XXVI, 104. Extensively illustrated work on historical buildings in Rome. Overbeke (around 1660-<br />

1706), stayed between 1680 and 1700 several times in Rome and spent the years till his death<br />

engraving his drawings of Rome, which were published by his cousin in 1708. Plates provide<br />

views of churches, ruines, gates, bridges, etc. Engraved frontispice and dedication are lacking.<br />

Margins slightly soilde, some foxing, vol. 1 slightly waterstained at margins, beginning at lower<br />

right corner a bit stronger. Copy with wide margins.<br />

First edition, rare. - ADB 25, 198ff. Contains descriptions of London’s most f<strong>am</strong>ous sights (British<br />

Museum, National Gallery, H<strong>am</strong>pton Court, Windsor, Buckingh<strong>am</strong> House, etc.) as well as of<br />

private painting collections; descriptions of Salisbury, Oxford and Liverpool, etc. Moreover, the<br />

volume contains a “Directory of Art Collections in England’s Country Houses“ ("Verzeichnis der<br />

Kunsts<strong>am</strong>mlungen in den Landsitzen Englands"), gives a detailed survey of the Fine Arts in<br />

England and talks about the art scene in Belgium and the Lower Rhine ("Kunstnachrichten aus<br />

Belgien und vom Niederrhein"). On pp. 182-184 an early account of a railway journey from<br />

Liverpool to Manchester even before the opening of the first railway line in Germany. The<br />

Frankfurt citizen Passavant (1787-1861) is regarded as one of the founders of the modern<br />

science of art and museum. During his time as director, the “Städel“ museum in Frankfurt<br />

acquired lots of important works. The monogr<strong>am</strong> on the front cover is of Mary of Saxony-<br />

Altenburg who was the last Queen of Hanover. After the coronation of her husband Georg V. of<br />

Hanover she used the initials MR (Maria Regina) with a crown hovering above them. A little<br />

foxed, small n<strong>am</strong>e st<strong>am</strong>p on inside cover.<br />

Published as volume V of the complete works of G.B. Piranesis. Kat. Orn<strong>am</strong>entstichslg. Berlin<br />

1878; vgl. Hind S. 89. This Paris-edition was published without text. Series of 6 plates, showing<br />

the grave of the Scipiones in Rome, which was discovered by the archaeologist Ennio Quirino in<br />

1780. Francesco Piranesi, son of f<strong>am</strong>ous Giovanni Battista Piranesi, worked primarily together<br />

with his father and published his works posthumously. Drawings by G.B.Piranesi are presumably<br />

the origin of these plates. -Very nice French binding with bookplate of "...Tessier, relieur et<br />

doreur de la Trésorerie nationale..." Some minor stockings.<br />

First edition, complete rare. Palau 227450; Henze IV, 125 ff. Main work of the cartographer and<br />

geologist Pedro Amado Pissis Marin (1812-1889). It combines the findings of his travels through<br />

all parts of Chile in 1848 and 1868. "Nebst Phillipi hat Pissis gewiß den größten Anteil an der<br />

wissenschaftlichen Erschließung Chiles in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts." (Henze).<br />

With a map of South America, profiles of altitude, a coloured plate of the massif of the<br />

Aconcagua, more illustrations of Andenous mountains, the spring of river Lontue, the volcano<br />

Chillan, and a coloured plate of the volcanic crater of Antuco, lava of the Osorno, an illustration<br />

of a glacier, etc. The text explains in detail the orography, geology, meteorology, hydrography<br />

and botanical geography of Chile. Textvolume waterstained at margins, n<strong>am</strong>e on title, atlas with<br />

st<strong>am</strong>p on title, some minor foxing.<br />
