4 German leisure boat industry 4.1 German boat producers According to the Markus industry database 9 there are 295 “recreational ship yards” in Germany, but this also includes shipyards producing mega yachts and navy ships, as well as yards for which boat production is not the main activity. German leisure boat industry is mostly known for Bavaria Yachtbau and HanseYacht which are considered to be the second and third largest sailboat producers in the world (with French Benetau/Janneau group as the largest) 10 and both are now also active in motorboat production. In addition, Germany has a number of companies building sailboats in small lines or on custom made basis. A few German companies also produce small dinghies, inflatable boats and kayaks. Smaller shipyards often combine boat building activities with other activities such as service and maintenance, storage and production of equipment and trailers. BVWW (2010b) estimates that there some 40-60 active German leisure boat producers. The table below includes some more examples of leisure boat producers in Germany. Table 7. 4.2 Company turn over When looking into specific leisure companies, we can see that two companies dominate on the production side. Based on the 295 boat building companies we found in Markus, 13 of those seem to have leisure boats production as their prime activity (indicated in Italic in Appendix 1). Bavaria Yachtbau is the largest company with an annual turn over of € 275 million in 2007, followed by HanseYacht with €105 million. These two companies have dominant position and represent more than 95 % of the industry turn over. Bavaria Yachtbau and Hanseyacht is followed by KNIERIM Yachtbau GmbH (€6.5 million), Sirius- Werft GmbH (€3.1 million), Lettmann (€2.8 million), Vilm-Yachts GmbH (€2.3 million Euro) and Hellwig (€2.2 million Euro in 2008). We have not been able to find company figures on turn over for 2008 and 2009. Figure 4 The largest leisure boat producers on the map Lettmann Hellwig Knierim Vilm Sirius Bavaria 4.3 Export of leisure boats Hanse The German economy is to a large extent driven by export. This is also the case for the German leisure boat producers with export share of approximately 85 %. The figure below includes the number of exported boats and the total export value of boats from 2000 to 2009. The figures are based on Destatis trade statistics, but BVWW have adjusted the figures by excluding boats of more than 24 meters. Between 2000 and 2008, total value of export of sailboats grew from 118 million to 240 million Euros, whereas total value of export of motorboats grew from 68 million to 220 million Euros. Export statistics does not separate between new and used boats, and as mentioned in the introduction, the total figure might be higher due to a lack of reporting. Traditionally, Germany has produced and exported most sailboats, but, according to these figures, the export of motorboats has risen dramatically. The number of motorboats grew more than the total value of export, indicating that the average price per boat has declined. According to industry report, the export of German boats fell about 60 percent in the first half of 2009 compared to the first half of 2008(IBI, April – May 2010). INBDP 2010 Leisure boats Germany 15
