of Uk rainian liturgical origin. Metro -po l itan of Kyiv Petro Mohyla compiledthe Passia service in the 17th C in re -membrance of the Lord Jesus Christ’ssuffering and the suffering of the Uk -rainian Orthodox Church in Ukraineunder her oppressors. It has become atraditional liturgical rite with deep spiritualand moral content in contrast todramatic re-enactments of Christ’s sufferingseen in the West.A Golgotha, which is a large freestandingcross with the crucified Christ,is placed in the centre of the Church forthis service with tall candle holders toeach side and in front. A lectern with theHoly Gospels on it stands in front facingtowards the Ico nostasis. If there is noGolgotha available, then a large crossdraped in black cloth is set up in itsplace. The priest is vested in black vestments,including the epitrachilion, cuffs,and felon. The colour black is a symbolof repentance and turning away fromworldly desires.The service begins with the processionof bringing the Holy Gospels fromthe Altar. Then, the priest proclaims,"Blessed is our God..." followed by thechoir singing the Tropar of PassionThursday. As the choir sings, the deaconperforms the Great Censing, then chantsthe Great Litany which has special petitionsadded specifically for this service.The choir sings the Tropar, "You ac -complished salvation on earth..." Theclergy and choir take turns singing:"Glory to Your Suf ferings, O Lord." Thisis followed by the third Irmos Canon ofPassion Saturday, two Small Litanies, andthe same Tropar that proceeded theGreat Litany, with the sixth Irmos Ca nonand the Prokeimen. The reading from theGospel follows, and the faithful standholding lit candles. At each Passia servicea selection is read from one of the Go -spels about the suffering of Christ: Go -spel of St. Matthew 26-27 at the firstPassia service; Gospel of St. Mark 14-15at the second; Gospel of St. Luke 22-23 atthe third; Gospel of St. John 13-17 at thefourth; and Gospel of St. John 18-19 atthe fifth, if it is served. A sermon followsthe Gospel readings. Кухонний комітет разом з го ло -вою Марією Тонконог-Андерсонпри готував смачний святковий обід,включно з тортом для Єп. The children of St.Geor ge’s parish greeted His Grace Bi -shop Andriy in the morning, strewingfresh flower petals as they preceded HisGrace into the holy temple that wasfill ed with parishioners from St. Ge -orge’s and other congregations.His Grace was greeted at the churchentrance by parish council presidentMary Ulisko following the time-honouredUkrainian tradition of presentingbread and salt. Bohdan Brenko,par ish financial secretary/treasurer,presented Bishop Andriy with a wonderfulbouquet of red roses. Inside thechurch lovingly adorned in magnificentlywritten icons, parish priest, Rt.Rev. Mitred Pawlo Berezniak greetedHis Grace and provided a short historyof St. George’s parish.After Fr. Pawlo’s greeting, His Graceexpressed his great personal pleasurein visiting St. George’s parish for thevery first time. He noted that his firstim pres sion was how beautifully theicons of the temple are written. In concluding,Bishop Andriy again referredwith admiration to the parish as a"Church pysanka."His Grace led the Hierarchical Div -ine Liturgy that was also celebrated byRt. Rev. Mitred Fr. Воло -димира в Торонті, присвячений 120-літтю першого українського посе -лення в Канаді, 85-літтю Союзу Ук -ра їнок Канади і 75-літтю Україн сь -кого Музею Канади, як це під крес -лила у своєму слові невтомна ініція -торка та організаторка цього чайкумгр. Анна Троян.Знаємо, що перші українські се -ляни Василь Єленяк та Іван Пили -пів прибули на канадську землю ве -с ною 1891 p. In return, theyshowed me how special true lovereally is.I will now briefly summarizewhat I did at the orphanages. Thefirst or phan age housed 80 girls withintellectual disabilities. Du ring theday, we would play outside withthem. They had a playground thatjust finished be ing built. We wouldplay on the slides with them, swingthem on the swings, and play tag. Orwe would just sit down with them onthe benches. We took about 10-15girls to a nearby park, whe re theywere able to experience the outsideworld. They jumped on a trampoline,ate ice cream and met otherchildren in the park. The girls werealways active and always had smileson their faces. It was contagious!The second orphanage housedover 100 boys and girls with physicaldisabilities. More than half of themwere restricted to their beds. Theothers had wheelchairs. Du ring theday, we would spend our time withabout 10-15 children in one roomand later switch to a different roomto spend time with an other group ofchildren. One day, we took about 7children to the local su permarket.They were able to choose anythingthey liked. They picked ice cream,chips, pop and candy. Their eyes litup seeing everything like a child onChrist mas day. Another day, we tookchil dren in wheelchairs to the su -permarket. All the children had awonderful time waving to everyone,saying hello and goodbye, know ingit was coming to an end.I saw Christ in every one of tho sechildren. The way they hug ged me.The way they talked to me. The waythey smiled and laughed with me.The way they took my hand andlooked at me without a word. Thechildren gave me a new perspective,a new beginning, and a wonderful,everlasting love that cannot be ex -pres sed with words alone. These observances have be -en held in our churches sincethe year 843 A.D. and we shouldknow the reason for them.Icons have been in use fromthe earliest days of the ChristianChurch. Simple forms have be -en found in the catacombs whe -re early Christians met. Later, aschurches were built, the wallswe re decorated with mosaicsand frescoes to depict Christ,the Virgin Mary and the Saints.Legend has it that St. Luke wasthe first to write an icon of theVirgin Mary.But, there was a time in historywhen the use of icons wasfor bidden. Other religious groupsclaimed that icons were a form ofidol worship, and the Emperor listenedto them. These people wereknown as the iconoclasts. A councilcalled by Emperor Leo in 754A.D. had forbidden the ve nerationof icons. Orthodox monks and thefaithful had been severely punishedover this. For over 100 years,the controversy continued overthe use of icons in worship.In fact, it was two womenwho were responsible for spearheadingefforts to formulate anex plicit teaching about icons andtheir rightful use and place in theChurch. The first was Em pressIrene who called the Ecu men icalCouncil in 787 A.D. Then, about30 years later Em press The o do -ra call ed a Church Synod whichre stored the veneration of icons.If you do any re search, youwill find that there were severalindividuals with the name Theo -dora active in church history. Theone that was re sponsible for there turn of icons was the wife ofEm peror Theo philos. She was ave ry religious woman who wasquite disturbed by the idea ofstripping churches of icons. Andeven though her husband wasan iconoclast, she venerated iconsin her rooms in the palace. Ac -cording to the legend, when herhusband challenged her abouther icons, she said that she was"playing with dolls." Іподиякон Володимир ПідсоснийSubdeacon Volodymyr Pidsosny(January 30, 1964-January 25, 12012)n Volodymyr Pidsosny was born Jan. 30, 1964 in Winnipeg, Ma n itoba to Peterand Molly Pidsosny. The family soon mov ed to Regina, Sas katchewan whereVolodymyr attended the Descent of the Holy Spirit Uk rain ian Orthodox Soboruntil the age of five. This formative time led to a life that would be centred upona deep faith in God. Volodymyr moved several times during his childhood: toChurchill, Manitoba in 1969 where he attended elementary school, then later toGimli and Roblin, Manitoba for high school. Volodymyr also studied Uk rainianhistory and en rolled in Ukrainian language every year. He complet ed his lastyear of high school, while living with his parents in Salalah, Oman.Upon graduation Volodymyr returned to Canada, but embarked on a di -verse program of studies. In 1983 he enrolled in philosophy which took him toprograms at universities and seminary studies in Rome and Ottawa. Volo dy -myr began attending St. Stephen’s Ukrainian Ortho dox Church at PleasantHome near Fraserwood, Manitoba in 1985. A year later he began studies as athe ology student resident at St. Andrew’s College in Winnipeg. Volodymyr be -came actively involved in Church life, working at Veselka Ukrainian OrthodoxSummer Camp, serving as CYMK vice pres ident, and contributing his cantoringskills at various Or thodox Churches in Winnipeg. He was tonsured as areader in 1993 and then made a subdeacon at All Saints parish by His BeatitudeMetropolitan Wasyly. For the past 11 years, Subdeacon Volodymyr faithfullyserved in many capacities at St. Ivan’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, where hewas welcomed by the congregation—as cantor and subdeacon, singing the servicesand attending to the needs of the church.Subdeacon Volodymyr completed Business Man a ge ment at Hallcrest Col -lege in 1995, taking various cler ical and administrative positions throughoutWin nipeg. In addition, Volodymyr de monstrated his generosity in the greatercom munity, volunteering as an Agape Canister Partner for the Or thodox Chris -tian Mission Centre, as a blood donor—donating more than 50 times, and as avolunteer in Chap lain cy Services at the Health Sciences Centre.Subdeacon Volodymyr had a passion for adventure and travel nurtured inhis youth. Most recently, in 2008 he travelled for the first time to Ukraine andRussia, visiting Pecherska Lavra, Pochayiv Mon ast ery along with many of thereligious sites in Moscow. Just after recovering from a se rious health conditionSubdeacon Volo dymyr made another memorable trip in 2009, which was trulythe highlight of his ma ny travels—a pilgrimage to the Holy Land during Pas -cha. He learned from this experience to live each day with deep faith and trustin the loving benevolence of Our Saviour.Subdeacon Volodymyr continued to serve at St. Ivan’s faithfully until his fallingasleep in the Lord on Jan. 25, 2011. The Panahyda on Jan. 30 and the Fu neral Riteon Jan. 31 were served by Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter Fr. Dr. Oleg Kraw chenko, Rev.Fr. Gene Maximiuk, Rev. Fr. Alexander Harkavyi and Rev. Fr. Cor nell Zubritskyat St. Ivan Suchavsky Cathedral in Winnipeg. His Emi nence Me tropolitan Yurijand Chancellor Rt. Rev. Fr. Her parents,Sofia and Fedor Komarnicki, were pioneerswho immigrated to Canada fromHorodenka, Ivano-Frankivsk, WesternUkraine, in 1914. Anne was the young -est of 5 surviving children as two siblingsdied in childhood in Ukraine. Herchildhood and adolescence were mark -ed by the tragic early losses of her eldestbrother, father and mother.Anne attended school until age 12and began working at 13 to help supportthe family. Her first job was at ahotel in Arborg, Manitoba. She went onto work in Winnipeg as a nanny, waitressand factory worker. During WWII,February 20, 1923 – June 21, 2011n Петро Прокопів народився в 1923p. в чарівній частині України—Гуцу -льщині, Коломийського району. Гуцули на звук трем біти зусіх закутків спішили хто пі ш ки, ахто на конях на похорон, щоб від -дати останню послугу по мерло му,що відійшов у вічність, де нема бо -лю і зітхання. На таких тра диціях ізвичаях виховувався Пе тро. Він по -селився після Другої сві тової війнив Канаді у місті Ед монтон. Там напо чатку 50-тиx ро ків Петро у Пластізнайшов щирих друзів, брав участьу таборах, у спортивних змаганняхукраїнської футбольної команди вЕдмонтоні, і виступав у театрі в різ -них ролях. Петро був у відновле но -му осередку СУМ. В 1953 році Пе -тро одружився з Марійкою Хом'як,яка народилася на Волині, а в 1939 p.мо лодою дів чи ною приїхала з бать -ка ми до Канади. У Спеден в 1950 ро -ці за кінчила середню школу а зго -дом і універ ситет. Довгі роки пра -цю вала вчите лькою. Весілля від бу -лося в Спеден. Вінчання звер шилиотці Сацевич і Сенишин. Молодепо дружжя вклю чилося повністю вгромадське і цер ковне життя в ка те -дрі св. Івана в Ед монтоні. Брали уча -сть в церковно му хорі, допо ма галимолодіжній ор га нізації СУМК, ор -га нізовували ко ля ду, парафіяльнібен кети, тощо. Всю ди були при сут -ні, всю ди до кла дали своїх рук, ні ко -ли не відмов ля лися. Любили музи -ку, спів, прид бали ве лику біблі отекуі ми стецькі кар ти ни. Петро багатоподорожував і мав багато цікавихспо минів. Зго дом відійшли у віч ні -сть батьки, син Ми рон і дочка Ма -руся, що дуже від билося на здоров'їПетра й Марій ки, але вони ніколине нарікали, при й няли Божу волю.Прожили вони спі льно 58 років. Пе -тро ві дійшов у віч ність на 88-му ро -ці жит тя. Залишив дружину Ма рій -ку, сина Михайла, невістку Санді,вну ків Шон і Сару та родину в Ка -наді і в Україні. Відійшла глибоко ві -руюча і національно сві дома лю ди -на, до брий громадянин Канади,при мір ний член парафії та неза бут -ний при ятель. She thenmoved to Toronto, Ontario to work atSmall Arms Limited in Long Branch.Later, she waitressed at the Oak Roomin Union Station, assembled TV tubesat Radio Valve, and worked as a seamstressin clothing factories on SpadinaAvenue. Although she lived in the citymost of her life, she remained a farmgirl at heart. For many years she spenther summer holidays working on to -bac co farms all over southern Ontarioand, despite the hard work, she consideredthis her “farm vacation.”Anne loved to sing, and sang inchurch and community choirs all herlife. She saved money from her modestearnings to study vocal music at theRoyal Conservatory of Music. She earn -ed her certificate in fashion design andwent on to become a talented dressmaker.She loved needlecraft all her lifeand produced beautiful embroidery,knitting and crochet. She was agood gardener and loved to grow flowers.She was creative, artistic and veryge n erous. Although she lived modestly,she supported many charities.Anne met Emil Podrozny in Torontoand they were married in 1960. Theyhad one daughter, Sophie, born in 1961.Although Anne had a long and variedcareer, her role as a mother, wife andhome maker was the most important toher. She spared no sacrifice for her family.Until her retirement, she worked insewing factories and took in dressmakingat home. She delighted in her granddaughterDeanna, and took care of herhusband during his lengthy illness.Anne was an active member of St.Vo lodymyr’s Ukrainian Orthodox Ca -the dral in Toronto from 1950 to 2005.She was a member of both the Cathe -dral Choir and Ukrainian Women’s As -sociation Kn. Olha Branch for over 30years, and attended the Golden Age Fel -lowship for many years.
