DIVERSIONAccording to Caldwell (2000: 16) diversion is the redirection of a conversion, particularly whenit involves direct questions. For example, you ask straightforward questions about her/his work andher/his recent divorce, and s/he ch3nges the subject or says s/he wants to talk about you. Dawson(1980: 275) defines diversion as drawing the attention and force ofan enemy from the point where theprincipal attack is to be made by attacking another point. Diversion is a deceptive strategy aimed atredirecting behaviour.EnncsSoanes (2002: 302) says that ethics deals with the moral principles that govern a person'sbehaviour on how a.tl activit"i is conducted. Encma World Enghsh Dictionary (1999) defines ethics asthe study of moral standards and how they affect conduct (takes a singular verb), a system of moralprinciples governing the appropriate conduct for an individual or group (takes a plural verb). Larson(1989: 30) adds that it is concerned with the type of character or conduct that is approved ordisapproved of, in terms of right and wrong or good and bad. Ethics is also called moral science ormoral philosophy. It is generally agreed that ethics seeks a critical grasp of the principles and standardsthat guide a man in making morally right choices in his daily activities. I will focus on ethical insight asintelligence in evaluation of communication events.ExAGGERATIONCaldwell (2000: 16) describes exaggeration as the embellishment and inflation of story elementsto enhance a personal position or create a false impression. For example, s/he tells you s/he is a seniortnarulger for an electronics manufacturer, but s/he is actually a clerk in the shipping departtnent. Soanes(2002: 306) and Dawson (1980: 331) define exaggeration as an overshowment; a representation ofthings beyond the truth, to make (something) seem greater than in reality. E.xaggeration as a deceptionstrategy seeks to create false ideas in the listener.FALSIFICATIONAccording to Encarta World English Dictionary (1999) faIsifi,,,lion is the alteration of documentsor evidence for the purposes of deception. Synonyms include distortion, forgery, fiddling,misrepresentation, deception and alteration. Caldwell (2000: 16) describes falsifications as deliberatestatements of false information. For example, he could claim he was the captain of the varsity football26
