Berlin 4696. F<strong>am</strong>ous textbook on perspective with lots of ex<strong>am</strong>ples of use. Lencker is a<br />
descendant of one of the most distinguished goldsmith f<strong>am</strong>ilies in Renaissance Nuremberg. He<br />
invented optical instruments and fabricated geometric and perspective models. By his own<br />
account he also processed ideas of Albrecht Dürer. The publication of this work was the reason<br />
for his employment as a teacher for perspective at the court of Christian I. in Dresden. Nowadays<br />
Hans Lencker is reckoned as one of the three 16 th century Nuremberg constructivists, along with<br />
Wenzel J<strong>am</strong>nitzer and Lorenz Stöer. Minor stocking, slightly water-stained margins on few<br />
pages, fine copy.<br />

edtion was 1776-1792 published as: "Various Subjects of Natural History, wherein are delineated<br />
Birds, Animals and many curious Plants..." and is on the wantlist by the British Museum. Nissen<br />

Most of the plates have watermarks by the f<strong>am</strong>ous manufactures of J.Whatman or J.Taylor. The<br />
text by George Shaw was first published in the second editon. Plates in fine contemporary handcolouring,<br />
showing many newly discovered plants and animals, but mostly birds (<strong>am</strong>ong parrots<br />
