Her early work in pop and rockmusic in the 1960’s was over shadowed byher struggle with drug abuse in the 1970’s.After a long commercial absence, she returnedlate in 1979 with the landmark album‘Broken English’. Marianne Faithfullsubsequent work, very frequently the subjectof great critical acclaim, has at timesbeen over shadowed by her personal lifehistory! With a recording career that spansover four decades, she has continuallyreinvented her musical persona, experimentingin different musical genres andcollaborating with such varied artists as -‘Angelo Badalamenti’, ‘Beck’, David Bowie’,‘Nick Cave’, ‘The Chieftains’, ‘JarvisCocker’, ‘Steve Winwood’, Rodger Walters’plus many more......Marianne began her singing career in 1964landing her first gigs as a folk singer inLondon coffee houses. She attended a‘Rolling Stones’ launch party and there metAndrew Loog Oldham ( at the time TheRolling Stones manager, the man whowent on to form The Immediate recordlabel). Her first major single release was‘As Tears Go By’ which was written byAndrew Loog Oldham, Mick Jagger andKeith Richard reaching the UK top ten.Between August 1964 to July 1965 Mariannehad four top ten hits, with her versionof ‘Yesterday’ in November ‘65 reachingno 36 in the UK charts, then in March ‘67‘Is That What I get For Loving You?’Reaching no 43. She returned to the singlescharts in November 1979 with ‘TheBallard of Lucy Jordan’ which reached no48.Late 1965 Faithfull left her then husbandJohn Dunbar (they married in 1964 producinga son together) to live with Mick Jaggerand told the ‘New Musical Express’ that“My first move was to get a Rolling Stoneas a boyfriend. I slept with three and decidedthe lead singer was the best bet”. Thisrelationship lasted into the early 1970’s, atwhich point her career went into declineuntil 1979 when she returned with a newalbum ‘Broken English’ (one of her mostcritical hailed albums). Over the years MarianneFaithful’s involvement in Mick Jaggerslife would be reflected in some of theRolling Stones best-Known songs of thatperiod (65 to 1970). Sadly during the seventiesMarianne lived on the streets ofLondon’s Soho for 2 years suffering heroinaddition and anorexia nervosa. It was duringthis period that friends tried to help, even paying for a period in a rehab centre.Severe laryngitis coupled with cocaineabuse during this period permanently alteredthe sound of her voice, leaving itcracked and lower in pitch. While the newsound was praised as ‘Whisky-soaked’ bysome critics, journalist John Jones of TheSunday Times wrote that she had‘permanently vulgarised her voice’. Now at61 and an important part of music historyMarianne Faithfull defies that old maximthat if you can remember the sixties youweren't really there......She has over the years produced an amazingcatalogue of albums, in addition to hermusic career, Marianne Faithfull has alsobeen active as an actress in theatre, televisionand films. FREE Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western issue 10 vol 5JANUARY ‘09 25FACTS ABOUT AMPLIFIERSOr did you know? Part ThreeContinued from last months issue, which you can read, if you go to backissues page on the web site. The Archetypal ‘Guitar Stack’ with twospeaker cabinets each loaded with four 12”speakers came about partly because amplifiersin the 1960’s were growing in powerfaster than loudspeakers. While ampswere hitting the 100 watt mark, speakerswere rated at more like 30 watt. To compoundthis, the criteria speaker manufacturerswere using to rate their speakerswere a world away from the actual powerlevels created by a guitarist slamming outa chord with the amp on full tilt! So, puttingeight speakers in the cabinet was the onlysafe course. Cutting the cabinet in half tocreate two 4 x 12s was just a concessionto portabillity. Before PAs were as powerfulas they are now, a very loud back line wasthe only way guitarists could be certain ofbeing heard. Hendrix used three 100 wattstacks, while Richie Blackmore was notoriousfor using modded heads that reputedto put out 280 watt each! Many musiccritics and guitarists have said that part ofthe unique Jimi Hendrix sound came fromthe particular model of Celestion speakerfitted by Marshal to it’s guitar cabinets atthe time. Hendrix roadies have sinceclaimed that they used to replace thesewith higher powered, general-purpose 70watt Rola Celestions sold to everyone frombass players to home organists. Why?They didn’t blow up so often!Never remove the earth wire from a mainsplug to cure the hum caused by an ‘Earthloop’ when other equipment is in use. Usethe ground lift switch, if your amp has one,or talk to a professional repairer. Withmoulded plugs, removing the an earth wirefrom the mains is harder than it used to be,which is just as well: it can be fatal! In the UK, all portable mains powered appliancesused commercially are legally requiredto be tested by a qualified person.Electricians, and musical equipment shopsoften offer ‘PAT’ (Portable Appliance Testing). When the equipment passes, the testerwill put a sticker on each item, showingthe date too, plus the date for the nexttesting due. Some larger venues requirethat all equipment carries these stickers -and you may not be allowed to use youramps without them, due to insurance liabilityof the venues insurance company’sterms and condition of cover. This youshould always check, as well as your ownpublic liability insurance cover, which if youhave none then joining ‘The MusiciansUnion’ offers excellent rates of cover, formembers at very competitive prices.TO ADVERTISE INTHESCRUMPY ‘n’ WESTERNTHE PRINTEDDISTRIBUTEDISSUE COVERS -BERKSHIRE * BRISTOLCORNWALL * DEVONDORSET * HAMPSHIRESOUTHGLOUCESTERSHIRESOMERSETWILTSHIREPLUS DOWNLOADABLEON THE -www.mag4livemusic.co.ukPHONE OR E-MAIL07919 315 433Scrumpynwestern@aol.comWE LOOK AFTER OURADVERTISERS
