1) First edition. VD 17 3: 604173M; BL A959; Fumagalli 105. Extremely rare compilation of<br />

different travelogues, <strong>am</strong>ong them an account of the journey of Giacomo Baretti (1655), a report<br />

on oriental gemstones and perls in Asia, and starting on page 577 "Von gegenwärtiger<br />

Beschaffenheit deß Judenthums. Absonderlich in Africa und der sogenannten Barbarey." The<br />

title, engraved by J.N. Schurtz, represents the Great Mogul who is surrounded by 4 men.<br />

2) First German edition, one of 2 existing print variations. Palau 163.211; Cordier BI 112 und BJ<br />

38; Fumagalli 103; Graesse V, 301; Weller Druckorte I, 33. F<strong>am</strong>ous travel report of the<br />

Portuguese Mendez Pinto, which contains one of the first accounts of Japan. The first<br />

Portuguese edition was already published in 1614. Pinto left for India on 11th March 1537 which<br />

was the beginning of a 21-year-long journey through Asia. By his own account he visited<br />

numerous East Asian countries (e.g. China, Thailand) and he was one of the first Europeans to<br />

travel in Japan.<br />

3) First German edition, very rare. - Sabin 38972; vgl. Jenkins 135 (Dutch edition). On behalf of<br />

the Earl of Condé the author went to Scandinavia where he contacted the Danish scientist Ole<br />

Worm and the Swedish Queen Christina. Their exchange of information and ideas resulted in the<br />

emergence of this work on Greenland. He describes the history, geographical position and<br />

discovery, inhabitants, flora and fauna as well as different Greenland expeditions. The plates<br />

show a Greenland f<strong>am</strong>ily in fur clothes, a narwhale and fishermen in a kayak.<br />

4) Third edition. Kainbacher I, 166; vgl. Gay 269; Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 66. Description of the author’s<br />

both Orient journeys from 1630-31 and 1634-36. On his first journey he travelled via Padua,<br />

Venice, Cattaro and Smyrna to Constantinople where he stayed for one year. The second<br />

journey took him to Cairo, to the Pyr<strong>am</strong>ids, to Mount Sinai (which he describes in detail) and<br />

further via Beirut, Sidon and S<strong>am</strong>aria to Jerusalem. At the s<strong>am</strong>e time illustrated editions were<br />

published in Nuremberg; our copy without plates.<br />

Fine collection of 4 important and partly extremely rare geographical works in very good<br />

condition.<br />

First edition. Phillips-Le Gear 8526; Tiele 102; Nebehay-W. 94. One of the most important<br />

illustrated works with views of nearly all important cities in Germany and its surrounding<br />

countries. The plates represent views of Aachen, Augsburg, Basel, Bern, Bonn, Bremen, Danzig,<br />

Dresden, Erfurt, Frankfurt/M., H<strong>am</strong>burg, Heidelberg, Innsbruck, Cologne, Copenhagen, Lübeck,<br />

Marburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Prague, Speyer, Strassburg, Trier, Vienna, etc. The view of Trier<br />

is mounted. Very light foxing, the last pages are a little waterstained, overpasted handwriting on<br />

upper margin of title (covering small part of title engraving). St<strong>am</strong>p on title and coat of arms.<br />
