The Willow Root blossoms into NANTEN*The Willow Root, with its amazing view of the polofield and Cogon Village, is a consistent favoritedining spot for members. Now, a new concessionairecomes in to give our much loved outlet a fresh spin.Compared to other types of restaurants, Mr. ConradCalalang observed that there are not as many Japaneserestaurants in the metro. This and for the spirit oftrying something new, he took up the challenge of anew venture. Through the help of a friend and partnerRobert Yupangco “NANTEN” successfully opened itsdoors to Polo Club members on April 24, 2011.Cooks and staff constantly undergo training to enhancetheir skills and be kept abreast of the latest trends. With barely 2 months of operations, Nanten has a fullhouse during lunch and dinner. It is open daily from11:30am – 2:30pm for lunch and 6:30pm – 9:30pmfor dinner. Nanten also accommodates private functionsand has plans of reviving barbecue nights by theEast Terrace.*Nanten is a Japanese shrub, considered as a“lucky plant / flower”.The main feature of Nanten is its SushiBar open from 11:30am – 9:30pm.At present, it is especially beingenjoyed by an afternoon crowd ofyoung members and dependents. Therestaurant also offers a wide selectionof all-time Japanese favorites withmust-taste Makis. To maintain the excellent taste andquality of the food they serve, threeJapanese housewives visit Nanten forfood tasting sessions every month.Mr. Calalang stressed that it is importantfor them to preserve the original tasteof the dishes. According to him, someJapanese restaurants have adjustedtheir cooking to suit Filipino taste (abit sweeter) but for Nanten, they optto retain authenticity through a goodblend of sugar and soy sauce. Thekitchen staff, headed by a professionalJapanese chef, Kondo San, also playsa critical role in quality control andconsistency.15Food and Beverage
