I am a memberof a three piece tribute act, and have in thepast been in a five piece blues bands. Theproblems there are magnified many timesover. To get the act together in the firstplace it means hiring a hall or functionroom able to cope with the noise levels andbig enough to accommodate the kit. Thiscan be an expensive down time, rehearsinga set to a proficient standard to play inpublic. Not the luxury of sitting in the comfortof your own living room picking outcords. Most pubs and venues are only ableto employ single artists or duo’s under theirentertainment license, and have a maximumbudget available for artists. This fallsheavily in favour of the solo artist who candemand, and quite often get, the same feethat a five piece band can expect to divvyup! This makes a mockery of the writer ofthe article writing “What Landlord in thereright mind pays £300 - £600 for a band, maybe they should give cheaper acts achance.” I haven’t been lucky enough yetto find a landlord with £600 to pay my band, but if was in a five piece band, and washoping to make a living out of music, as thelady’s husband was, there would be a fiveway split, minus petrol, minus the tax. Iguess her husband would still be earningmore than the individual members of theband. The ‘solo’ artist usually has theJANUARY ‘09 8equivalent of a 40 piece orchestra and achoir on a backing tape, and miraculouslythis is all balanced in the wink of an eye bythe volume switch. The ‘solo’ act is readyto rumble long before the genuine bandmembers have managed to ascend twoflights of stairs with a PA system the size ofa grand piano! The lady writing about pubsdouble booking and cancelling gigs for herhusband leads me to believe he has notpaid musician union fees, to save a bit ofmoney, or he could have had their protectionover the broken contract. I cannotunderstand how the act in question has somuch trouble getting gigs. If I was a soloact I could drive ten miles in any directionand pass loads of live music venues, admittedlythey all want Karaoke machineswith a guitarist, or keyboard player crooningover it. These people moaning abouthow hard done by they have been shouldstop and think of all the short cuts theyhave taken to make a fast buck, and thinkof how the traditionalists are losing outtrying to keep music ‘LIVE’.- Name and address suppliedEditors note -“ Many thanks to both letter writers, of lastmonths and the above, both parties areknown to me, and both acts have a largefollowing in their own right, as entertainers. The Scrumpy ‘n’ Western welcome’s lettersand comments from our readers, onany subject concerning ‘LIVE MUSIC’.Just e-mail us at -Scrumpynwestern@aol.com

A very busy and popularband, always to be found in the Scrumpygig guide, and the first time I had seenthem live. They play mainly covers withtheir own slant as soon after entering theyplayed a fast ‘Mrs Robinson’, which Ithought was well delivered, as all that theyplayed was really good. During the intervalI went and spoke to bass player GerryDawson - “The band was formed in thespring of 2004 and started gigging thatsummer. We started as a 5 piece playingpop music from the 60’s and 70’s, by thebeginning of the following year the line-upbegan to change, and when in March 2005Andy joined on lead guitar/vocals from theblues band ‘The Barking Hat Stands’ Irealised that the band, as it was, was destinedto change. Later that year the femalevocalist/keyboard player and rhythm guitaristleft, so the drummer, Andy and Icarried on as a trio. Immediately, we broadenedthe repertoire to include classic rock,a little soul, rhythm ‘n’ blues plus rock ‘n’roll, as well as retaining some of the originalpop stuff. Over night the number of gigswe were playing went from 2 or 3 a monthto 2 or 3 a week. Although we have sincechanged drummers, the band has remainedthe same since September 2005until now playing between 70 - 80 gigs ayear from north of Bristol right down toRedruth in Cornwall. However, as we arealways looking to evolve musically, ‘TheGraduates’ next move is to add a femalelead singer, so we have more variety to thecurrent set and we are even consideringintroducing one or two original song’s thatwe have written over the years”. This wasa great nights entertainment, and we willbe taking another look at ‘The Graduates’later in the year, for more info go to -www.the-graduates.co.ukwww.scallys.co.uk
