www.thebugle.eu ○ THE BUGLE ○ DECEMBER 2012LOCAL NEWS ♦5Remembrance Daycelebrations bringtwo commmunitiestogetherThis month, expats across the region joined their Frenchcompatriots to remember those who died fighting duringthe First World War. Every commune in France has a warmemorial for those who have died in the ine of duty.Pictured above is retired Colonel J P Wright, along withMonsieur Eric Loubeyre, mayor of the commune of Saint-Martin-le-Mault, taken at the village war memorial. Thelocals were not only appreciative of the participation of an exservicemanfrom across the Channel, but were apparently alsoquite taken with his kilt! ■Limoges shopkeepers threaten togo 'the full monty' in fight againstChristmas Sunday trade restrictionAgroup of businessowners from Limogesare preparing torun naked throughthe streets of the region's capitalin protest against a rule thatis stopping them from openingtheir shops on Sunday 23rd December. The mayor of Limogeshas stipulated that Sundaytrading will only be allowedon 16th December and not theSunday before Christmas.Jean-Marc Renaudie, a jewelleryshop owner and one of73 signatories of a petitionagainst the ruling, summed upthe mood amongst the group.“In the end, I said to myselfthat only being allowed to openon Sunday 16th December wasno more ridiculous than runningnaked through Limoges.”“Besides the commercial aspect,”continued the irate shopkeeper,“there is also the needto have a vibrant city centre. What on earth are people whocome to Limoges for the holidaysgoing to think?!”But will they really followthrough with their threat to runnaked through the streets? “Iam not a unionist, nor am I anudist, but I think somethinghas got to be done,” said MrRenaudie.Jean-Michel Gillot, whoruns a bookshop in Limoges, said that while he was happyto sign the petition, he wouldpersonally be keeping his t-shirt on. “The Sunday beforeChristmas is a huge day for us.The image of the town centreis also at stake. Besides that,I have 18 employees who activelywant to work that daybecause they get paid double.”At the time of going to press, the mayor's office was stillinsisting that there will be notrading on Sunday 23rd December.■La Creuse is unimpressed by European woesThe Limousin is one of the poorer regions of France, and La Creuse is the poorest department in that region. For an area beset byproblems of unemployment and depopulation for more than just the last few years, do its residents really care about the wider Europeanfinancial crisis? If a recent protest in Guéret is any indication... then no.In November, a series of protests took place in towns and cities across the country against the current austerity measures being pushedthrough by European governments in response to expanding budget deficits. A call to arms was raised by all the major French unions tolet the government know that the beleaguered population had endured enough. In Guéret, the capital of a department with over 120,000 residents, this call was answered by a mere 80 people!! It would appear thatthe Creusois have enough problems of their own, without worrying about the European economy. ■CARREFOUR BOIS LIMOUSINOrder your winter firewood todayAll wood is stored under cover and cleaned before deliveryOak, Beech, Hornbeam - Logs of 50, 33 & 25 cmHome delivery loose or palleted - depts 23/87www.chauffagebois-limousin.com05 55 63 72 45 / 06 76 05 81 38(8h30-12h & 14h-18h)20211438CC1243WOODEN WINDOWS AND DOORSTop quality productsat veryaffordable prices !Wooden windows and doorsAluminium clad windowsSliding glass and Bi-fold doorsSolar windowsFrench doors and garage doorsInternal and external doorsFor an electronic brochure, please email: aston@albo.czORFor a free quotation, contact Mark on: 07 86 95 18 90 (French mob)www.albo.cz/english
