Dear Fellow Members,
board year 2011-2012 is concluding in a
couple of months and i am pleased to inform
you that our Club is moving towards good
direction. The Main lounge renovation is
progressing as scheduled. if things continue
to run smoothly, we will have a bigger and
better venue in time for our annual General
Membership Meeting and election on
august 28.
F&b is also showing positive figures. Combined
revenues of the outlets, banquets and
concessionaires are up 20% compared to last
year. your continued patronage, especially in
the newly refurbished Cogon Village, is very
much appreciated. please keep on visiting the
Club and maximize the use of our facilities.
Management continues to develop and
implement systems that are convenient and
efficient. Online billing statements can now be
viewed at the Club website. To know more
about this, please turn to the announcement
section of this magazine.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
last month, the Club honored our beloved
mothers on their special day. We hope you
enjoyed the simple yet memorable celebration.
a few weeks from now, it’s our turn, fathers,
to celebrate our day. happy Father’s Day to

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESk
Dear Members,
We are well into the year of the Dragon but
the good news goes on. We have monthly and
quarterly specials (please see pp. 18-19), new
food concessionaires, and the impending launch
of our renovated 50-yr. old Main lounge.
in a week’s time, pancake house will be in full
operational capacity serving scrumptious meals at
the Tennis pavilion, which may prove a challenge
for those looking to avoid the temptation of an
indulgent reward after a hard-played set on the
court.
The renovation of the Main lounge and its
adjacent areas has inevitably resulted in the
transfer of nanten restaurant to the Drivers’
Canteen at parking 1. please bear with us during
this renovation phase as we’re working towards
providing better overall service to all our members
with these changes. nanten is expected to reopen
in June 2012.
We’re working doubly hard on improving the Main
lounge, and we do sincerely apologize especially
to our library patrons for any disturbance you
may experience during this time. Trust that we are
pushing to complete the improvements as quickly
as possible while maintaining the highest
quality workmanship.
We hope that all the Club’s moms enjoyed our
Mother’s Day treat last May 13! Dads, we’ve also

Day, so come celebrate with us this June 17!
This board year is ending in august with the
annual General Membership Meeting scheduled
on august 28, 2012. i encourage all proprietary
members to submit their proxy Forms to the Office
of the General Manager to insure a quorum.
The complete set of election materials will be
released to all proprietary members towards the
end of July or early august. all members are
invited to attend this annual meeting.

NEWS
The new Main Lounge in Progress
The Main lounge renovation project has been awarded to pampanga block builders.
Construction officially commenced on april 16, 2012. as of this writing,
work in progress is at 17%.
The saddle room is one of the adjacent areas
that will refurbished as part of the Main lounge
renovation. it will carry a new interior finish and floor
lay out with 15 person capacity to cater
small meetings/ functions.
The Mezzanine is one of the best areas in the
Main lounge. it is a perfect spot during events
where photographers can position themselves to
capture great photos. The access to Mezzanine
through a passage way in the saddle room will be
improved to make the area more accessible not only
for event personnel but even for concessionaires.
an additional storage area will be the main
improvement in the service bar of the
Main lounge. This additional space is intended
for event organizers and/or program performers.
Dressing room/ preparation area will also
be provided.

if there’s such thing as the Club aging gracefully,
that is thanks to our hardworking Grounds
Committee. The beautiful landscapes and well
kept grounds complement our continuing
renovation of the premises.
MPC presents the “ning de Vera Tree”
in honor and appreciation of more than 20 years
of dedicated work as Grounds Committee Chair,
the board of Directors and the house Committee
named the largest narra tree on the rotunda
fronting the club house as the “ning de Vera
Tree”. a brass plaque has been mounted at the
base of the tree to commemorate this honor.
Mr. De Vera also received a certificate of
recognition signed by the Club president,
Mr. roman azanza, Jr. on april 20, 2012.
Out of kindness and concern for Club members plus a
dash of inspiration from his wife, Mr. Carlos perez-rubio
designed the new hardscape near the 50-meter pool.

Mr. perez-rubio shares “I was given full range to utilise
what is available. The expectation was high despite low
or almost no budget. We only used about two bags of
cement. We never bought anything else. We just used
whatever scraps we found around the Club. We utilised
different elements of nature. The group of Batang is very
instrumental. His team is exceptional, just five or six, but
each one is integral. They are my ten other eyes. I give

Climate Change Reducing Whale Shark Sightings?
utilizing state-of-the art fish tracking monitors, the World
Wide Fund for nature philippines (WWF) is attempting
to track whale shark movements within Donsol bay. The
current spotting system banks solely on the trained eyes of
whale shark spotters, seeking shadows plying the water.
“using just your eyes can be difficult, particularly if it is
raining or overcast,” says former butanding interaction
Officer (biO) association president allan amanse. “When it
rains, the chance of a successful interaction drops.”
The new trackers utilize stationary sonar modules, which
bounce sound-waves off all solid objects. large creatures
such as whale sharks or shoals of fish can easily be made
out. The trackers also log water temperature.

Discovered by sir andrew smith off the coast of south africa
in 1828, the strikingly-patterned whale shark (rhincodon
typus) exceeds the length of your typical passenger bus and
weighs more than six adult elephants. WWF together with its
partners and the local government of Donsol are currently
conducting a host of research initiatives – from Gps satellite
tagging to photo-identification of individual sharks. results will
allow conservationists to determine local population sizes and

Currently, Donsol’s surface water temperature averages
28.3 degrees Celsius – over two degrees hotter than the
average of 26.1 degrees recorded for the 2010 season.
“Our initial findings seem to indicate that the whale sharks
are staying in deep water, possibly to avoid the heat,”
shares WWF whale shark expert Dave David. “They are also
highly migratory creatures, so it is not easy to regularly
predict their whereabouts. in the summer of 2001, very few
sightings were reported. it seems this year is similar.”
The heat is definitely having a negative effect on Donsol’s
eco-tourism industry – another example of how climate
change affects livelihoods. To sate tourists, Donsol
operators are also offering firefly and mangrove tours.

Dear Mrs. Wilson,
My name is Kim powers Matthews. i am the
daughter of billard Marci powers. sharon small
nightingale is my life-long childhood friend,
and still one of my closest friends.
as you may remember, my family spent 21
years in Manila. i was born there and finished
high school there (with sharon and patti). i
recently heard about the 100 years of the
polo Club Commemorative book and asked
our dear friends, Dito and ines borromeo,
to get me a copy. They graciously got me 5
copies. One for me, one for my Mom, and one
for each of my brothers. What a treasure!! We
have all enjoyed reading through it, examining
the pictures, and reliving our wonderful years
in Manila. The polo Club was certainly a
biG part of my childhood. learning to swim,
swimming in the races, building up the nerve
to jump, then DiVe off the high diving board,
bowling, playing badminton, and attending
little league and adult softball games were
all a big part of my childhood. Once i got old
enough i started taking horseback lessons with
seargeant [sic]. i was an avid participant in the
gymkhanas, the trail rides, the dressage and
jumping competitions and even played polo.

The book highlights all these activities and
more in such splendor. i see you were on
the editorial board, were the Club president
when the book idea initiated, and wrote the
introduction! i just want to say ThanK yOu!
What a wonderful memento that all of us will
treasure forever. i have soooo many photos
of all the events there but they are simply a
snapshot of a moment in time, whereas the
book weaves together the history of the time
and place—a time and place that was magical
and special. i will treasure my life there
always.
please pass along my deepest gratitude to
other board members and ensure they know
what a treasure they have created.
i hope you are well! My mother continues to
live a few miles from me and we get together
quite a bit. she still treasures many of her
Manila friendships and visits with everyone
who stops in Colorado!
again, thank you for your efforts on behalf of
this wonderful book.

i remember the days when the powers lived not
too far from our house in Dasmariñas Village.
as the song goes “those were the days my friend
we thought would never end". Claude used to
play the piano and sing it all the time. life was
quite simple then.

The 2012 polo season culminated on March 18 with
a befitting finale made possible in partnership with
the argentine embassy, the Chaîne de rôtisseurs and
other special event partners.
bringing back the tradition and grandeur of old
polo celebrations, members and guests attended
the president’s Cup in their most dapper look with
matching hats.
The low Goal game of round robin geared the
afternoon into action. it was an interesting showcase
of talents as the young bloods played side by side with
the seasoned players. in the end, the Orange team
beat the Green and yellow teams with a final score
of 5 goals.
MpC president roman azanza Jr. and argentine
ambassador h.e. Joaquin Daniel Otero marked the
second part of the program with their grand entrance
in Mini Cooper. The Club president gave a welcoming
remarks followed by the ceremonial salute of players
and official throw-in.

The blues of benjie Toda, Jay de Jesus, Gus aguirre,
and Jake Zobel won 12 against the reds of Jerome
hernandez, sonny borromeo, adrian Garcia, and santi
elizalde with 6, in the high Goal game of six chukkers.
The awarding ceremony was also notable as the
argentine embassy awarded Medals of appreciation to
all players and a special award to the Most Valuable
player of the season. The trophies for the winners
of the low and high Goal matches were handed by
MpC president roman azanza, Jr. and past president
Federico borromeo.
after the awarding, a parade of lavish food and
cocktails were enjoyed by all. an intimate degustation
and dinner was held for the polo players, board
Members, dignitatries, and Chaîne de rôtisseurs
representatives hosted by past president and
Mrs. Federico borromeo.

The year will not be complete without the most
anticipated activity of the equestrian community:
the annual horse show (ahs), the highlight and
culmination of all equestrian activities in the Club.
The two-day event held on March 24-25 was
organized by the equestrian association of the
philippines (eap) and the Manila polo Club (MpC)
riding school Committee.

On the first day of the competition, eight riders
participated in the Dressage Championship and the
World Jumping Challenge Category “a” (round 1 & 2)
at the Club’s Main Covered arena. The show Jumping
Competition and the continuation of the World
Jumping Challenge followed the next day at the
enrique Zobel Field.

as part of the preparation for the annual horse
show, international Grand prix rider, Mr. sebastian
“sebi” pellon-Maison conducted a show Jumping
Clinic. all horses were checked by a veterinarian
to ensure they are well and conditioned for the
competition.
international judges, Ms. alison King (Fei 4* Dressage
Judge, Fei 4* para-equestrian Dressage Judge, Fei
steward Dressage, Jumping, eventing and paraequestrian),
Mr. Vittorio barba (Fei 2* Judge), and
Mr. Minuro Osada (Fei 3* Judge) led the scoring in
Dressage while Malaysian Fei judge Mr. siraj Wahab
officiated in the show Jumping.
The event’s outcome reflects the combined efforts
and camaraderie among the riders, the riding
school Committee, and the generous sponsors:
Ms. isa pilapil who designed the event logo;
Ms. Dindin lagdameo for the design of the
invitation, banner and billboard; Ms. Mariles
Gustilo for the provision of banners; Contel
Communications inc. for the two-way radios; and
Gymboree for the art materials used in the on-thespot
painting contest (congratulations to budding
artist Frances rocha for winning the contest).
The rider’s loot bag was equally a delight. inside
the bags were Fila outdoor shoes from Mr. butch
albert, ahs commemorative shirts from Ms. Karen
Concepcion, towels from Ms. Marielo Guerrero, and
baller iD bracelets from Ms. nina herrera-huang.

held leg 1 of the national squash
Tournament on april 16 to 21,
2012 at the newly renovated
courts of the Manila polo Club
(MpC). a host of MpC squash
players participated in the event:

The Manila polo Club extends condolences to the bereaved family of
Mr. renato paras who passed away on May 6, 2012. Mr. paras was a long time
and very dedicated member of the Club. he served as Club director in 1986
and continued to be a member of various committees several years after.

employees Summer Adventure at eagle Point, Batangas
The Management’s objective of strengthening teamwork
and enjoyment at work is exemplified through the
yearly employee summer Outing participated by regular
employees, their families and guests.
This year, the employees’ summer get-away was held in
eagle point resort located in anilao, batangas. On May 9
and 10, three hundred seven participants (divided in two
batches) gathered at the beautiful resort carefully chosen
by the labor-Management Ocular inspection Team.
The summer escapade set a new experience. upon
arrival, everybody was treated to a welcome drink and
breakfast. This was followed by a teambuilding activity that
tested the athleticism, resourcefulness and determination
of the participants. special prizes were given to the
winning team. after the activity, the group went to sepoc
in line with sports and Games (s&G) Committee’s
directive “to increase the understanding of the
Club rules and policies among the s&G service
providers and implement into real actions”, the
human resources Department conducted focused
orientations for all sports personnel.
The orientation program aims to develop higher levels
of professionalism among fitness trainers, tennis
coaches, trainers, and ballboys who
assist Club members and guests
at all times.

island for some more fun and adventure complemented
with a hearty buffet lunch. The boat ride from the main
beach to sepoc island amidst the beauty of mountains and
sea was a great chance to appreciate nature. participants
truly enjoyed the cool, clear, blue water. afternoon snacks
were served upon return to the main beach resort. a few
minutes in the snorkelling area and eco pool where you
can actually see and be with colourful fishes and baby
sharks capped the memorable summer outing of the
employees and their families, especially the kids.
Thank you to the members of the labor-Management
recreation Team who unselfishly contributed their time
and effort to make the 2012 summer event truly an
adventure!

coming weeks

orientation serves as one of the prerequisites in the
accreditation of service providers.
