Ms Bernadette JonesMs Bernadette Jones (Ngāti Apa, Ngā Wairiki) trained as a registered nurse, <strong>and</strong>practiced in Australia <strong>and</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong> in Cardiothoracic, Intensive Care <strong>and</strong>Community Nursing. She progressed to clinical nurse educator before joining theDepartment of Medicine, University of Otago 2003 as Senior Research Nurse onepidemiological studies. She has completed a Diploma of Public Health <strong>and</strong> currentlyleads qualitative research exploring asthma amongst Māori families, <strong>and</strong> lectures forthe Hauora Māori curiculum.Teaching <strong>and</strong> learning, assessment, evaluation <strong>and</strong> curriculum: Griffith UniversitySchool of Medicine, Indigenous health teaching <strong>and</strong> learningDr Jane MacLeodLecturer Primary Health Care, Griffith University, General PractitionerAbstractTeaching, learning <strong>and</strong> assessment in Indigenous health at Griffith University has been integrated into thecourse <strong>and</strong> directed by specific learning objectives, consistent with the CDAMS Indigenous Health CurriculumFramework. It has been informed by GUMURRII (Griffith University Murri <strong>and</strong> Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>er) Unit <strong>and</strong>Griffith University Aboriginal Elder in Residence, Aunty Delmae Barton.Indigenous community members <strong>and</strong> community-controlled health services <strong>and</strong> other Indigenousorganisations have been engaged to provide students with education, while HOPE4HEALTH, a GriffithUniversity student organisation, has directed learning activities at Cherbourg. Griffith University School ofMedicine provides guidance for students <strong>and</strong> HOPE4HEALTH <strong>and</strong> supports ongoing learner-centred learning.HOPE4HEALTH is keen to promote ongoing education for young Indigenous people through a ‘health careersexpo’ at Cherbourg <strong>and</strong> through involvement at Deadly Days Festival at Kingscliff.In 2010, the School will enhance its communication skills training with a ‘Professional Communication <strong>and</strong>History’ program which will include cross-cultural communication education <strong>and</strong> role-play activities withIndigenous ‘patients’. Student visits to Yugembah Museum are also planned.Presenter: Dr Jane MacLeodJane MacLeod (MBBS FRACGP) works for Griffith University School of Medicine as alecturer in primary health care. She is general practitioner who graduated from TheUniversity of Queensl<strong>and</strong> with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1998. Shegained her Fellowship Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2007. Janeis currently completing her Certificate in Health Professional Education through GriffithUniversity. Jane is passionate about the health of Indigenous Australians <strong>and</strong> hasworked in Mt Isa, Doomadgee, Mornington Isl<strong>and</strong>, Nhulunbuy, Ntaria, Alice Springs <strong>and</strong>Ampilatwatja <strong>and</strong> is raising her Lardil daughter, Neahlan.68
