Abstract of Published Papers 2008Liberal Arts and Social SciencesConstructing Identities in the Malaysian Media (ed. by Nair, R., Haque, M.S., Khan, M.H),Kuala Lumpur: University Malaya Press, Malaysia, 2008, (ISBN: 978-983-100-466-1)Discursive Construction of an Identity in Conflict: CDA PerspectiveMuhammed Shahriar Haque*AbstractBangladeshis have often been associated with a nation that suffers from extreme poverty, embroiled in political turmoil, afflicted by floods, cyclones and by tragic accidents; these arethe images that the mass media often portrays of Bangladesh internationally. Besides theseassociations, the media in Malaysia also focuses on the migrant workers and theirinvolvement in some isolated criminal cases and antisocial activities. These activities portraya rather bleak and unwholesome picture of Bangladeshis in Malaysia and go towards creatingan identity which is in conflict with the real identity of most Bangladesh nationals residing inthis multicultural nation; hence, people in general develop a negative image of Bangladeshis. This chapter humbly attempts to show from a critical discourse analysis (CDA) perspectivehow the one sided media portrayal may contribute to the construction of an identity which notonly contradicts but is also in conflict with the real identity of most Bangladeshi nationals—be they students, academics, professionals, businesspersons or workers—residing inMalaysia. It is hoped that awareness of the issue from a CDA stance will help to dispel thestereotypical associations that more often than not may be triggered by the portrayal ofcertain reports in the media.* Department of English, East West University, 43 Mohakhali C/A Dhaka-1212.Email address: shahriar@ewubd.edu32
