In 1985, Dr Kwizera was <strong>of</strong>fered a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship in Clinical<br />

Pharmacology and Toxicology, <strong>at</strong> the Robbens Institute <strong>of</strong> Industrial and Environmental Health<br />

and Safety, <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Surrey in Guildford, UK. There, <strong>at</strong>tached to the Nephrotoxicity<br />

Unit, he researched and published on drug and chemical-induced kidney damage. And while<br />

in Guildford, Dr Kwizera was appointed Associ<strong>at</strong>e Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pharmacology <strong>at</strong> the then<br />

UNITRA, a position he took up in December 1988. After a frustr<strong>at</strong>ingly long mor<strong>at</strong>orium<br />

on promotions <strong>at</strong> the institution, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kwizera was promoted to Full Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, effective<br />

January 2004. He has also been HOD, Pharmacology, since 2004.<br />

At <strong>WSU</strong>, not only has Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kwizera taught, researched and published in Clinical<br />

Pharmacology, but he has also served on Eastern Cape Provincial Drug and Therapeutics<br />

Committee, as well as on the N<strong>at</strong>ional Essential Drugs Committee. He has also put in Sessional<br />

clinical work <strong>at</strong> Mth<strong>at</strong>ha General Hospital in Family Medicine (1989 – 2002) and in Forensic<br />

Medicine (2003 – to d<strong>at</strong>e), contributing to the clinical care <strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>ients in these facilities.<br />

Over the past 20 <strong>years</strong>, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kwizera has developed deep interest in Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>ion which has become his second academic passion. In 1993, he was elected to the<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> the South African Associ<strong>at</strong>ion for Medical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion (SAAME) to represent<br />

UNITRA and the Border Region. SAAME has since morphed to SAAHE (South African<br />

Associ<strong>at</strong>ion for Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Educ<strong>at</strong>ionalists), and he represents the Eastern Cape on<br />

the SAAHE Council. More recently, Kwizera was, in 2007, awarded a Fellowship <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Found<strong>at</strong>ion for the Advancement <strong>of</strong> Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Medical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion and Research (FAIMER)<br />

based in Philadelphia, USA, which he completed with distinction in 2008. As an <strong>of</strong>fshoot to<br />

his FAIMER Fellowship, he is currently on the Council and is Faculty <strong>at</strong> SAFRI (Southern<br />

African FAIMER Regional Institute) which aims <strong>at</strong> propag<strong>at</strong>ing FAIMER activities in sub-<br />

Saharan Africa.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kwizera has widely published locally and intern<strong>at</strong>ionally on pharmacology,<br />

toxicology, and on health pr<strong>of</strong>essions educ<strong>at</strong>ion; and he has <strong>at</strong>tended and presented papers <strong>at</strong><br />

numerous local and intern<strong>at</strong>ional conferences. The last two <strong>of</strong> the l<strong>at</strong>ter were in Malaga, Spain<br />

and Khartoum, Sudan in August and October 2009, respectively, and the next one is next month<br />

in Miami, USA, where he will make a present<strong>at</strong>ion on a novel way <strong>of</strong> evalu<strong>at</strong>ing the learning<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pharmacology <strong>at</strong> <strong>WSU</strong>. He is Associ<strong>at</strong>e Editor <strong>of</strong> two intern<strong>at</strong>ional peer-reviewed online<br />

journals: BioMed Central Clinical Pharmacology, and BioMed Central Medical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

and he is on the Editorial Board <strong>of</strong> the African Journal <strong>of</strong> Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Educ<strong>at</strong>ion. He is<br />

also a reviewer for Medical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, and for the European Journal <strong>of</strong> Radiography.<br />

In his illustrious academic career as a Pharmacologist, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kwizera has directly<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the <strong>training</strong> <strong>of</strong> more than 2600 <strong>doctors</strong> (in both Uganda and South Africa) and<br />

more than 500 biomedical scientists in the UK. In addition, he has been involved in the external<br />

moder<strong>at</strong>ion and/or examin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a further 300 <strong>doctors</strong> and 150 pharmacists in Tanzania, as<br />

well as 200 Pharmacists and 300 dentists in South Africa.<br />
