Abstract of Published Papers 2008Business and EconomicsPertanika Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities (JSSH), Universiti Putra Malaysia(Faculty of Economics and Management), Malaysia, 2008Opinion of Fishermen Towards their Well-being under AgriculturalDiversification and Intensification Program (ADIP) in BangladeshKazi Tarvir Mahmud*, Zinal Abidin Mohammed**, Murali Simvasavan***, SardanaIslam Khan****, Shahnawaz Mohammad Rafi*****AbstractAgricultural Diversification and intensification Project (ADIP) was the collaborative programof the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) and donor agencies. The program was implementedin four districts of Bangladesh in order to upgrade the living-standard of the poor people whowere engaged in agricultural activities. This study took the initiative to assess the borrowers’opinion towards their well-being under ADIP’s fishery program. Primary data was collectedfrom landless and marginal borrowers through a simple random sampling technique from theproject areas who took loan for the first time for fisheries activities. Logit model was used toexamine the influence of socioeconomic variables on the dichotomous dependent variable“Economic well-being”. The borrowers had a positive opinion towards the project forimproving their socioeconomic plight. The study shows that five variables such as familylabor, area of land leased-in by household, distance of NGO branch office and rural marketfrom borrowers’ dwelling place and mobility were significantly related to their well-being.The study also indicates amount of fishery credit did not have any significant influence onborrowers’ well-being.Keywords: ADIP, Microcredit, Borrowers, Well-being.* Department of Economics, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)Bangladesh.
