CHS The Drumbeat Receives First Place Rating<strong>Copley</strong> High School’s student-runnewspaper, The Drumbeat, receiveda First Place rating at the 2011-12Ohio Scholastic Media Association’sspring conference. Prior to the statecontest, held at Kent State University onApril 22, The Drumbeat staff attendedworkshops in the fall and submitted thenewspaper, as well as individual articles,to the competition. The newspaperis judged on several categories, including: quality of written work, layout,photography, and ethics.This award is testament to the hard work and countless hours put in by thefollowing students: Editor in chief, senior Taylor Powell; news editor, juniorTaylor Beard; feature editors, sophomore LaQuisha Hilton and junior AmySmith; entertainment editor, sophomore Kayla Miller; layout editor, juniorIman AbdoulKarim; sports editors, juniors Austin Aten and Derek Brown;and photography editor, junior Terriona Morgan. Several of these studentsalso won individual awards for their articles. The class is advised by Ms.Sarah Petry.C-F <strong>Schools</strong> Foundation Awards ScholarshipsThe <strong>Copley</strong>-<strong>Fairlawn</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> Foundation Board approved over$20,000 in scholarships for graduating seniors at CHS. Approximately 27students will be awarded a scholarship ranging from $500 to $1000 dollars.Recipients were selected through an application and interview process.Students receiving scholarships excel academically, are active members oftheir school and community, and display leadership qualities that will assistthem in being successful in post-graduation studies and their careers.Herberich PTA Earns National PTA Family-SchoolPartnership Award of MeritThe Herberich PTA is oneof fi ve nationwide to earnthe Phoebe AppersonHearst National PTAFamily-School PartnershipAward of Merit. The awardrecognizes programs thateffectively implement theNational PTA’s NationalStandards for Family-School Partnerships. Herberich ESL teacher, Ashley Kimberlin, wrotethe application with help from PTA President Mrs. Romi Brozeit,based on three major special events held for ESL families annually:a Thanksgiving Feast, Multicultural Fair, and Spring Family Picnic. Allof these events provide opportunities for families to interact, practiceEnglish language skills in a non-threatening environment and supporttheir child’s educational experience. In addition, the PTA encouragesfamily involvement through a conversation group, library volunteergroup, after school programming, and PTA leadership opportunities.Many parents of students that are in the ESL program are also in thePTA and help to grow membership each year.“When families are engaged, students succeed. That’s why we’reproud to recognize the Herberich Primary School PTA with this awardof merit. They truly understand that bringing family engagement intothe school can positively impact student success,” said Betsy Landers,National PTA President.
