FERRARI TRENTINO - ALTO ADIGE, ITALY “The history of a wine lies in the history of the soil that nourishes the vines.” In 1902, after several years studying winemaking and viticulture in France, Giulio Ferrari decided to challenge his French counterparts with his winemaking skills on his own land. In the process, he created a masterpiece. The leadership of Casa Ferrari was passed from the founder to the Lunelli family in 1952. The names have changed, but the enthusiasm has remained the same. A century of history and Ferrari is the best selling, most recognized and most celebrated Italian spumante in the world. The year 2002 marked the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari-Lunelli hand off, and a new century has begun. In the 12th century, the Fratres Cruciferi, an order with adherents all over Europe and which remained at San Leonardo until 1656, expanded grape growing and adopted a modern approach to viticulture at the monastery. Today, the ancient monastery hospice, which once gave shelter to the destitute, is now the cellar where the wines mature in barrels. The estate has witnessed many historical events, including acting as headquarters in both world wars; first, of the high command of the Italian 29th army corps in WWI (Austria made a formal request for an armistice to be held on the grounds), and in the Second World War, of the counterespionage section of the German high command on the Italian front. Present owners the Guerrieri Gonzaga family have taken advantage of the specific terroir to create Bordeaux-inspired blended wines, under the guidance of master winemaker Carlo Ferrini and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis, who is considered to be a genuine maestro of Italian winemaking through his creation of some of Tuscany’s most influential wines from the 197:s onwards. This talented pair ensures calculated ageing—at least six months in large format Slavonian oak, then 24 months in small French oak barrels—and masterful blending of each contributing varietal. This is followed by at least one year of bottle ageing. The results are consistently nothing short of spectacular. ALTESINO TUSCANY, ITALY Altesino is a highly regarded, world class winery situated northeast of Montalcino and covering an area of approximately 64 hectares. The vineyards cover an area of approximately 27 hectares, divided into three different sub zones called Altesino, La Velona and Montosoli. The grape variety Sangiovese di Montalcino makes up the largest part of the vineyards, as it is used for Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and Palazzo Altesi. Altesino has always been determined to produce wines of the highest quality possible; thus, the aging requirements for Brunello di Montalcino are even more stressed in the Altesino cellars.
