are by Hans Baldung Grien and Wolf Taut. Leaf XVI is a copy of the full-page sized woodcut on
original paper. Some pages washed. Some prints show slight foxing, parts are slightly
waterstained, name and ownership entry on title. Fine copy with strong woodcut imprints in a
decorative binding presumably from the Nuremberg area.
77 SCALIGER - SCHIOPPIUS, Gaspar (Caspar Schoppe). Scaliger Hpobolimaeus Hoc est:
elenchus epistolae Iosephi Burdonis Pseudoscaligeri de vetustate & splendore gentis
Scaligerae. Mainz, Joh. Albin, 1607. 4to. 10 unn. ll., 429 (recte 430) ll., with 2 armorial wood
First edition, rare. VD 17, 23:235409H; Dünnhaupt 27; Graesse VI, 325; ADB 33, 479ff. Caspar
Schoppe (1576-1649) is regarded as one of the most significant philologist and publicist of his
days. In this work, which was considered to be a vituperative attack on a text of Scaliger,
Schoppe challenges in a very ironic way Scaligers supposedly noble ancestry from the Veronese
House of ‘della Scala’. Loosened, stamp on title, parts are very browned, edges partly waterstained,
last pages show small wormholes. Copy out of the collection Carlo Booi (Bibliot.
Bossiane Alexandrinae).
79 SLEVOGT - GOETHE, (Johann Wolfgang). Faust. Zweiter Teil. Berlin, Bruno Cassirer, 1927.
Large-Folio. 1 white, 1 unn. l., 460 pp., 2 unn. ll., with 510 (447) original lithographs, 10 full-page
original etchings and 1 etched title vignette by Max Slevogt. Original cloth with gilt stamped
First edition that contains these illustrations. One of 250 numbered copies; imprint signed by
artist. Rümann 25a; Lang 227; Slg. Kippenberg 7986. The lithographs were printed by W. M.
Lassally, the etchings by C. Sabo and the text pages by J. Hegner, Hellerau. This book is the
most important work of the famous German painter and illustrator Max Slevogt, because of its
brilliant and outstanding symbiosis of illustration and text. On some pages the lithographs are
larger than the type area. Pages 254-263 show some minor foxing on the lower margin. Edges
slightly foxed, but nevertheless a very fine copy.
