It raises the Eucharist above allthe sacraments as "the perfection of the spiritual lifeand the end to which all the sacraments tend. In themost blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "the body andblood, together with the soul and divinity, of our LordJesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly,really, and substantially contained." "This presence iscalled ‘real'—by which is not intended to exclude theother types of presence as ifthey could not be ‘real' too,but because it is presence inthe fullest sense: that is tosay, it is a substantial presenceby which Christ, Godand man, makes himselfwholly and entirely present.1375 It is by the conversionof the bread and wineinto Christ's body and bloodthat Christ becomes presentin this sacrament. TheChurch Fathers strongly affirmedthe faith of theChurch in the efficacy of theWord of Christ and of theaction of the Holy Spirit tobring about this conversion. Thus St. John Chrysostomdeclares:It is not man that causes the things offered to becomethe Body and Blood of Christ, but he who was crucifiedfor us, Christ himself. The priest, in the role ofChrist, pronounces these words, but their power andgrace are God's. This is my body, he says. This wordtransforms the things offered.And St. Ambrose says about this conversion:Be convinced that this is not what nature has formed,but what the blessing has consecrated. The power ofthe blessing prevails over that of nature, because by theblessing nature itself is changed. . . . Could not Christ'sword, which can make from nothing what did not exist,change existing things into what they were not before?It is no less a feat to give things their originalnature than to change their nature1376 The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholicfaith by declaring: "Because Christ our Redeemer saidthat it was truly his body that he was offering under thespecies of bread, it has always been the conviction ofthe Church of God, and this holy Council now declaresagain, that by the consecration of the bread and winethere takes place a change of the whole substance ofthe bread into the substance of the body of Christ ourLord and of the whole substance of the wine into thesubstance of his blood. This change the holy CatholicChurch has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation."1377 The Eucharistic presenceof Christ begins at the momentof the consecration and enduresas long as the Eucharistic speciessubsist. Christ is presentwhole and entire in each of thespecies and whole and entire ineach of their parts, in such away that the breaking of thebread does not divide Christ.1378 Worship of the Eucharist.In the liturgy of the Mass weexpress our faith in the realpresence of Christ under thespecies of bread and wine by,among other ways, genuflectingor bowing deeply as a sign of adoration of the Lord."The Catholic Church has always offered and still offersto the sacrament of the Eucharist the cult of adoration,not only during Mass, but also outside of it, reservingthe consecrated hosts with the utmost care,exposing them to the solemn veneration of the faithful,and carrying them in procession.1379 The tabernacle was first intended for the reservationof the Eucharist in a worthy place so that itcould be brought to the sick and those absent, outsideof Mass. As faith in the real presence of Christ in hisEucharist deepened, the Church became conscious ofthe meaning of silent adoration of the Lord presentunder the Eucharistic species. It is for this reason thatthe tabernacle should be located in an especially worthyplace in the church and should be constructed insuch a way that it emphasizes and manifests the truthof the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.To be continued...

Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com)Today’s Gospel passage from Luke opens with theapostles asking of Jesus something that perhaps we have allasked of him over the years in one fashion or another: “Increaseour faith.” But Jesus doesn’t exactly respond to the apostles’directive. Instead--as he often does--our Lord gives a slant response.It touches on the request, but it doesn’t hit it head-on,and in truth, I’ve thought about these words of Jesus more thanonce in my life when I was particularly leaning on God and hisomnipotence. “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,”Jesus tells his followers, “you would say to this mulberry tree,‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”What a great visual image! And having climbed a few in myday, I know mulberry trees.Many years ago I was flying home from somewhereand ended up sitting next to a young woman on the plane. In mymemory, she was connecting to somewhere else beyond Chicago,but she had no job, no contacts, no plan. All she had wasthe notion that it was time for her to start her life over again,along with an abiding faith in God that everything would workout for her in her new home, wherever this turned out to be. Iquestioned her about her lack of details, but with expectant eyesand voice, she assured me that God would provide for her. Iremember thinking at the time that either she had the kind offaith I could only dream about, or she was an idiot. I prayed for his general comfort andpeace, but I also swung for the fences, and it went somethinglike this: “Jesus, please grant my father comfort and peace thisday, and if you’re inclined, please grant him the big-bang miracle.Please cure him. Please let him wake up tomorrow withevery trace of Parkinson’s Disease gone, and let him live out hisdays in health and sunshine.” It sounds good on paper, and itsounded good in my head back then, but here’s the thing. I neverreally thought it’d happen. I had faith enough to know that itcould happen, of course, but not faith enough to know--to deepdownbelieve--that it would happen. And it didn’t.God knows the world is a mess these days, just likeHabakkuk knew it millennia back. “How long, O Lord?” theprophet calls out in the first reading. “I cry for help, but you donot listen! I cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not intervene…”In any number of contexts, this cry could be our veryown. And how does God answer? By telling the prophet that thepeace he seeks will come in its own time, then by leaving Habakkukwith this thought: “The rash one has no integrity, but thejust one, because of his faith, shall live.” How do we gain infaith? How do we uproot the mulberry tree and plant it in thesea? Indeed, how do change the stars? I don’t know, but if JohnPaul II was right--if faith leads us beyond ourselves and directlyto God--then the apostles were clearly on to something. Increaseour faith, Jesus.
