process<strong>in</strong>g when the space-<strong>time</strong> covariance matrix is estimated from a dataset withlimited support. The utility of reduced-rank <strong>methods</strong> is demonstrated by theoreticalanalysis, simulations and analysis of real data. It is shown that reduced-rankprocess<strong>in</strong>g has two effects on the performance: <strong>in</strong>creased statistical stability whichtends to improve performance, and <strong>in</strong>troduction of a bias which lowers the signalto-noiseratio. A method for evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the theoretical conditioned SNR for fixedreduced-rank transforms is also presented.
