34 Education <strong>and</strong> Training Chapter 4the Reserve Educational Assistance Program, <strong>and</strong> qualifies <strong>for</strong> thePost-9/11 GI Bill, an irrevocable election must be made to receivebenefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. In most instances, once theelection to receive benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill is made, theindividual will no longer be eligible to receive benefits under the relinquishedprogram.Based on the length of active duty service, eligible participants areentitled to receive a percentage of the following:1. Cost of tuition <strong>and</strong> fees, not to exceed the most expensivein-state undergraduate tuition at a public institution of highereducation (paid directly to the school);2. Monthly housing allowance equal to the basic allowance <strong>for</strong>housing payable to a military E-5 with dependents, in thesame zip code as the primary school (paid directly to theservicemember or veteran);3. Yearly books <strong>and</strong> supplies stipend of up to $1000 per year(paid directly to the servicemember or veteran); <strong>and</strong>4. A one-time payment of $500 paid to certain individualsrelocating from highly rural areas.* The housing allowance <strong>and</strong> books <strong>and</strong> supplies stipend are not payableto individuals on active duty. The housing allowance is not payable tothose pursuing training at half time or less or to individuals enrolled solely indistance learning programs.<strong>Benefits</strong> may be used <strong>for</strong> any approved program offered by a schoolin the United States that is authorized to grant an associate (orhigher) degree.
