In a country likeBangladesh, very few get the opportunity to study beyond the shores of their home country,and most of the fortunate few are usually from the upper middle class. By somewhatsurreptitiously opening the doors of employment to the very privileged few, the advertisersare not only being elitist and discriminatory but also contribute to the (re)production of theideology that anything foreign is better than local. The endeavour to strive and go tothe next level may not always be practiced in a healthy manner. The present era poses its ownproblems, issues and challenges; complexities are part and parcel of social existence. In suchan environment taking things at face value could lead one to be beguiled, influenced ormanipulated. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) offers a window of opportunities to makeapparent the not so apparent issues of a society. Its objective is to empower people by makingthem conscious of the hidden structures that exist in the social makeup of a community. Oncean individual or members of a community and / or a society becomes aware of the issues thatmay have escaped them, they will be in a position to choose what to believe and what not tobelieve, what is authentic and what is doubtful or questionable.
