It'sreally a review of the music (which, after all, iswhat's important) and quite informative forsomeone like myself who knows nothing aboutABBA. Karl French writes well and with dryhumour. The book outlines the history of eachmember of the band and how they cametogether. Their background does affect theirpersonalities, marriages, and family relationshipswithin the group.Benny and Bjorn met in 1966. Benny started outwith The Hep Stars. Bjorn played with TheHootenanny Singers. ABBA's career waslaunched when they won the Eurovision songcontest in 1974 with Waterloo. They went on tosell more records than anyone except ElvisPresley and The Beatles. Some fine musiciansplayed with ABBA. Lasse Wellander and JanneSchaffer laid down guitar tracks. RutgerGunnarsson played bass. Ola Brunkert playeddrums.The group was managed by Stig Anderson (norelation to Benny). Michael Tretow served astheir perennial engineer. Later recording wasdone at Polar Studios, and the company formedto handle their business was known as PolarMusic International. Their records werereleased by Atlantic. Benny and Bjorn went onto collaborate on two musicals. They wrote Chesswith Tim Rice.I found the book interesting but a few too manydissections of the music, for my liking. However,for someone interested in the music theory andhistory, it is more than just tabloid tales. Somethings were surprising: Abba had a large numberof closet fans, including members of the SexPistols. Mamma Mia the movie and musical hasintroduced Abba songs to a whole new generationand for this reason alone, they will endure foryears to come.Happy reading,Amanda Mclaughlin
News from the CommitteeThe committee meets once a month,usually at Austin Street, but for our Marchmeeting we had a ‘virtual’ meeting on theinternet.WebsiteWaiting for our new website to takeshape.MaintenanceA plumber has now been in twice to fixthe urinals, looks as if the solenoidrequires replacing, and to install atempering valve in the hot water systemto ensure that the temperature of the hotwater from the taps does not exceed 50-60°C. The storm drain out back has alsobeen unblocked, rain water was seepingthrough to the ladies’ toilet. Fire-fightingequipment requires an update and Sorenwill organise.EventsNo new events discussed. TheScandinavian Folk Festival on Sunday 28March 2010 is generating a lot of interestand we’re hoping to attract many visitors.MoneyThe treasurer presented the accounts forFebruary for approval. Costs were on theincrease, but the overall result of $2,000+was satisfactory. Lone is currentlyentering the accounts from July 2009 onQuickBooks to enable audit to occur in aquick and efficient manner. Vivian is thecontact to the auditors.Membership7 new members came on board inFebruary/March. Brilliant! It’s vital thatthe Club gets new members and retainsold members. Soren is following up on afew old members, who haven’t paid theirmembership fees for 2009/2010 yet.Hall HireThe hall is getting increasingly popular,we even have a booking for 2011.Saturday is in fierce demand and bookingsare building up which is good, but it’stime-consuming to meet, greet, show andtell and then hand over key, checkcleaning, issue cheque for deposit heldetc. Two French clubs will be using theclub for events in April and May and alatin dance club is also interested. Twoweddings and an engagement party inMarch. Norwegian Club is starting up amonthly play group. More interest now asa low-key concert venue as well.NewsNo news from the Gambling CommunityBenefit Fund about funding for the kitchenrenovation. There is still hope though.
