Professor Helen MilroyDirector, Centre for Aboriginal Medical <strong>and</strong> Dental Health, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry <strong>and</strong> HealthSciences, The University of Western AustraliaHelen is a descendant of the Palyku people of the Pilbara region of Western Australia.She is a Consultant Child <strong>and</strong> Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Bentley Family Clinic <strong>and</strong>Director for the Centre for Aboriginal Medical <strong>and</strong> Dental Health at The University ofWestern Australia. Helen is a Past President of the Australian Indigenous Doctors’Association, current member of the National Advisory Council on Mental Health,Headspace, the National Youth Mental Health initiative, Aboriginal & Torres StraitIsl<strong>and</strong>er Healing Foundation Development Team, the Western Australian IndigenousImplementation Board <strong>and</strong> the Australian Health Ethics Committee.Future directions of (Indigenous) medical education – workforce implicationsIn this keynote address Helen will reflect on the journey we have taken in Indigenous medical educationover recent years <strong>and</strong> look forward to the realisation of a truly culturally safe health care system. The shiftfrom a minimal, or complete absence of Indigenous health teaching <strong>and</strong> learning in medical courses tothe implementation of more comprehensive approaches that prepare graduates to work collaborativelywith Indigenous people in a collective journey towards better health <strong>and</strong> health care for all is a great stepforward. However, we need to remember that our job does not stop there. Our next step, as educators <strong>and</strong>practitioners, is to consider how we support our new graduates into the future so they are able to continuetheir journeys.Professor Tim WilkinsonProfessor in Medicine <strong>and</strong> Associate Dean (Medical Education) at the University of Otago, ChristchurchTim is a Professor in Medicine <strong>and</strong> Associate Dean (Medical Education) at the Universityof Otago, Christchurch. He Chairs the Otago Faculty of Medicine Curriculum Committee,<strong>and</strong> the Faculty’s assessment committee. He is a member of the Australian MedicalCouncil’s Expert Advisory Panel on assessment. He is immediate past president ofANZAME, the association for health professional education. His research interests arein medical education, particularly assessment <strong>and</strong> workplace learning. He is a keen, butmediocre, double bass player <strong>and</strong> enjoys playing jazz <strong>and</strong> in orchestras.
