All Schools <strong>Victoria</strong>n Whitewater <strong>Canoeing</strong>ngChampionships 2008Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th September 2008General Information & Conditions of <strong>Entry</strong>LocationThe All Schools Championships will be held on the YarraRiver at Warrandyte.• Downriver: Jumping Creek Melways 24A10• Slalom: Warrandyte Bridge: Melways 23F11Date & Start TimesDownriver race:• Saturday 6th September• Briefing: 9.00 a.m.• Start: 9.30 a.m. sharpSlalom race:• Sunday 7th September• Briefing: 8.00 a.m.• Start: 8.30 a.m. sharpProgramDownriver race:• Downriver racing is timed over a fixed length of riverwith several rapids (of a low level of difficulty) to benegotiated.• Canoeists with little expertise can undertake the race(such as those who have undertaken canoeing atschool camps or scout/guide groups).• An average race course is 20 to 30 minutes long.• Held over a 4km course on flowing grade 1-2standard from Jumping Creek to Warrandyte Bridge.Slalom race• Slalom racing requires slightly more expertise as itinvolves a timed run whist negotiation 18-20 gatesover a 250m long course.• The gates are set in both downstream and upstreamdirections and time is added for gate touches andmissed gates.• Held at Warrandyte Bridge on flowing grade 1-2standard.• There will be 2 runs for each competitor (team events1 run).Eligibility• The All Schools Whitewater Championships is opento secondary and primary students who can meet theparticipant requirements noted below.• Kayak teams, girls and boys C2 classes must consistof students from the same school. Only single sexschools may combine to create a mixed C2 or teamentry with one other schoolParticipant RequirementsAll participants must:• be able to capsize and exit a boat effectively in coldwater.• be able to swim 50 metres.• wear suitable personal flotation devices and helmets.• attend the briefing session on the day of competition.• wear suitable footwearCraft Requirements• All slalom boats must comply with ICF rules related todimension, weight, buoyancy, handholds and safety.• Plastic boats and wildwater racing boats must be of asafe standard in relation to buoyancy, handgrips andwater worthiness.• Open or semi decked craft are not permitted in theslalom races.• Craft may be inspected prior to the race to ensure thatthey comply with these requirements.ClassesIndividual Events• Age groups will be divided into one-year incrementsin the kayaking (K1) classes; Age 10 through to 18and above.• Age groups for the single canoe (C1) and doublecanoe (C2) classes will be offered in 17+,16 andunder, 14 and under and 12 and under.• Classes are further divided into boat type, gender andteam categories. Where there are insufficient entriesin a class, paddlers will be placed in the next highestage class. Juniors will not be move upwards intoSenior events.• Age is determined on the last Friday preceding theevent.• Paddlers may enter in two slalom classes and onedown river classTeam Events• A school may enter one senior team (15years andover) and one junior team (14 years and below).• Teams will comprise three boats from any class.• Paddlers may only participate in one team eventSafety• Safety on the competition course will be addressed bythe organisers during the hours of competition.Schools and paddlers must address safety outside ofcompetition times and when using the river or itsenvirons that do not form a part of the course.• Schools participating in Slalom will be expected toprovide staff / parents to assist as officials.

First aid is NOTresponsible for inhaler medication.Practice EventsPrior competitions are held on the Yarra River on aregular basis. These are an ideal venue for practiceprior to the schools competition. Details can be foundon the <strong>Canoeing</strong> <strong>Victoria</strong> website.www.vic.canoe.org.auSlalom Practice at Warrandyte BridgeOn Saturday after completion of downriverpresentations (unless an alternative time is noted in theprogramme), each junior paddler (14 years and below)may have one non stop practice run.Perpetual School Trophies, Medals & CertificatesPoints are awarded to the top 10 competitors in eachclass with both days competition added together.Championship points are awarded to school categoriesbased on the number of paddlers:• small schools category - 10 or less.• medium schools category - 11-30.• large schools category - 30 plus.Medals are awarded in each constituted class,dependent on the number of entries in the class.Trophies for top girl and boy in both senior and juniorage groups are awarded based on performance in theslalom and downriver events.Trophies for the top schools in each size category plusoverall girls and boys teams.Cheques should be made out to:“<strong>Victoria</strong>n Slalom Committee”.Entries close 21 th August 2008Late entries may be accepted by the competitionorganiser.
