Page | 47Long-time <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>State</strong> educator Mavis Triebelearns prestigious 2012 Minnie Piper AwardMavis Triebel, who is celebrating her 25 th year as an educatorat <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong>-<strong>Port</strong> <strong>Arthur</strong>, has been awarded theprestigious Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Piper Professorrecognition for 2012.Triebel, a government professor in the Liberal ArtsDepartment at <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>State</strong>, is one of 10 across the state of Texaswho earned the annual recognition that includes a gold pin and a$5,000 honorarium. The award is among the most sought-after bycollege and university educators in the state of Texas. She washonored during a reception Wednesday at the Carl ParkerMultipurpose Center with members of the <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>State</strong> facultyand her family on hand.The Piper Foundation, headquartered in San Antonio, wasestablished in 1958 and annually recognizes 10 Texas professorsfor outstanding academic, scientific and scholarly achievementand dedication in the field of teaching. Each two- and four-yearcollege and university may submit one nominee each year. Aselection committee from the academic community reviewsnominations and choose the professors to be honored.“I’ve worked with at least five Piper Professors at two othercolleges and know several others pretty well,” Dr. Gary Stretcher,Vice President for Academic Affairs at <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>State</strong>, said. “Eachof those people truly possesses accomplishments and attributesthat have set them apart. Mavis is no exception to that. Mavishas never indicated an interest to be a department chair or dean.Teaching, working with students, and promoting this college areher passions.”Other schools with Piper Professors this year include theUniversity of Houston, Texas A&M University, the University ofTexas at Austin, Texas <strong>State</strong> University-San Marcos, theUniversity of Texas-El Paso, Sam Houston <strong>State</strong> University, theUniversity of Texas at San Antonio, McLennan Community <strong>College</strong>, andthe University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.Triebel has been active for many years as a member, officer andpresident of the campus faculty senate. She has chaired every significant faculty committee on the campus.”Mavis and her husband, Walter Harry, a retired chemical engineer, have three daughters, three granddaughters andone great-granddaughter.“I teach for the love of sharing and having a life that is fulfilled,” she said. “Teaching is exciting, with every day newand a challenge. Students are a stimulant and allow me to grow mentally every day.”
