The 3 very nice plates are showing coffee-, tea- and chocolate-plants as well as a person using typical objects of use. Sequel (but complete on its own) of Edwards‘ „Natural history of uncommon birds“, which was published from 1743 until 1751. Parallel text in English and French. Edwards drew and engraved the beautiful illustrations all by himself. All of the plates are brightly coloured; 128 of them represent birds, the remaining plates show other animals, e.g. elephant, rhinoceros, monkeys, zebras and some plants. Plate 242 a restored tear, text pages often show reversed impressions of the illustrations, stamp on title. Very beautiful and decorative copy. 41 (ESPAGNET, Jean d'). Jean d'Espagnet, a French politician and journalist, is known as the author of these two works. "Espagnet has been president of the parliament of Bordeaux and one of the learned men of the seventeenth century and reputed author of the 'Arcanum...opus'. ...The 'Enchiridion' was the first treatise in France which was in opposition to the physics of Aristotle. Comprehensive monograph of the Primates with beautiful stipple engraving plates by Luigi Rados based on drawings of the French painter Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871). The monkeys are divided into 5 classes - Orang-Utans; Baboons (Papio); Guenons (Cercopithecus); Sapajus (Cebus) und Sakis (Callithrix) - and pictured on 70 plates with engraved Italian descriptions. The corresponding descriptions in French and German can be found on the last pages of the volume. The first 3 plates contain anatomical explanations. Behind the illustrated plates follow 18 engraved text plates containing descriptions of species which are even rarer. A 2 nd volume was published in 1814 and is concerned with the lemurs, but only contains 15 plates. Plate 1 with restored tear on margin, a little foxed, old stamp of owner on inside cover. Contemporary leather binding with richly gilt spine and ornamental lines on cover, (slightly worn, corners a little bit bumped, few wormholes on spine). £ 4.900.00 Second edition, but the first one which was printed in Amsterdam, of this significant zoological work. The first edition was published in 1650 by Merian in Frankfurt. Nissen ZBI 2131-2135 und IVB 481; Wellcome III, 366; Anker 235. The plates engraved by Merian can be classified as follows: Mammals (77 of 80), Birds 62, Fish 47, Mussels and Snails 20, Vermins 28 and Snakes 12. Amongst the plates there are also illustrations of mythical creatures, like unicorns, dragons, etc. Plates 7, 8 and 9 of the mammals are missing (supposedly representing elephants). However, our copy is bound together with 5 (of 9) engraved plates by Martinius He(e)mskerck taken from the series "Circulus Vicissitudinis de Rerum humanorum" namely Plates 4-8 (Triumph of Envy, of War, of Poverty, of Humility and of Peace). Plate 4 shows the year 1564. The allegorical plates each show a chariot with different figures, all of the plates in very good and strong printings. 2 text pages are sewed together with the following one, some pages show slight foxing or tanning. Patterns for the richly coloured copper plates were created by Nurembergs engraver and art dealer Georg Wolfgang Knorr and written by Ph. L. Statius Müller.(Thieme-B. XXI, 30-31).
