PROGRAMS<strong>Recreation</strong>al preferences should guide thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> programs, cultural resources, <strong>and</strong>facilities. <strong>Apex</strong> is a very active community <strong>and</strong> residentswould like to see exp<strong>and</strong>ed program <strong>of</strong>ferings tosupport their interests. After each programmingperiod, an assessment should be conducted to gaugeinterest <strong>and</strong> inform adjustments. Evaluation mayinclude: class schedules, number <strong>of</strong> participants,frequency <strong>of</strong> class cancellations, feedback regardinginstructors, <strong>and</strong> general suggestions for improvement.This will maintain an open dialogue between residents<strong>and</strong> the Department, ensuring flexibility <strong>and</strong> satisfyingdem<strong>and</strong>.Based upon current interests <strong>and</strong> program needs, the<strong>Town</strong> should do the following to exp<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> improveprograms:IMMEDIATE NEEDS (0-2 YEARS)• Create a strategic marketing plan to ensureresidents are aware <strong>of</strong> program variety <strong>and</strong>locations, <strong>and</strong> have an opportunity to makerecommendations on future <strong>of</strong>ferings.• Improve the website so that it is easy to findprograms by topic, facility type, <strong>and</strong> location.• Exp<strong>and</strong> special events programming, such asconcerts, movies, <strong>and</strong> family friendly activities.• Examine partnership opportunities to celebratethe <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Apex</strong> <strong>and</strong> its residents, such asinstalling work by artists in community spaces.• Provide programs for underserved age groups:• Youth <strong>and</strong> teens;• Seniors;• Adults (18-54) who may need familyoriented support, such as childcareor activities parents <strong>and</strong> children canparticipate in simultaneously.• Hire or assign a staff person to serve as a <strong>Parks</strong><strong>and</strong> <strong>Recreation</strong> planner for <strong>Apex</strong>. This personwill help oversee park, greenway, <strong>and</strong> openspace elements, serving as a liaison betweenBasketball courts are great for programs as well as pick-up games.6-5 | Section 6

Links mayinclude:• Transportation <strong>of</strong>ferings (bus, ride shares,carpools, <strong>and</strong> shuttle services);• Senior resources;• Programs <strong>and</strong> resources for specialpopulations;• Teen programs;• Accessible facilities.NEAR TERM NEEDS (3-5 YEARS)• As more indoor space becomes available, planfor additional classes in areas such as health <strong>and</strong>wellness, fitness, cooking, gardening, <strong>and</strong> arts<strong>and</strong> crafts.• Hire a senior staff member who is qualifiedin Therapeutic <strong>Recreation</strong> to help shapeprogramming <strong>and</strong> resources for seniors <strong>and</strong>special populations.• Exp<strong>and</strong> program <strong>of</strong>ferings for underserved agegroups listed above as space becomes available.LONG TERM NEEDS (5-7 YEARS)Provide additional programs (type <strong>and</strong>/or frequency)as space <strong>and</strong> staff become available. Programs listedby residents were:• Yoga, cooking, martial arts, gardening/community gardens, dancing (several varietieslisted), ropes course/team building, babysitting,CPR, First Aid, bridge <strong>and</strong> other card games,Zumba, <strong>and</strong> Pilates.CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITYGREENWAYS<strong>Greenways</strong> are the highest priority for <strong>Apex</strong>residents. They desire easy access to greenways fromtheir homes, <strong>and</strong> want to be able to travel to parks,commercial centers, work, <strong>and</strong> schools on a system <strong>of</strong>well connected paths <strong>and</strong> bicycle facilities. Connectingto commercial districts <strong>and</strong> parks rated highly in thesurvey. Linking residents to all <strong>of</strong> these key areas canhave a positive impact on the health <strong>and</strong> wellness <strong>of</strong>residents, especially children. As such, the followingrecommendations are made to improve communityconnectivity:IMMEDIATE NEEDS (0-2 YEARS)• Take steps for the feasibility study, acquisition,design, <strong>and</strong> construction <strong>of</strong>:• American Tobacco Trail (ATT) connections,including:• Jaycee Park to Downtown (1,500 LF);• Kelly Road Park to <strong>Apex</strong> Nature Park(1.2 miles);• <strong>Apex</strong> Nature Park to AmericanTobacco Trail (2.3 miles).• Middle Creek Greenway connection toensure safe crossing at the future 540.• White Oak Creek Greenway through <strong>Apex</strong><strong>and</strong> to the ATT, working in collaboration withthe <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cary.• Complete separately, or in conjunction, a bicyclemaster plan <strong>and</strong> pedestrian master plan toprovide an interconnected system <strong>of</strong> facilities(including routes, bike lanes, shared use lanes,bicycle parking facilities, sidewalks, intersectiontreatments, <strong>and</strong> signalization) <strong>and</strong> prioritize6-6 | Action Steps
