PreambleThe <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>Atlantic</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> has an obligation to evaluate students pursuing the M.D. degreeas thoroughly as possible for their cognitive and noncognitive abilities, their academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional knowledgeand skills, their integrity, and their suitability for the practice <strong>of</strong> medicine.This Policy on Academic, Pr<strong>of</strong>essional and Behavioral Requirements and Standards is limited to students pursuingthe M.D. degree at <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>Atlantic</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Where applicable, <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>Atlantic</strong> <strong>University</strong> Regulations 4.001 (Code<strong>of</strong> Academic Integrity), 4.002 (<strong>Student</strong> Academic Grievance Procedures for Grade Reviews) and 4.007 (<strong>Student</strong>Code <strong>of</strong> Conduct) are incorporated by reference and shall apply to students in the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>. Definitionsand examples <strong>of</strong> conduct and behavior relating to and/or affecting the pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice <strong>of</strong> medicine may be foundin some or all <strong>of</strong> the following documents: this policy, the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> website, <strong>University</strong> and <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Medicine</strong> regulations and policies, admission materials, the student handbook, course syllabi, course materials, andlectures. This policy addresses conduct and performance that is academic or pr<strong>of</strong>essional in nature, as well asconduct that is subject to <strong>University</strong> Regulation 4.007.All references in this policy to the Dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>, the Vice Dean for Medical Education and <strong>Student</strong>Affairs, Senior Associate Dean for <strong>Student</strong> Affairs (referred to throughout as the “SADSA”), the Senior AssociateDean for Medical Education and Faculty Development, and the Associate Dean for Diversity, Cultural and <strong>Student</strong>Affairs shall refer to those individuals within the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> and shall be deemed to include their designees.Section I: Oath <strong>of</strong> Academic and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Conduct for <strong>Student</strong>s in the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Medicine</strong>The practice <strong>of</strong> the art and science <strong>of</strong> medicine must be based on reverence for life, compassion and respect for thepatient, competence, and integrity. Hence, the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> expects its students to exhibit compassion; to beconsiderate and respectful towards patients, their families, instructors, staff, and each other; to grow in knowledgeand clinical skill; and to act honorably at all times.Each matriculating class <strong>of</strong> students in the <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>Atlantic</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> shall recite their Class Oathat the White Coat Ceremony during Orientation, before they begin their first courses <strong>of</strong> study for the M.D. degree.This Oath will be written by the students themselves, based on small group exercises and discussions <strong>of</strong> appropriateacademic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct for students <strong>of</strong> medicine. The exercise and discussions will be facilitated by<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> faculty. The Oath for each class will be posted in classrooms, used in reflective exercises invarious courses, and serve as a guide for student behavior throughout their studies in the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>. Bywriting and reciting their own Oath, students will pledge to adhere to the tenets <strong>of</strong> their Oath throughout medicalschool, in all settings that reflect upon the integrity and suitability <strong>of</strong> the student to practice medicine. Successfulprogression through the curriculum and graduation with the M.D. degree are contingent upon the student's adherenceto the Oath <strong>of</strong> his/her class and to the AMA Principles <strong>of</strong> Conduct for medical students.Section II: The Medical <strong>Student</strong> Promotions and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Standards Committee(MSPPSC)The Medical <strong>Student</strong> Promotions and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Standards Committee (referred to as the “MSPPSC”) is a standingfaculty committee composed <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> course directors and faculty from the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>, as described inthe <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> bylaws. The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Faculty Development, theSenior Associate Dean for <strong>Student</strong> Affairs, the Associate Dean for Diversity, Cultural and <strong>Student</strong> Affairs and other<strong>of</strong>ficials from the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> may serve on the MSPPSC as non-voting ex <strong>of</strong>ficio members. Any members <strong>of</strong>the MSPPSC who have had direct involvement in a matter under review by the MSPPSC shall recuse him/herselffrom such participating in such review. The MSPPSC is charged with the responsibility <strong>of</strong> making decisions in regardsto the standards and procedures relating to student evaluation, advancement, graduation, and disciplinary actionincluding dismissal. Academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional performance will be evaluated by a variety <strong>of</strong> methods approved byfaculty committees governing the curriculum, described in each course or clerkship syllabus, and will include not onlyformal examinations but also assessments based on observation <strong>of</strong> student performance in lectures, examinations,laboratories, recitation sessions, and all other clinical and academic settings <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> or clerkships.47
