Shewill also relate fascinating facts about therole the town played in the RevolutionaryWar and about the wealthy Gilded Agefamilies who built their homes here. Afterthe tour, visit Macculloch Hall, a grand19th century mansion built by the founderof the Morris Canal that is filled withmuseum quality furniture and accessoriesand is always beautifully decorated for theholidays. Lunch is on your own at one ofthe town’s many restaurants. After lunchvisit the Morris Museum, which also willbe decked out for the season. It containsexhibits of the fine and decorative arts,costumes, textiles, toys and the naturalsciences. A special treat is the extraordinaryMusical Machines and Living Dolls exhibitthat features over 750 historic mechanicalmusical instruments and automata(mechanical figures), some dating back tothe 1800’s. The last stop is Acorn Hall, animpressive 1853 Italianate mansion whichretains 95% of its original furnishings andwill be decorated in high Victorian stylefor the Christmas season. AtSpringwood, the Roosevelt family home,you will get a glimpse of how the presidentand his family celebrated the holidays.After a complete lunch at Coppola’srestaurant (included), visit the VanderbiltMansion, a palatial Gilded Age countryhome that features original French andItalian furnishings. Sparkling trees andother elaborate Christmas decorationscapture the spirit of the season. The laststop is Wilderstein, the Queen Ann-stylemansion occupied by three generationsof the Suckley family. For over 30 yearstalented florists and designers havetransformed the home into a Christmaswonderland.
