different texts by f<strong>am</strong>ous oriental travellers as sources. The 3 very nice plates are showing<br />

coffee-, tea- and chocolate-plants as well as a person using typical objects of use. At the<br />

beginning and end a bit waterstained, some stockings, with an attatched and mounted receipt for<br />

chocolate.<br />

First edition. Nissen IVB 288; Anker 126; Zimmer 198-99; Sitwell 93. Sequel (but complete on its<br />

own) of Edwards‘ „Natural history of uncommon birds“, which was published from 1743 until<br />

1751. Parallel text in English and French. Edwards drew and engraved the beautiful illustrations<br />

all by himself. All of the plates are brightly coloured; 128 of them represent birds, the remaining<br />

plates show other animals, e.g. elephant, rhinoceros, monkeys, zebras and some plants. Plate<br />

242 a restored tear, text pages often show reversed impressions of the illustrations, st<strong>am</strong>p on<br />

title. Very beautiful and decorative copy.<br />

d'Espagnet, a French politician and journalist, is known as the author of these two works.<br />

"Espagnet has been president of the parli<strong>am</strong>ent of Bordeaux and one of the learned men of the<br />

seventeenth century and reputed author of the 'Arcanum...opus'. ...The 'Enchiridion' was the first<br />

treatise in France which was in opposition to the physics of Aristotle. It was followed by the<br />

'Arcanum' in which is described the philosopher's stone, its preparation and properties."<br />

show the Northern resp. Southern hemisphere. 1 planisphere chart according to de la Caille and<br />

1 chart showing the most important stars. "Although Goldbach's atlas was not the first showing<br />

white stars against a dark background, it was the first of this kind to catch the eye of the Paris<br />

astronomical establishment. Lalande noted that the method succeeded very well; Montucla
