The Academy forExcellence in<strong>County</strong> GovernmentTOGETHER, WE LEARNNEW WAYS TO SERVEOUR RESIDENTSThe Academy for Excellencein <strong>County</strong> Government waspleased to announce thegraduation <strong>of</strong> nine Academyparticipants and sevenAdvanced Certification participants inNovember 2010. The graduation andfestivities were held at The Hotel Hersheyduring the CCAP Fall Conference. Alongwith this exemplary feat, this year theAcademy Advisory Board did an extensivereview <strong>of</strong> its curriculum and educationalsessions to enhance the <strong>of</strong>ferings forfuture participants. The new cycle <strong>of</strong> theprogram will <strong>of</strong>ficially kick <strong>of</strong>f in the fall2011 with exciting opportunities for participantsincluding online coursework, liveworkshops and collaborative efforts withthe CCAP Insurance Programs, as well asCCAP affiliate associations.The Advisory Board is an ad hoc committeeappointed by the CCAP president andchaired by Mantura Gallagher, Schuylkill<strong>County</strong>. The main charge <strong>of</strong> the Board isto establish and review the Academy’scurriculum, faculty, administrationand marketing in regard to meeting theeducational needs <strong>of</strong> the greater CCAPmembership. Today, the Academy coreprogram has over 120 graduates and thereare 11 graduates <strong>of</strong> the Advanced Certificationprogram. There are 14 registeredAcademy participants and three AcademyAdvanced Certification participants whoremain enrolled in the program and willbe eligible for graduation at the next ceremonyin 2014.Among the most significant changes thathave been instituted for the 2011-2014Academy cycle is that the program hasopened registration to assistant chiefclerks, assistant county administrators andassistant solicitors. This welcome additionto the Academy family <strong>of</strong>fers an opportunityfor continued personal developmentand certificate training opportunities for10 <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2011 <strong>County</strong> <strong>Commissioners</strong> <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong>
these county leaders as well as a morediverse pool <strong>of</strong> participants for the Academy.This year, efforts focused on making surethat all eligible Academy students wereable to complete the necessary courseworkfor graduation. The Advisory Boardagreed to continue collaborative effortswith the CCAP Insurance Programstraining department and to continue toafford elective credits to those who wishto pursue online training options in theMindLeaders program. Through thesecooperative efforts, participants reap theimmediate benefits <strong>of</strong> convenient classes,different locations and top notch instructorsand a diverse environment. TheAcademy continues to <strong>of</strong>fer stand-aloneworkshops and sponsor breakout sessionsat CCAP conferences that garner creditsfor its participants, too.Board meetings in 2010-11 continued tobe conducted primarily via a conferencecall format that has greatly enhanced theproductivity <strong>of</strong> the Board and the abilityfor all members to participate despite locationor personal schedules. In 2010-11,the Board was pleased to be able to <strong>of</strong>fersix core courses and more than 25 electivecredits at various stand-alone and collaborativeworkshops, and Conference break-“Among the most significantchanges that have beeninstituted for the 2011-2014Academy cycle is that theprogram has opened registrationto assistant chief clerks, assistantcounty administrators andassistant solicitors.”out sessions around the Commonwealth.These workshops are open to all CCAPmembers and county representatives.The Academy has been operating with anon-grant funded budget, relying solely onregistration fees for operating revenue forthe last year and is poised to continue thattrend into the next cycle.
