Coach’s Tips• When following another vehicle in the acceleration lane, remind the new driver <strong>to</strong> keep asafe following distance. Be aware of other drivers who are merging at the same time. Whileone driver is checking <strong>for</strong> a safe gap <strong>to</strong> merge in<strong>to</strong>, the driver ahead may slow down or s<strong>to</strong>pabruptly. Maintain enough space <strong>to</strong> make an unexpected s<strong>to</strong>p.• When entering a highway from an entrance ramp, do not pull directly on<strong>to</strong> the highway. Usemost or all of the acceleration lane <strong>to</strong> adjust speed and merge safely in<strong>to</strong> a gap in the traffic.8Exiting a highwayInstructions <strong>to</strong> the learner should emphasize the proper method <strong>for</strong> exiting a highway safely.• Move in<strong>to</strong> the proper lane <strong>for</strong> exiting well in advance of the intended exit. Do not wait <strong>for</strong> thelast minute.• Signal an intention <strong>to</strong> leave the highway well be<strong>for</strong>e reaching the deceleration lane.• Do not reduce speed until the vehicle has fully entered the deceleration lane.• After entering the deceleration lane, keep the signal light on until the exiting is complete.• Slow down <strong>to</strong> the posted speed limit of the exit ramp.Stay Safe – Highways• If you miss your exit, do not s<strong>to</strong>p or back on<strong>to</strong> the highway. Instead, continue on <strong>to</strong> the nextexit or interchange and plan <strong>to</strong> return <strong>to</strong> your intended route.• Do not cross the single solid line that separates the deceleration lane of the exit with the travellanes of the highway.• Cross in<strong>to</strong> the next lane only in the areas designated by broken lines, which permit this transfer.67
