86 <strong>Benefits</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Dependents</strong> <strong>and</strong> Survivors Chapter 11must have been under conditions other than dishonorable.DIC Payment Rates <strong>for</strong> Surviving Spouses*AllowancesMonthly RateBasic Payment Rate $1,154Additional Allowances:Each Dependent Child $286Aid <strong>and</strong> Attendance $286Housebound $135*<strong>Veterans</strong> who died on or after Jan. 1, 1993.Special Allowances: Add $233 if the veteran was totally disabledeight continuous years prior to death.Add $250 to the additional allowance <strong>for</strong> dependent children <strong>for</strong> theinitial two years of entitlement <strong>for</strong> DIC awards commencing on orafter Jan. 1, 2005.Payments <strong>for</strong> Deaths Prior to Jan. 1, 1993: Surviving spouses ofveterans who died prior to Jan. 1, 1993, receive an amount based onthe deceased’s military pay grade.Parents’ DIC: VA provides an income-based monthly benefit to thesurviving parent(s) of a servicemember or veteran whose death wasservice-related. When countable income exceeds the limit set bylaw, no benefits are payable. The spouse’s income must also beincluded if living with a spouse. A spouse may be the other parent ofthe deceased veteran, or a spouse from remarriage. Unreimbursedmedical expenses may be used to reduce countable income. Benefitrates <strong>and</strong> income limits change annually.Payments <strong>for</strong> Deaths After Jan. 1, 1993: Surviving spouses ofveterans who died on or after Jan. 1, 1993, receive a basic rate,plus additional payments <strong>for</strong> dependent children, <strong>for</strong> the aid <strong>and</strong>attendance of another person if they are patients in a nursing homeor require the regular assistance of another person, or if they arepermanently housebound.DIC Rates <strong>for</strong> Surviving Spouses*
