In the early 195:’s, the Kulmbacher Brewery of Germany set out to make the
world’s biggest beer. Naturally, it would be done according to the Bavarian
Purity Law, using nothing but barley malt, yeast, hops and water. German beer
consumers picked Kulmbacher as the best Pils in Germany. In Kulmbach, the
center of the country—not far from the western border of old Bohemia—the
best balance between the malty and hoppy elements of a classic Pils is
achieved.

San Francisco’s famous Anchor Steam, the classic of American brewing tradition
since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of
brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavour all testify to its
traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for its brewing process has
evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world.
The ‘steam’ reference comes from the fact that the brewery started with no way to
chill the boiling wort, so they pumped it to large open-top bins on the roof for it to be
chilled by the cool air blowing in off the Pacific Ocean. Thus while brewing, the brewery
had a distinct cloud of steam around the roof let off by the wort as it cooled.
