Academic AffairsAcademic CalendarUniversity HolidaysFlorida Atlantic University is closed on a number of national holidays, including Labor Day, Veteran’s Day,Thanksgiving Day and the following Friday, a winter holiday on varying days during the period that includesChristmas Day and New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. The datesof the University Holidays for each year can be found at http://www.fau.edu/hr/EmpDevelopment/Holidays.php.The College of Medicine will be closed and will not hold classes on University Holidays; however, during clerkshipsstudents may be expected to take call on these days depending on the patient care activities at their assigned clinicalsites.Note that the academic calendar for the College of Medicine differs from that for the rest of the University. Students learn enduring lessons of professionalism by observing andemulating role models who epitomize authentic professional values and attitudes.RESPECT Fundamental to the ethic of medicine is respect for every individual. Mutual respectbetween learners, as novice members of the medical profession, and their teachers, asexperienced and esteemed professionals, is essential for nurturing that ethic. Given the inherentlyhierarchical nature of the teacher/learner relationship, teachers have a special obligation toensure that students and residents are always treated respectfully.15
