Alonzo And Naomi Nicodemus
Named Honory Alumni of ICU
Story by Terry A. Taylor
Parents grumble today about putting
one or two children through college.
Between 1929 and 1948 Alonzo and
Naomi Nicodemus of Atwood, IN, put
all eight of their kids through Indiana
Central College.
Saturday May 17th the 91 year old
retired minister and his wife were
named honorary alumni of the college
at the annual alumni day activities.
Not a year went by between 1929
and 1948 without a "Nick" on campus.
Daniel, Wendell, Elsie, Waldo, Kathryn,
Ruth, Alonzo and Lois literally kept the
campus going during those years.
Though there were a few scholar-
ships, and some financial help from
their parents, the kids had to work
their way through college. One of the
girls was secretary to the president of
the college. One of her brothers took
care of hte grounds at ICC, while an-
other was cook.
One summer Daniel, the oldest son,
was given a piece of land to farm. He
raised potatoes and sold them to the
college that fall to help pay his tuition.
Even though tuition averaged only
about $100 a semester those days, put-
ting four boys and four girls through
college in the middle of the Depression
was no easy iob.
Still, all eight of the Nicks went on
to become teachers after graduation.
Today, Dan is a teacher in Blooming-
ton, CA, Wendell is a teacher in Fort
Wayne, Elsie (who taught for many
years) is now a housewife in Northern
Indiana. Waldo is a missionary in
Pueblo, Mexico. Kathryn teaches in
Royal Oak, MI, Alonzo Jr. is principal
at Crooked Creek elementary school,
and Lois is a housewife.
Ruth, Lois and Alonzo Jr. were at
the college May 17th to see their
parents honored.
Two of Alonzo and Naomi's grand
children attended the college in the
1960's and 70's.
Naomi turned to Alonzo before the
honors ceremony on Saturday and said,
"Maybe some of our great-grand chil-
dren will get to Indiana Central, do you
reckon?" He smiled and nodded.
1 What does doing unto others as
' you would have them do unto you
mean? We might all take a lesson
from Alice Eversole '62 and Glenna
Apsley '63. The two live in Decatur,
IL. They had been saving money
for some time in order to be able
to take a trip to Europe. But in-
stead of taking the trip Alice and
Glenna used the money to buy lake-
side property and turn it into a
camp for the youth of their United
Methodist Church in Decatur. The
camp is called Camp One Way and
is southwest of Decatur.
(Continued from page 11)
estimated that each farmer works from
two and one-half to five acres.
In addition to attending to health
needs, both doctors gave lectures on
preventive health care. "We told them
to wash their hands before they eat to
prevent worms and what foods to eat
to improve nutrition. Dr. Trimble de-
scribed dental care techniques," said
Dr. Hilton.
The Menomonie delegation returned
to Tegucigalpa Friday afternoon and
enioyed a "meal out" before the Hiltons
traveled by plane Saturday morning to
Miami.
Dr. Hilton said the Hondurans were
"very friendly" and many patients
brought gifts, including oranges, chick-
ens, flowers and a native drink made
from rice.
"1 have always been interested in
using my knowledge where there is a
greater need," he remarked when
asked why he devoted a week of his
vacation to this activity.
It might be added this is one way
of saying "Merry Christmas" to persons
who were so thankful for the "gifts"
they received.
The Indiana Central Alumni Lettermen held their
third annual golf outing June 17 at the Golf Club of
Prestwick near Brownsburg. Over seventy former
athletes participated in the event, termed by club
officers as "our finest and most enjoyable outing to
date." 1961 grad Don Bisesi, club pro at Prestwick
served as host for the event which was won by Morris
Masten, '56, with a score of 71. An awards banquet
followed the golf outing. At left is Rick Reasoner.
