For many years research and theory in psychologyhave been based on studies conducted primarily in Westerntechnological societies. There is growing concern that the basicprinciples of the discipline may not apply in other cultural contexts.The course will consider the historical roots of studying culture inpsychology and related disciplines, the socialization of infants andyoung children into the practices and routines of the culture, andevolutionary, developmental and cultural influences on the buildingand maintaining of human relationships. Varieties of experiencesand practices related to mental and physical health that exist in thecultures of the world will also be considered. The course willprovide a comprehensive review of contemporary research findingsand theoretical viewpoints as the many facets of this fast-growingdiscipline of psychology are explored.
