evaluation. It was felt that an additional plot measurement would enhance theutility of the earlier data for the purposes of this study.IntroductionThis report is concerned with the study of the trend of changes in speciescomposition on areas abandoned after cultivation in a dry evergreen forest atSakaerat Experiment Station during December '972 and August 1973- Though thereare numerous abandoned areas with shifting agriculture throughout the country, rarely are they kept under observation. This study, therefore, attempted to.visualize the successional stages which have taken place in this forest type.Locale and MethodsA 20 x 20 meter quadrat was laid down in a dry evergreen forest about the endof 1967 to study plant succession. All plants in this quadrat were removed. Thedenuded quadrat lies at an altitude of k5Q meters above sea level.Soils werederived from sandstone and shales with clay loam texture. The drainage conditionwas good. The annual rainfall in this forest is lower than in the true rainforest, averaging about 1000mmper year. The full description of species composition of the original forest was madeby Smitlnand et al (1968) and Sabhasri et al. (1968).The common tree speciesfbund in this forest type were as follows: • Memcylon sp., Hopea ferrea, Hydnocarpus11licofolI us, Wai sura trichostemon, Aglala pi rifera, Canthium brunnescens, Syzg!urncum!nia, Llnociera mlcrostema, Li tsea chinensis, Lagerstroemia calculata, Grewi apanlculata, Dali urn cochni chinensis, Ixora sp., Melodorum furltiosum, Hal lotuspanlculatus, and Phoebe sp. Tree species were small to medium sized. Only 10percent of the trees are greater than 22 cm in diameter. In a one-hectare plotthere occurs about 55 tree species with 1,140 stems of DBH greater than 5 cm andabout 25 species of climbing plants.11-15
