Parks & Recreation Plan Update | 2013Shared Use Paths AlongRoadwaysPay special attention to the entrance/exit of the pathas bicyclists may continue to travel on the wrongside of the street.DescriptionA shared use path allows for two-way, off-street bicycle useand also may be used by pedestrians, skaters, wheelchairusers, joggers and other non-motorized users. These facilitiesare frequently found in parks, along rivers and beaches, and in greenbelts or utility corridors where there are fewconflicts with motorized vehicles.Along roadways, these facilities create a situation where aportion of the bicycle traffic rides against the normal flowof motor vehicle traffic and can result in wrong-way ridingwhere bicyclists enter or leave the path. The AASHTO Guide for the Development of BicycleFacilities generally recommends against the developmentof shared-use paths directly adjacent to roadways.Guidance• 8 feet is the minimum allowed for a two-way bicyclepath and is only recommended for low traffic situations.• 10 feet is recommended in most situations and will beadequate for moderate to heavy use.• 12 feet is recommended for heavy use situations withhigh concentrations of multiple users such as joggers, bicyclists, rollerbladers and pedestrians. A separatetrack (5’ minimum) can be provided for pedestrian use.W11-15, W16-9Pin advance ofcross street stopsignCrossings shouldbe stop or yieldcontrolled• Bicycle lanes should be provided as an alternate (moretransportation-oriented) facility whenever possible.5-10 | Recommendations
