April 8, 2012 Easter Sunday Page ThirteenON A STORY, THE STORY, AND EASTER (A FIFTY‐FIVE WORD LOVE STORY)Copyright 2012 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com)So I’m taking a creative writing class these days at theNewberry Library. As I mentioned here not long ago, my wifesigned me up for the eight‐week session as a Valentine’s Day gift (Itold her a couple of years back that I’d like to try my hand at fictionsomeday, and now she’s called my hand). All writing is creativewriting, certainly, as two friends reminded me when I was fictionfrettingbefore the class began, and the Newberry class is not afiction‐writing class per se, but like Gail in her thoughtful giftgiving,I see this as an opportunity for me to stretch my personalessay wings. Heck. I need to see if I can even get my feet off theground in this brave new genre/world.The good news is, I have a story in mind. Yeah. It’s aboutan adulterous workaholic who dies on the table following a caraccident, learns a few things about death‐‐and life‐‐during a guardianangel‐guided, Dante‐esque tour of heaven, purgatory, and hell, and ultimately is brought back into this world, changed. The badnews is, I have no idea how to write it. Oh, I can write. On my gooddays, anyway. After all, I’ve written two non‐fiction books (one waseven published), and countless essays and poems. Additionally, this weekly column is now in its sixteenth year. But I’ve never hadto‐‐you know‐‐make things up. I just retell stories that have alreadyhappened. Write fiction? Scary. But, of course, that’s where the class comes in. My instructor’sname is Brooke Bergan, and with an MA and a PhD increative writing from UIC and serious publication cred, she knowsof what she speaks. She’s given me some solid advice already onmy own work, and I’m also learning from the feedback she givesmy classmates, writerly souls all who know the thrill‐‐and agony‐‐ofthe blank page. This past week in class she drew a triangle on theboard and discussed the “arc of the story,” explaining that all goodstories begin with an inciting incident or series of incidents thatlead to a climax and a turning point/resolution. This made me thinkof the greatest story ever told (with or without the movie), andhere we are, a few days later, at the empty tomb.I speculated right there in class that the inciting incidentof the Jesus story might be Christ’s birth, the climax, the cross, andthe turning point, the Resurrection. But as I was pondering this,Brooke shifted gears and introduced the idea of writing love storiesin fifty‐five words or less. I’ve never heard of this before, but Iguess it’s a big thing in creative writing circles. Hmmmm. I havechapters and chapters unwritten in getting my protagonist throughthe afterlife and back to the here‐and‐now, but if you’re interested,I’ve got a much shorter piece in the meantime, entitled(fittingly), Fifty‐Five Word Love Story. Per the prophet, “The virginshall be with child…” Jesus grew in wisdom, speaking of love in hisFather’s house, living love out in the world. Troubling stuff, apparently.“Crucify him!” the crowds shouted. He took the nails, but lifeprevailed. “I make all things new,” he said. And by God, he did.Happy Easter.Support StaffMrs. Dorota Gołda, Parish SecretarySr. Bernadetta Gościniak, Administrative AssistantMs. Elizabeth Ceisel-Mikowska, Bulletin EditorLiturgicalMrs. Betty Hotcaveg, Lector CoordinatorDeacon Irv Hotcaveg, Coordinator of Eucharistic Ministers &Ministers of CareMs. Jane Lohrmann, Homebound Ministers of Care SchedulerParish CouncilMrs. Sophie Kass—President, Mrs. Mary Bucaro, Mr. Stan Mastalerz,Mr. Antonio Supan, Violet Del Vecchio, Tony Mangiaracina, HerbertMarros, Elzbieta Kata, Jan Bobek, and Rob Heidelbauer .ExOfficio Members: Dr. Lucine Mastalerz , Sr. Anna StrycharzParish Finance CommitteeMr. Tom Bucaro-Chairperson, Fr.
