ThompsonWinsAdviserAwardRalph J. Thompson (Eastern Kentucky'69) is the 1986-87 recipientof the Samuel V. Stone ChapterAdviser of the Year Award. He isthe adviser at Eastern Kentucky.ROBERT A. BIGGSGeorgia Southern '76Director of Chapter ServicesIhe 1986-87 recipient of theSamuel V. Stone Chapter Adviserof the Year Award is Brother RalphJ. Thompson (Eastern Kentucky'69) from Eastern KentuckyUniversity.Brother Thompson was thefaculty adviser of Alpha Chi Iota(local fraternity) and became analumnus of Phi Delta Theta afterthe installation of Alpha Chi Iota in1969 when a charter was granted.Ralph has served as chapter adviserfor 18 years and has alsoserved as a house corporationmember. He has been recognized inthe past by Phi Delta Theta andbeen named a runiier-up to theSamuel V. Stone Adviser Award.He has also been recognized by theEKU Greek community, beennamed Outstanding FraternityChapter Adviser, and honored asthe Outstanding Teacher in the Collegeof Mathematical and BehaviorScience."Doc," as he is called by chaptermembers, has maintained an activerole in the promotion of good scholarshipfor Kentucky Theta. He hashad excellent results since the chapterhas had the highest grade pointaverage on campus of all fraternitiesfor 30 of 36 semesters since thechapter's inception in 1969. He isin attendance at all chapter meetingsand regularly helps the officersin their responsibilities. He is akeynote speaker for rush events andis one of the chapter's main rushersand attends all functions. He alsomaintains close contact with alumniand holds several functions in hishome for the alumni and undergraduates.Brother Thompson has also beenvery active within the Greek community.He attends most, if not all,of the Greek Week events, otherGreek activities, and all intramuralgames, and works with the universityadministrators.Ralph is a member of the FirstPresbyterian Church of Richmond,the American Chemical Society,and Sigma XI (a scientific societydedicated to the prcmotion ofscience research). He has attendedPhi Delta Theta Conventions andchapter adviser workshops in thepast. It has been said that Doc isthe backbone of the chapter and theinstigator of many academic andspiritual events throi^hout the year.The charter president of KentuckyTheta, Steven W. Okeson,has said of Doc, "He has been anongoing asset to our Fraternity. Aspresident of the local fraternity,then turning into a Phi Delta colonyand consequently the firstchapter president of KentuckyTheta, I knew Dr. Thompson verywell and worked with him continuallythroughout our inception. Hewas a man who did not ask for howmuch there was to accomplish buttook charge and made sure allthings got done. He surely allowedno obstacles to obscure our goalsfrom this great InternationalFraternity."A recent past president. RickMuterspaw, has said of Ralph, "Forthe past 18 years the chapter of PhiDelta Theta at Eastern KentuckyUniversity has been steadilyuplifted and guided by the helpinghand of Dr. Ralph J. Thompson.Always exemplifying the threeprinciples upon which Phi DeltaTheta was founded, he participatesin attending nearly every meeting,rush function, and major event."Being recognized as the OutstandingChapter Adviser of theYear for 1986-87 entitles BrotherThompson and his wife, Elizabeth,to be the guests of the General Fraternityat the next convention inDallas, Texas. There are many distinguishedalumni in Phi DeltaTheta who also deserve special recognitionand appreciation becauseof their involvement as chapteradviser. In addition to recognizingone alumnus as Adviser of theYear, other outstanding advisers arenamed as runners-up to this award.Special commendation goes tothe following excellent advisers:John Score - Texas Gamma -Southwestern University - fouryears, Roger Heineken - KansasEpsilon - Emporia State University- 5 years, and Booth Malone -Alabama Beta - Auburn University- 2 years.
