Edition de luxe of the House of Brandenburg’s history, which was published several times since 1751. Barbier III, 239; Holzmann/Boh, 4260; Cohen- Ricci I, 411; Lanck.- Oehler I, 88 (describes 1st edition of 1751); Preuß I, 55. The genealogical tables show the development of the House of Brandenburg, the beautiful vignettes, engraved by Schmidt (Thieme/Becker XXX, 142) show episodes from the lives of the portrayed sovereigns. Schmidt is like Meil and Chodowiecki one of the primary representatives of the art of copper engraving in 18 th -century Berlin. In part 2 the pagination jumps from 3 to 6. Slightly browned. It was published as first volume of: "Graecia sive historiae urbium et populorum Graeciae ex antiquis numismatibus restitutae libri quator", but following volumes were never published. Very rare work describing ancient history of the South of Italy and Sicily by the Dutch copper engraver and numismatist Hubertus Goltzius (1526-1583). Maps showing the Southern part of Italy and Sicily, plates with designs of coins. The portrait in part two by Melchior Lor(i)ch. One of only 50 numbered copies that were published as subscription edition. Signed by the artist on the imprint page. The book contains the exchange rates of the most important European stock exchanges (Amsterdam, Lyon London, Hamburg, Venedig, Neapel, Rom, Madrid, etc.) as well as an essay about the most famous fairs of that time (Leipzig, Frankfurt, Naumburg, Lyon, etc.).The beautiful allegorical frontispiece shows Europa and Mercury, God of Trade, and a harbour scene in the background; engraved by Blank after Decker. Contemporary red, straight grained morocco, richly gilt and blind stamped, gilt edging (restored hinges, corners and edges slightly rubbed). £ 2.000.00 New edition of this work which is rarely to be found complete. Schwerdt IV 48; cf. Tooley 272. “Interesting series of sporting etchings covering the whole range of British field sports. The best of these are again in the active hunting, coursing, shooting, hawking, fishing and racing scenes.” (Schwerdt) With the demanded representations of fox hunting, stag hunting and fowling, about angling resp. fishing, horse racing etc. Margins slightly browned and minimal foxing.
