IntroductionSignal transmissionThe ideal signal transmission of a base station isshaped like a ring, i.e., so that the registeredhandsets can be the same distance away fromthe base station in all directions without thewireless signal being interrupted. However, the transmission is influenced by variousenvironmental conditions. For example, obstacles such as walls or metal doors canimpede the wireless signals or interfere withtheir even transmission. You should investigate the actual conditionsthat the planned wireless network will be subjectedto by measuring the signal transmissionof the measuring base station at appropriatepositions.CapacityThe capacity of the cells must be large enough to guarantee that the subscribers can bereached in high-density traffic. A cell is at full capacity when the number of connectionsrequired for each base station is larger than the number of possible connections.A Gigaset N720 IP PRO can manage eight connections simultaneously when operated innarrowband mode (£Narrowband mode, page 49). In broadband mode, four simultaneousconnections are possible (£Broadband mode, page 47).There are two options for increasing the capacity:u Reducing the distance between the base stations. This means that the cells overlap more, givingthe subscriber access to the base stations ofthe neighbouring cells. This results in a moreeven wireless quality. However, this can resultin considerable installation costs for an existingsystem.u Installing parallel base stations. The cell size remains generally constant butthe number of possible connections increases.Installing the base stations close to oneanother means that the additional assemblycosts are low, but a minimum distance must beobserved between the base stations (£Technicalconditions, page 11).To keep the costs for the devices and for theinstallation and maintenance low, as few base stations as possible should be installed.6VoIPon www.voipon.co.uk sales@voipon.co.uk Tel: +44 (0)1245 808195 Fax: +44 (0)1245 808299
