This year will surely present you withopportunities to realise your dreams as tocontribute in the societal development whichyou so much cherish. This message isconversed on behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Orientation</strong>Committee that compiled this <strong>Booklet</strong> whichwill help you prepare to begin your studies atUL.The <strong>Booklet</strong> focuses on both your academicand social lives at the <strong>University</strong> and further.The presentations to be made by the various<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials during your <strong>Orientation</strong>Programmes shall help to manage thetransition from high school situation <strong>of</strong> beinga learner to that <strong>of</strong> a student.The ultimate goal <strong>of</strong> every registered studentis to complete his/her degree in order toqualify as a graduate. Therefore; yourmaximum attention to the orientationactivities especially and primarily theacademic programmes becomes pivotal andessential. This <strong>Booklet</strong> will guide you to have aclear understanding and guidance on howsuch academic programmes are structuredwithin various Faculties and Schools.Being a first entering student can beextremely challenging especially on yoursocial life. There are academic support unitse.g Centre for Student Counselling andDevelopment that will assist you to managethose areas especially where you fail to copewith your academic challenges. You are urgedto pay your maximum attention to theirpresentations that are covered during the<strong>Orientation</strong> Programme.You will also receive a presentation from theLibrary Unit, extremely essential as part <strong>of</strong>your academic support unit. Besides the usualmass presentations in the hall, you will beexpected to be at the Library <strong>Orientation</strong>sessions to have a clearer understanding <strong>of</strong>how to use these essential facilities for yourabsolute and qualitative academicachievements. Together with the InformationCommunication Technology (ICT) Division, theLibrary shall run a joint programme for you tovisit the Computer Laboratories so that youcan understand how to use the Internet/Website as a point <strong>of</strong> reference in yourstudies.Not all students are coming from financiallyadvantaged backgrounds hence it is essentialthat you pay attention to presentation fromthe Bursary Section also known as theFinancial Aid Office. Obviously you must haveheard about National Student Financial AidScheme (NSFAS) and many other bursariesand loans which will assist to ease yourfinancial obligations and challenges at the<strong>University</strong>. The secret to access their financialsupport is.... Academic Performance!!!Your student life, accommodation, safety andsecurity at the <strong>University</strong> is our seriousconcern; hence we designed the programmein such a manner that representatives <strong>of</strong> theabove Units address you. Their messages havealways been helpful as 50% <strong>of</strong> your life at the<strong>University</strong> keeps them extreme functional.Student Accommodation as your living unit isby extension your further academic supportarea. Remember the <strong>University</strong> installedinternet connectivity in most <strong>of</strong> theresidences to make life easy for those who arefortunate to have personal computers. Forthose students with or without computers,please go to the ICT section <strong>of</strong> this booklet forfurther information.Remember that we have physically challengedstudents at our <strong>University</strong>.
