a word from the editor There isn’t much talk of five-year strategic planning at the moment. Events of the last year have demonstrated the futility of planning moves on a chess board whilst the very rules of the game are being found wanting: staying in the game, let alone winning, has become the objective for many players. There has never been a greater need to engage the collective brilliance of minds across global organisations in strategic conversations such as those that underpin many of the client stories within this edition. Many readers might currently feel that their career plans are bottom of the agenda for boards and busy HR departments. But, to quote President Obama’s words at his inauguration: “Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week, last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished.” It’s smart organisations that realise this and focus on the retention of their best people, as our lead article on Talent Management explains. Economic and financial news plus rising unemployment are currently painting a very dismal picture: life in organisations is certainly tough at the moment. But what is really going on behind the headlines? What is it like for a leader at the coal face just now? We share our current research of what’s happening ‘in the thick of it’. Is the current financial and economic crisis pushing issues of sustainability lower down the agenda? Sustainable practice can also mean better profits, as outlined in the article about the Ashridge InterfaceRAISE collaboration. Cost, as well as sustainability issues, is prompting an increasing number of organisations to opt for virtual working, paying attention to the need to invest in the development of virtual leaders, as illustrated in the work with Danfoss.
