The mission <strong>of</strong> PRN is toprotect the health and safety <strong>of</strong> the citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> through early identification, referral for evaluation/appropriatetreatment, and accurate monitoring techniques <strong>of</strong> impaired healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. PRN’s services are available toall licensed practitioners, those in the process <strong>of</strong> applying for a license, temporary license holders, residents, medicalstudents and requests from other state Physician Health Programs.By enrolling at FAU COM, students consent to referral to PRN if deemed appropriate by FAU COM authorities.For more information about PRN, please visit their website (http://www.flprn.org/about.html) and the PRN Fact Sheet(http://www.flprn.org/Fact_Sheet.pdf).Academic CounselingThe Academic Societies and Learning CommunitiesThe Academic Societies are the main mechanism through which student advising and mentoring occurs. There aretwo Academic Societies at the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>, each led by a Society Dean (SD) from the Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>Student</strong>Affairs – Dr. Stuart Markowitz, Senior Associate Dean for <strong>Student</strong> Affairs, and Dr. Julie C. Servoss, Associate Deanfor Diversity, Cultural and <strong>Student</strong> Affairs. Each entering class is divided randomly and evenly among the twosocieties which are physically located in the Biomedical Science Building. Each Academic Society is further dividedinto two Learning Communities led by Learning Community Advisors (LCAs). The structure <strong>of</strong> the AcademicSocieties and Learning Communities results in each medical student having two dedicated faculty guides throughouttheir education, both <strong>of</strong> whom develop a deep understanding <strong>of</strong> the student’s strengths, challenges and career goals.These faculty guides focus on the intellectual and pr<strong>of</strong>essional growth and development <strong>of</strong> the student over time.The Societies will also provide a peer mentoring program for first year students, starting with the 2012 entering class.Roles and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the Society Dean (SD): The primary roles <strong>of</strong> the SD’s are to: (1) assist the studentsin career planning and development utilizing the AAMC Careers in <strong>Medicine</strong> program, (2) serve as a resource withregards to all <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> policies and procedures, and (3) serve as a resource to the Learning CommunityAdvisors.Responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the SD include:Serve as a resource with regard to the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> curriculum including purpose, sequence andassessment methodsServe as a resource with regard to the policies and procedures <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> and FAU(including the MSPPSC)Act as a resource for the student during student interactions with the MSPPSC or FAU Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>Student</strong>Affairs regarding promotion and/or disciplinary actions or sanctionsServe as a resource with regard to student’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional enrichment opportunities, i.e. summer researchopportunities; year-long research fellowships (i.e., Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship, NIH ResearchScholars Program, NIH Clinical Research Training Program, Sarn<strong>of</strong>f Research Fellowship, etc.);international and other service learning opportunities8
