Chapter 6 VA Life Insurance 55Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Family CoverageServicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Family Coverage (FSGLI)provides up to $100,000 of life insurance coverage <strong>for</strong> spouses ofservicemembers covered full time by SGLI, not to exceed the amountof SGLI the member has in <strong>for</strong>ce. FSGLI is a servicemembers’ benefit,<strong>and</strong> the member pays the premium <strong>and</strong> is the beneficiary of thepolicy. FSGLI spousal coverage ends when: 1) the servicememberelects in writing to terminate coverage on the spouse; 2) the servicememberelects to terminate his or her own SGLI coverage; 3) theservicemember dies; 4) the servicemember separates from service;or 5) the servicemember divorces the spouse. The insured spousemay convert his or her FSGLI coverage to a policy offered by participatingprivate insurers within 120 days of the date of any of thosetermination events.<strong>Veterans</strong>’ Group Life InsuranceSGLI may be converted to <strong>Veterans</strong>’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI),which provides renewable term coverage to:1. <strong>Veterans</strong> who had full-time SGLI coverage upon release fromactive duty or the reserves.2. Ready Reservists with part-time SGLI coverage who incur adisability or aggravate a pre-existing disability during areserve period that renders them uninsurable at st<strong>and</strong>ardpremium rates.3. Members of the Individual Ready Reserve <strong>and</strong> InactiveNational Guard.SGLI can be converted to VGLI up to the amount of coverage theservice member had when separated from service. <strong>Veterans</strong> whosubmit an application <strong>and</strong> the initial premium within 120 days of leavingthe service will be covered regardless of their health. <strong>Veterans</strong>who don’t apply within this period can still convert to VGLI if theysubmit an application, pay the initial premium, <strong>and</strong> show evidence ofinsurability within one year after the end of the 120 day period.SGLI Disability ExtensionService members who are totally disabled at the time of separationare eligible <strong>for</strong> free SGLI Disability Extension of up to two years.Those covered under the SGLI Disability Extension are automaticallyconverted to VGLI at the end of their extension period. VGLI is convertibleat any time to a permanent plan policy with any participating
