Rm. 119The Technical Programs Division offers a variety of programs in vocational and technical education leading toAssociate of Applied Science degrees. The focus of the programs is to provide students with the expertise necessary foremployment in today’s complex economy. Qualified instructors, using the latest technology, introduce students to theknowledge and skills business and industry currently seek in potential employees. Each associate degree program alsocontains a general education component that emphasizes written and oral communication, mathematics skills and socialawareness. Students interested only in gaining basic training in vocational areas can take advantage of severalcertificate programs offered by the Technical Programs Division. The programs normally can be completed in onecalendar year.Students successfully finishing one of these programs should possess the basic skills required for entry-levelemployment in that particular occupational field.Additional Educational OpportunitiesLamar State College-Port Arthur is a Microsoft IT Academy and a Cisco Networking Academy. Courses within theAssociate of Applied Science degree program in Computer Information Systems prepare students to obtain Microsoft,Cisco, and CompTIA (A+ and Network+) certifications. Additional information about these certifications is availablefrom the Office of Technical Programs.Most students perceive a technical education as an end in itself because it satisfies their immediate career objectives.Later, however, many of these same individuals become interested in additional education.Guarantee of Job CompetencyThe College makes certain guarantees to its students who earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree or Certificatesof Completion in technical education programs.If a graduate is judged by his/her employer as lacking in technical job skills that are identified as exit competenciesfor the degree program, the graduate will be provided up to nine tuition-free semester hours of additional skill trainingby the College.Certain conditions apply. Box 310, Port Arthur, Texas 77641(409) 984-6390Courses that meet General Education Requirementsfor Associate of Applied Science DegreesAll A.A.S. degree plans include at least five general education courses.Each plan must contain a minimum of one course selected from each of three categories: humanities/fine arts, naturalsciences/mathematics and social/behavioral sciences. Most plans specify that students must complete certain generaleducation courses for the degree. However, some plans allow students to select electives from one or more generaleducation category.
